All proud nappy's why is it the stylist NEVER listens to me when I say not too much heat? Is it because they are used to flatironing only relaxed hair that only needs one pass? I don't know if they just don't feel like putting in the time, but now I have permanently straightened hair in the back and on top. She has ruined the texture by using an iron that was TOO hot!!! People are always asking what texturizer I use and I say "I just use all natural products" they're looking like yeah right! Especially NOW that it LOOKS like I had a bad texturizer!!! I am sooooooo mad! Oh yeah, and not to mention that she cut 2 1/2 inches off the ends. She showed me like 1/8th inch, but when I got home and measured, she must have cut that off about 12 times!!! I am so hurt. I've spent a year getting my hair healthy just to have it RUINED!!! The sad part is I researched and researched stylists only to end up with the SAME OL THING happening!!! I don't think I'll ever go to another stylist to have it straightened. I cried and I am too darn old to be crying over hair but I DID!!! Holla with some support if you have any suggestions I am SUPER OPEN

o goodness... im sorry that happened to you! This is why i'm petrified to go to a stylist!!

I won't ever go to anyone, but my cousin from now on. The only problem is she's 986 miles away so I'll only get to see her twice a year, but that's FINE BY ME!!!

Hey there! This happened to me last year! My hair got DEEP-FRIED! Ppl thought it was remnants of a relaxer even when I said, I've been natural for nearly 3 years!

I had to get an inch cut off and start healing my hair from scratch. i've found a good stylist 7 months later, but it took time to trust him. I still dont let him cut my hair!

I'm sorry this happened to you! I hope you find a good stylist soon.

I'm soo sorry that happened to you, makes me want to go back and :hammer:that stylists over the head!

:bighug:Feel better, at least you have the tools to properly care for your hair, so it will grow back healthier than ever.

Maybe you should keep it in protective styles for a while?

I know I'm going to be a super pain in the rear end when I'm ready to straighten. I plan on having a discussion in person BEFORE he straigthens in addition to making certain requests such as straightening my hair myself thr day before using Pinkskates blowdrying technique, using heat protectant, the stylist using mild heat and using the flat iron. If it doesn't get super straight, oh well....

I also want to talk to another stylist a friend of mine goes to in the city (NY) who only flat irons. I want to see if she thinks my hair texture can do this or if I need more heat to straighten....

All I know is, when I wet my hair after this process, my curls better spring right back...

I feel so sorry for you! Maybe moisturizing conditoners/shampoos may help? I must admit when I washed my hair yesterday and my curls came springing fort I felt RELIEVED!!!! Since it was my first time having my hair blow dried and flat ironed, I didn't know what to expect:look:

Try protein treatments and deep conditioning. That is why I won't let a stylist flat iron my hair. I can screw it up myself, thank you. Invest in a flat iron and educate yourself. A lot of ladies here like the maxiglide. You control the temp. and you can do a good job of getting it strait, too.

Oh dear, I know how it feels. A few months into my natural hair journey, I had my hair straightened by a stylist who used marcel irons and it burnt my hair straight in several areas, and it was breaking. My hair was only about 3 1/2 inches long and I was wearing a twa. I deep conditioned with moisturizing and protein treatments weekly with nexxus humectress and keraphix. The breakage immediately stopped with the treatments. Some of my damaged hair reverted back slowly, and I wind up cutting a little out. Also braidouts/twistouts camoflaged the damage pretty good.

Don't cut it, just baby it with moisturizing and protein treatments under the dryer and see if some of it will revert back. HTH. Good luck.

I am so sorry this happened to you.

IMO - Suggestioin #1 - Start learning how to do your own hair... Especially flat ironing. You have control.

Suggestion #2 And when any Stylist says "I need a t trim" I tell them NO - I will deal with it. I went to Supercuts for a trim - Because I knew those folks would not cut too much. The White folks did not cut it all off ..........

That last time I went for a Flat Iron only - the stylist said to me " you need a trim, but the ends are not split" .... HUH????????????

So I promptly told her NO - Came home - use my maxiglide - and everything was FINE!
You cannot listen to these people - PERIOD.

I'm so sorry this happened. I read this last night before I went to bed and was thinking about you. :bighug: I don't know what to suggest. Even though you tell stylists one thing, most of them think they know best. Also, if this wasn't a natural salon, I think a great many black people are simply unfamiliar with the concept of wanting to wear your hair in full nappiness. So they aren't even thinking about the need for it to revert. What to suggest? I was going to suggest going to a natural salon and working with someone who does true natural styles as well (not straightening, but twistouts and things like that) so that they understand the importance of texture, having a conversation with them beforehand to let them know that you don't care if your hair doesn't come out stick straight, as long as it doesn't get burned, and maybe watching them work on someone else's hair (though I don't think you'd know the heat damage unless you went to that person's home a week later and watch them wash their hair). I don't know. Or even better, learn how to straighten your own hair. So sorry. :(

Can I just say I LOVE ALL OF YOU!!! :blowkiss: I needed to vent and you all so came through for me! I am moving to Houston soon where there are two natural shops that I have learned about via the forum. I plan on straightening my hair myself if I ever decide to do it again. I'm not sure at this point that I will EVER do it again. I LOVE MY NAPS! THANKS Y'ALL. I am really feeling the love...group hug! :grouphug3:

You had me cracking up because I had little thoughts of doing just that! sneaking up and giving her a big shot to the forehead like that v-8 commercial!!! :hardslap:

Thanks! I am so scared to straighten right now it's crazy, but I will keep this in mind for the future.

Awesome advice thanks!

I definitely feel your pain...I have had that happen as well as my hair burned off completely in one area because the stylists was not paying attention with the pressing comb. I am sorry.

I blowdry and flat iron my own hair now. I went to my stylist in December and she did a good job. I went to a Dominican Salon for my birthday and she deep fried my hair. it doen't even feel the same. It looks like I had a bad texturizer too. :perplexed Don't worry. Just take extra precautions to get it back on the right track again.

Hey I dont Stay Far from Houston only 60 miles away!
Can Someyone Please Tell Me the names of These Natural Salons are So i can Stop Turning To The Pressing Comb And Heat For help?

I only know of "Uncle Funky's Daughter" and "Soulsister". You can google natural hair salons in Houston for more, but these two seem to have great reviews. HTH!

:yep::yep::yep:

The best thing you can do for yourself and your hair is to learn how to do it yourself. If you are capable and are fed up with sub-par service, you should try to learn your own hair. Very few people will take care of your hair like you will.

So sorry this happened to you. This is just reinforcing my feeling that I should do my hair myself for my 2 year anniversary coming up instead of going to a salon. I'm scared of a setback (I haven't had any...thank God). Just baby it, deep condition, protective styles, moisture, moisture, moisture and some if not all of it may revert. :)
