Naturals: Getting your hair shaped/cut

Hey:)! I have a few questions. Have any of you gotten your hair shaped after doing the BC? If so, did you do it yourself or did you get it done by a professional? Was it done on dry hair or wet hair? Lastly was it done straight/blown out hair or in it's natural state?

I'm a little over 2yrs post relaxer and 18 months natural. I hate the shape of my hair now that it has gotten longer. I have a mullet. I don't like wearing my hair out because the shape is awful. I'm planning to get my hair shaped/cut in January. I want to keep the length on the top and cut/taper/shape the back and the sides. I plan to get a devachan cut. I just want my hair to look good as my hair grows out.

I'm very interested in hearing about your experiences and any advice you want to offer. Thank you:)!

I have never gotten my hair trimmed/cut since my BC professionally. I have trimmed my own hair lightly. Luckily I like my shape, but my hair dresser wanted to put layers in my hair to shape it. I said heck no.

I would think that you would want to get it done dry in its natural shape, it is difficult to predict what shape it will be if you cut it wet because of shrinkage and straight for the same reason.

Good Luck.

Wow, I think you did an amazing job with your hair! I love:love: the shape! When I saw your siggy, I thought it was done by a professional. The shape of your hair is what I desire for myself.

Aww thank you. I think my hair is shaped like this because I have kinkier hair in the back and looser hair at the crown, so the mullet effect does not happen because of the shrinkage.

I have 4B hair throughout and being able to create an afro that has the same height all around is important to me. So having all my strands about the same length all around is what works for me. When I got my BC, I basically got my hair cut evenly all around, and so I have no need to change that so no shaping for me.

If I had floppy hair like the 3's, I might've gotten a Miss Jessie's haircut so hair flops to a cute shape. But I love having my strands all the same length because I feel I can pull off any style I want because of that.

^^^Well, I'm mainly 4B and I only hair wear my hair in stretched styles. I mainly wear twistouts and I want to start wearing braidouts. IMO, having a nice/cut shape really takes one's hairstyle to another level and looks so much better regardless of hair type.

Bumping for more responses.

^^I think that is a personal opinion. I can wear my hair in stretched styles too and it looks fine. Which is why I said I can wear any style I want.

If my hair were falling to the same level when stretched, the day I would want to wear it pinned at the top of my head, the back might not make it there. And the day I would want to wear an afro, it would look like I was pulling a Don King do.

I guess it all depends on one's ideas of styling. I just hate to be limited in what I can do with my hair.

Yes, I got a pro shape up. My hair was damp (air dried) and she did not straighten it at all. I got a great shape and she snipped the left over straight pieces off. I tld my stylist I wanted to keep the little bit of length I had, but give it some shape and I got that from her.

I was thinking of getting mine done but no scissors other than my own are coming near my head and since I don't know how to shape, I'm either gona have to learn or it is what it is. Lol.
But I agree with the above post. When my girlfriend got hers shaped, it was mostly dry in its curly state.

Nonie... when your hair is straightened does it just look like you have a layered cut?

Got my hair cut into a bob at the salon. It was cut while dry. Actually got it cut 2X in 1month.

@Your Cheeziness Do you mind sharing where you got your hair shaped up at? I noticed we are in the same area

TIA

@HappilyLiberal I believe so. These pics don't really show it properly, but I honestly have never felt a need to shape it. I could use a bit of dusting the ends, but that's about it, as far as I'm concerned. Even my pony tails seem to have a neat finish so *shrug*

Revelations Image Salon in Dallas. I went to Yolanda who specializes in natural hair and I LOVED her. The salon is hella raggedy, but her service and professionalism was superb! She consulted with me on the phone, and confirmed what I wanted twice before she started trimming. She only evened up what she said she would and I was very pleased.

I've been trying to learn to shape my own hair by doing a lot of searching on youtube but I just can't foresee myself doing a good job. Getting the back will be really hard.

I was sold on going to the salon after seeing xgoldnx on youtube's deva cut ! I'll be really upset if I mess it up my hair in trying shape it. While I don't want to cut too much off, I won't be upset if the stylist cuts more than I want to in order to achieve the look I want. At least my hair will have a nice shape and my hairstyles will look a lot better.

I hear ya! It's interesting because I feel limited with my hair right now..lol! My twistouts looked soo much better when my hair was shorter. This mullet is not the business...lol! The texture in the back of my head and the lower sides are looser so that really messes up my whole look. I wish the texture in those areas were like the rest of my hair. When my hair was shorter it was easier to tuck in but it's harder to do that now. The back also grows faster than anywhere else soo..yeah my hair looks a mess..lol!

if your trying to avoid the mullet, then you should probably get your hair cut in the way you want it to look when its dry, meaning get it cut on dry curly hair, so that it will look exactly how you want it to in that state. Devachan salons dont cut your hair straight or blown out, they cut each individual curl, and i think they do it dry.

Thanks!!!!
I have actually gone to Yolanda before for cornrows. small world. She is super sweet and really wanted to style my hair.. but at the time I was still anti-stylist.
And I agree on the bolded.
