the only time i trim my hair is when it is straightened, for this exact reason. yes you can trim curly/kinky hair, but there is a certain technique that most people don't know. i'd rather straighten and get a good stylist to trim it for $5 than get a "specialist" to trim it unstretched for $20+.@5:40 The woman was right. She said that the stylist should have straightened it or blown it out before cutting it. I am natural and the only time I cut my hair is when I blow it out and flat iron it. There is no way you are going to get an even cut if you cut it in its natural state especially if you have really tight coils you have to tug at to cut.
Also when straighten it you can see damage better because 4a/b coily hair will show damage well compared to it in its natural state.
be careful with that now. in 2009, i got my first trim since my BC and i went to hair cuttery specifically so i could get a white girl to trim my hair. i don't know if i just got the one from the hood or she thought that since i was black she had to talk to me a certain way, but the first thing out her mouth was "ooh, you need a touchup!" like i said, i was natural. after the looooong talk i gave her about exactly what i wanted her to do, she STILL gave me a blunt CUT instead of trimming my splits.I'm a subbie as well and I feel awful that she lost so much progress due to a trim that was actually a cut. Also for the sytlist to say that the Good Hair is in the back...I mean like really???erplexed It's a shame that if you want a true trim you have to visit a YT salon. My heart goes out to her.
i feel her pain. this is EXACTLY how i felt in june when my stylist gave me that hack job. yes my hair was straight and yes she cut it evenly, but she took off WAY too much when in the past she had NEVER cut more than i asked. i'm not letting anyone else near my head with scissors, either.
