Naturals: HOW DO YOU LIMIT YOUR HAIR MANIPULATION???

I'm currently wearing a sew-in..which I figured would be okay since I wore them a lot when I was relaxed. However, now that I'm natural..for some reason my hair is itching. Mind you..i've only been wearing it for a week. Anyway..the only reason I put it in was to limit the manipulation I put on my hair. I was combing it everyday..and co washing every other day. So ladies..what how do you control the manipulation of your hair? I was thinking of doing braid outs..what do you think?

Maybe you need to clean your scalp a bit better. You may have some residue on your scalp. What are you 'greasing' or moisturizing your natural hair under the weave with?

For me, I put my hair up for 1-2 weeks before I take it all down and do it all over again. For the past few months I was putting them in small/med box braids (my hair), but recently, I'd been flat twisting them. I hope to have perfected my flat twists come next spring!

I like to do braidouts, but i dont consider that low-manipulation at all. If you want to preserve that style, you end up re-braiding the hair every night almost. When I low-manip I do something that will keep me from combing/brushing my hair for 1-2 weeks.

Some itching is normal during the first week when you wear a weave. If you wash it - the itching will stop. If you have extra itch then try a shampoo with mint in it. I limit manipulation ... by not doing that much with my hair. I make a couple of big braids or some cornrows, put on a wig or headwrap and go.

To limit manipulation I only detangle my hair with a comb once a week. I detangle gently. I only use a comb once a week. I only touch my hair twice a week. I touch it twice a week to wash it and style it. Other than that I moisturize nightly with a spray bottle so I dont have to touch. I dont let fabrics touch my hair unless it is satin or silk

I've been oiling my hair with wild growth oil. For some reason, my hair only itches when I wake up in the morning..after that..not too much. I just love combing my hair for some reason. Maybe because I'm newly natural..i'm just excited.

I currently wear wigs. When I wear weaves and it inches I dilute shampoo in a cup and swish a soft bristle tooth brush in there & lightly scrub my scalp. It feels soooo good. Lol I've opted to wear wigs because I'm able to get to my hair better this way. I wear weaves in spring & summer as its too hot for wigs.
Hth
Another thing is to wash the weave before install along with an Acv rinse on the weave.

  • Keep my hair braided or twisted 24/7 for months on end and only finger comb one braid/twist section at a time. Meaning I don't get to touch some of my hair for days since I only move on to the next twist after I have fully combed out one and re-twisted it afresh. Mind you, I do this in the evening when watching TV but only if the twists are messy and need redoing, and I will repeat this every night for as long as I feel like it till all are done. Otherwise, I just leave well alone in whatever updo style I have, put on a baggy for the night and take it off the next morning to go to work w/o a need to fix my hair.
  • Wear hats and wraps when I don't feel like styling my twists. Usually my twists are free to do what they like under the hat or wrap, but protected by a baggy, usually Saran Wrap.
TBH, I'm so lazy that my low mani is not driven by a deliberate effort to retain hair but just comes naturally coz I hate to work hard.

When I had a twa I wore my hair in: comb coils, box braids, corn rows, wigs and kinky twists. I've given up the corn rows and wigs because my scalp itches. So no cornrows and therefore no weaves.

Now my hair is NL and I alternate between two strand twists and single coils for the most part. I will wear a twist out 1 or 2 days before wash day. I plan on sporting kinky twists and box braids for the winter.

I also do like Nonie and retwists random twists during the week. My twists unravel from the root so I may do this twice during a week for the major ones until they can't be salvaged.

I stay out of my hair mostly because I hate going to work looking crazy. So if I get it close to looking like something I try not to touch it.

Do you use weave in your twist..or just your own hair.

for the last 2 weeks Ive been trying something new since I think the prep (blow drying and combing) for my twists which I get done at the salon and kept in for 2 weeks at a time, were hindering my retention

as several posters said before me, I also consider low manipulation to be "set it and forget it", however for me 1 week is sufficient b/c when I wash its pretty low manipulation

so what I did was wash and DC hair then shingle on sunday - lasted till thursday, just washed last night, finger combed in the shower and wearing a puff today, which I'll wear untill sunday ( just adding S-curl and scarfing the edges to keep it fresh)

the week before that I twisted, wore them for 2 days, then wore a twistout for the rest of the week. My twistouts last atleast 4 days (i convert to a puff when I lose definition)

I wash and finger detangle once a week but I put my hair into a bun or updo daily when I go out and braid it into one braid every night for bed and while staying at home. I very rarely use a comb or brush though. I thought this was low manipulation.

loveurself84 Just my own hair.

Demo of me twisting (Here I had undone two twists because I wanted to blend the hairs together and part anew--something I do so that parts don't become permanent from long wear):

Demo of me finger-combing a twist section that I have just undone to remove shed hair and to redo the twist more tidily after weeks of wear (I find this very relaxing and don't need to look into a mirror doing it, so it satisfies my HIH disease while I'm watching TV):

i wash and set once a week, and try not to touch it.
i do:
blowouts
flatiron
rollersets
spiral sets
braid n curls
twist n curls
twistouts

the key is to work with the style when it gets old instead of manipulating it. add a braid to the front of a dying spiral set. make a quick updo with a few bobby pins on my fading blowout, etc.
