I am sooooo close to going natural, I am kind of nervous to do so, b/c it's such a huge change. I would like to know from those who were relaxed and went natural, what are the major benefits of being a natural girl?!? Please motivate me!

Honey, there is no comparison! Being natural is the best thing I've ever done for my hair and myself. No longer do I need to concern myself with new growth, touch-ups, scalp burns and hiding from the rain. I can wash my hair whenever I want to and have clean, fresh beautiful hair every day. In other words, every day is a good hair day now. My hair is 1,000 times stronger than it was when relaxed. Breakage has been virtually eliminated. Natural hair is also very versatile. For me, it is the best of all worlds. Can you tell I absolutely love my natural hair???

my major benefit is freedom!! i dont have to be a slave to the relaxer anymore...if i dont want to go to a salon, i dont have to. i like walking in the rain with no umbrella, while everyone else is dashing into building to protect the hair. my hair is now longer than its EVER been, and my preparation time is as long or as short as i want it to be....i never have to give another person money to do my hair if i dont want to. i can do it myself! ah, sweet freedom....

oh, and i forgot about all the people that looooooove to touch my hair (myself included!) no one was coming up to me at walmart asking me questions about my hair and asking if they can touch it when i was relaxed!

I co-sign with the responses in this thread. I don't have to plan hair appointments around big events, I can scratch my scalp all I want to, I'll be saving money with far less hair apointments, my hair will be healthier, blah, blah, blah, I could go on and on....

Well, I used to religiously base my scalp before getting a touch-up and I never got burned... but its clear from my newgrowth... that my body was still absorbing some of the chemical. The skin is a very absorbtive tissue... and a lot of stuff can get into your body through it. I believe your body is a little healthier without contact with the chemicals.

I like that I'm also saving money (a lot) by not getting touch-ups.

I just really enjoy the fact that I can look at myself in the mirror and see me. I don't know if that makes any sense but it is hard to explain. I mean I have always been me but I just get a great feeling when I look at my hair. I mean with a relaxer you are always hiding your hair. When you get new growth you have to straighten it to blend it and do things to keep it from reverting. I don't know if I make any sense but it just does my heart good to see my hair...my hair.

Also, my hair is sooo much healthier. My relaxed hair was about bra strap and thick when I cut it but it wasn't healthy. I remember I used to run my hand through it and I would see little broken hairs. I hated that. I don't have that problem anyone. I see little to no breakage and that is not something I even think about anymore. I just don't really have to worry about the overall health of my hair anymore. I just keep it moisturized that is pretty much it.

The benefits of natural hair for me are:
I can scratch when I want to.
I don't have to worry about scalp burns( even if you've never gotten scalp burns, you still worry about it.)
I don't have to run from the rain.
I don't have to worry about what the chemical may or may not be doing to my body.
If I'm going to get sick from chemical exposure, at least let it be a chemical that I don't voluntarily put on my head every 8 weeks. (Not saying that I will get sick from relaxers, but not saying that they "safe" either)
Total hair freedom.
I don't have to worry about sweating out a style.
I don't have to worry about sleeping cute.
I can wet my hair whenever I want.
I see ME just as God created me when I look in the mirror.

I would have to say that the MAIN benefit of wearing my natural is realizing that I REALLY AM beautiful the way that I was created. The things that the other ladies stated are just gravy after that fact.

I agree with the above.
No chemicals being put in/on my body is a biggie for me.
Freedom from all day hair salon events.
Just learning how to work with what God gave me.

Ditto! I also love the fact that I no longer have to waste hours and hours in the hair salon just to get a freakin' touch up.

Pretty much what she said, but I still have bad hair days :ohwell:

not being cocoky but i am beautiful with natural hair. straight. flat hair just doesnt look good on me. it just isnt me. i dont know what i was thinking when i went to get a relaxer for the first time. oh well, i relaxed it, experienced it, and it was hell. cant wait for my natural hair to grow and do its thing :)

I was on the fence when I joined LHCF but now I'm a hardcore natural. The benefits for me:

Super thick and lush hair- my hair was thick with a relaxer but not as thick as now.. I think it will benefit me most once my hair gets longer- it will be really hard to have see through ends. Straightened natural hair IMHO tends to look shinier and nicer as well.

No fear of over/under-processing or other chemical mishaps.

No salon trips or dependency on hair stylists.

Not blanketing the bathroom floor with broken hair all the time- this is probably an issue of care in addition to the relaxer

Stronger hair that doesn't snap as easily (I won't lie it's still a challenge). I know there are plenty of longer hair relaxed ladies here but for me, relaxed really undermined my hair's strength.

Opportunity to discover and love your texture

Versatility

Natural hair makes me feel more unique and unconventional (which is a good thing)

Basically what everyone else is saying...

  • It's cheaper
  • My hair is healthier
  • I can get my hair wet without freakin' out
  • I can wash my hair everyday and just go
  • It's extremely versatile
:ohwell: I guess I won't be relaxing my hair in December...

Thanks for starting this thread Chocolate!

The best benefit is not having to do touch ups every 2 months or so and not having to worry about if this perm will burn your hair, scalp, leave you bald-no worries, mon. I also like the thickness and the health of my natural hair, yes it is unruly sometimes but finding the right products and styles makes all the diff. And I've never gotten as many compliments relaxed as I have when natural natural compliments -it's either is that all your own hair, or wow your hair is so thick andlong when pressed. hth

1. My hair looks so much better pressed--thick, soft, luscious.
2. Sets look so much better--spiral sets, braidouts, etc.
3. No scalp burns
4. No chemical smell
5. Don't need a bunch of products
6. I feel prettier and people tell me I look more exotic.

I agree with errything errybody said.... especially about not worrying about scalp burns & irritation which was what I hated most about relaxing.

Amen to that sister

OMG the wash goes...gotta love it :) And not worrying about having to blend my new growth like I had to do when I was relaxed. To alot of people...str8 hair = "done" hair. I love the wild look..esp the fullness and the volume.
And its really amazing that I only use TWO...friggin TWO products in my hair.

This is such a great thread, I have been so tempted to relax lately but reading this thread makes me want to stick this transitioning thing out.

Ditto what everyone else said! :yep: I also love the fact that you can have :censored: with your man and not worry about sweating out your hair. :look: :look: :look:

Okay,
looking forward to everything the ladies have said except the no umbrella comment. Brown sugar melts in the water.....:-)

Please stick it out! You won't regret it! ;)

An inexplicable freedom...

My hair is longer and healthier now than it has been in years. Even more dynamics of style than when I was permed.
