Naturals...Do you dye your hair??

After seeing Terry McMillen on Oprah I was really tempted to dye my hair. My natural hair is jet black. On the one hand I love saying I have no chemicals in my hair. I also want to experiment with color. I am chocolate complexion so what colors will look good on me.

Rinses and semi-permanent colors work the best for me. My hair gets extremely dry and breaks from permanent colors. I'll use whatever is cheap and brownish. I have learned to buy a shade lighter than I think I want, because it always turns out darker than on the box.
Box color + your own hair color = end result...

This is what I got from Cairol's website:

Clairol haircolor is available in three levels: Semi-Permanent (Level 1), Demi-Permanent (Level 2) and Permanent (Level 3). Semi-Permanent (Level 1) haircolors last from 5-8 shampoos.

What they do:
Add color that washes out gradually and doesn't leave roots
Color without lightening
Do not change natural haircolor

How they work:

Gently add mostly large color molecules to the cortex of your hair. (The large size of the molecules in the dye limits its penetration into your hair.)
Color without using ammonia or peroxide

Use Semi-Permanent (Level 1) colors to:

Blend or cover hair that is up to 50% gray
Subtly enhance your starting haircolor

Demi-Permanent (Level 2) haircolors last up to 28 shampoos.

What they do:

Leave no noticeable root line
Color without lightening
How they work:

The actual shades are formed in the cortex by use of several dyes. Color does not shampoo out as quickly because it has actually changed the composition of the hair.
Color using no ammonia and low volume peroxide
Use Demi-Permanent (Level 2) colors to:

Blend or cover up to 50% gray
Richly enhance your starting haircolor

Permanent haircolor lasts until you change shades, your hair grows out or you cut your hair. Reapplication is recommended every 4-6 weeks to avoid noticeable re-growth.

What they do:

Change the color so that it does not wash out
How they work:

The actual shades are formed in the cortex by the interaction of several dyes. The change in the cortex is made more permanent with the use of a higher volume peroxide.
Permanent haircolor can lighten hair 2-3 shades, while high lift shades can lighten hair up to 4 shades.
Use Permanent (Level 3) colors to:

Cover up to 100% gray
Achieve subtle or dramatic haircolor changes
Lighten haircolor

Just my opinion but dyed hair is a accident waiting to happen. I wouldnt do it again unless I had my hair at a point where it could take on damage. Lifting your hair is what causes the most damage. If you can sucessfulyl dye your hair WITHOUT lift then I say go for it but bleach, ammonia, and peroxide are NOT hair friendly

girl don't do it, I don't want u to end up like me :nono:

I don't intend to use anything strong. I'll have to research this; but isn't there some sort of way that I can change/ add color without using permanent dye or bleach?

I'm not natural yet, but I remember Msportugal mentioning a product called High Beams. It's a temporary hair color spray that comes in different colors including bronze, blonde, black, burgundy, auburn etc. So if you're looking for a temporary fix, you may want to consider this. I believe she said that you could get it at sally's and some beauty supply stores. If you want temporary highlights, there are always hair mascaras.

Aveda aveda aveda!!!!!

They use a "more natural" dye. (plant extracts or something) check out their web site.

The dye job they gave me is beautiful

and non-drying

Pluse they have great customer service

*I have highlights done without bleach.

Love it and I'll be going back this spring Lord willing.

I'm natural with dyed hair. Sorry, I don't know the name of it and I get it done at a salon. You can see pics of it in my siggy. Good luck with your color.

Thanks so much for sharing everyone. :rosebud:

Super_Hero_Girl-Very pretty colors in your hair.

Well I dyed my own hair at home with Dark & Lovely's Jet Black and it was gentle. My hair is really black and I love it. :) It is definatly a keeper.

Natural Instincts in Midnight Black is also good. It's supposed to be a demi-perm but since the color's so dark it doesn't ever completely wash out (at least it hasn't yet). I dyed my hair a few months ago and the color does fade a bit--my natural color is fairly dark, so the roots blend really well. The first couple washes my color bleed and smelled like chemicals which I hated, but after that it was great. I'd definitely recommend it if you want a gentle black hair color that will last a while. Glad you found something that worked sugaplum!
