Natural at the Job!

I think it's cool that most of you are comfortable wearing your natural hair at work. I know it would be a problem at my very corporate office. One of the girls wore extensions and the whole office was abuzz. NO one in my office wears natural hair and even the ones who wear weaves get nasty comments from some of the white people. It's terrible. If i even wear my donut bun I get asked "Is that all your hair"? It pisses me off.

I'm a bit confused. How do other people (especially white people) know that someone else is wearing a weave? And it seems like your office doesn't have a problem with natural hair but it does seem like everyone has a lot of time on their hands and is in everyone else's business.

The white people love it. It's usually the black people who have a problem.

ITA- When I came in with my TWA last July, my clear co-workers were all smiles and giving my compliments. The black ppl were giving me the side eye or kinda silent. LOL

I had to inform my boss on shrinkage. She asked me why is my hair short sometimes and then the next day it is long. LOL

I have pics of some hairstyles in my BC & progress photo albums. Half of my work fro is in my avatar.

I think the only way they know is if you come in with short hair one day and long the next. They only really notice drastic changes. But it's really none of their business, IMO.

I don't work yet, but I will be looking for work this fall. I am almost 2 years past my big chop, and a lot of times I wear my hair pulled back in a clip, in sort of a french roll. I might use a little fantasia gel on my edges sometimes. I love the length of my hair because it gives me more options.

I work in a non profit setting and our office is business casual

I wear twists, braided updos, yarn braids, twist outs, and curly fros with headbands

You can't go wrong with the french roll or keeping it in a clip. I like double buns too.

Because I wore my hair up often, people started asking me why don't I wear it down or do you ever wear it straight. Remember, as long as it's neat then it isn't anyone's business and you have a right to not put up with ANYONE who talks down to you. Boss included. :yep:

I work at a very natural hair friendly place. Usually I wear a pony puff or a rinse and go with a headband. I want to try some other styles like twists and such too.

I'm a teacher. I alternate between twist outs, braid outs, and the fro with a handband of some color or another. I've just ventured to wearing a puff. A lot of the styles, the people at work either like or don't comment on.

You know what, with all the busted weaves and wigs I see at my workplace, I wish someone would say something about my hair.

I am a nurse in an ICU and I wear my hair every kind of way I can. The only thing I'm toning down on is the 'fros because I don't want my hair falling in my patients beds or on sterile areas. Twists, puffs, coils, etc all look professional in my eyes,

I'm an attorney and I wear twists, wash and gos, and fros all of the time. I flat-iron my hair length checks maybe twice a year, and that's all. I'm the only black person at the office, and no one cares. They notice every time I do something different, but it's always "ooh, I like that hairstyle on you too!" Actually, most of the women at the office have some form of curly hair that they all flat-ironed straight every day; because of me they're all having a NO HEAT summer too! Gotta love it!

I work in an office - business causal, jeans not allowed.

I usually wear any of the styles that are in my album. Lately, I've been rocking two strand twists, either down, partially pulled up, or totally pulled up. Today, I'm wearing the back pulled up in a flat bun, and the front twists are down like bangs - and I've gotten two compliements, both from the black women I work with (and you know we are the main ones with issues with the natural hair), so it goes over very well.

I don't wear a fro/big styles because that's just not my style - all this hair loose all over my head would be MOST distracting. :nono:

I'm a corporate accounts manager for a global telecommunications company. I wear my hair however I feel like wearing it. I am customer facing (meaning i'm expected to go out & visit my clients) & still I wear my hair anyway I want to. I braid, twist, knot, cornrow, bun, twist out, braid out, & fro.

Trust, they don't want a lawsuit :) I do me because I WANT to reacquaint EVERYONE I come in contact with, with nappy hair. :yep:

My officemates rarely comment & I don't care for their opinions, or their hair for that matter

I'm an attorney. Since I started working with my firm, I kept my hear in wigs and weaves. I decided I was going to start wearing my own hair last month. I was very scared. I kept envisioning my boss calling me into his office and telling me that my hair was not appropriate or something.:look: And alas nothing like that ever happened. I just realized the fear was all in my head. I work around all white people and honestly white people usually don't care or notice. In fact, no one said anything. The paralegal one day said she liked my hair hair (it was a fresh twist out). Otherwise I wear puffs, or wash and gos.

I'm newly natural. I have a twa and mostly wear it slicked down with a part on the side. But lately I have been wearing a twa. People in the office like it. If they dont' they know better not to tell me about it.

I pretty much do what I want. I dont think I would wear a BAA to my office, just because its an office , but as of now I still have in my mini-braids (goin on 2 months now) and I can style them different ways with clips and things, even though I usually dont! LOL I love the way they hang so I just leave them be.

i am a project manager so im out on construction sites all day long so no one cares they like the wash and gos to but i change up my hair so much they never know if its me or not lol

I wear a TWA. They say nothing. I've been complimented by plenty, and for those that don't like it, they're professional enough to keep their mouth closed.

Considering all of the straggly, hair many people wear around here (of all ethnicities) no one could really open their mouths anyway.

my boss has flat ironed almost apl natural hair... I've done a puff/poof braids really crappy extension braids I did myself, flatironed but usually in a bun or plaits....or a banded ponytail.... it's hilarious when I come in to work with flatironed APL hair and they're like OMG!!!!!!!!!! WHERE"D THAT HAIR COME FROM????? um my head......then the next day the power of shrinkage is in full effect and I ave a neck length pony tail and they're like omg you cut your hair!!!! then the next day I could wear it loose and curly and I'll get tons of compliments and the usual "you should wear your hair out more often!" :lachen:

This is too cute! I love the bang/headband :yep:

i think more acclimated to natural hair because there are more ladies out there rocking their natual curls. i can remember during campaign coverage there was a chick always on CNN (I think her last name was Holmes) who always had a wng. I thought that was cool.

I work in a lab so almost anything goes but I will 90% of the time where my hair in a conditioned and oiled chignon/knot. Occassionally I will straighten, roller set, blow out, etc but mainly my protective style. The only negative comments I have gotten were from other black women who have damaged hair on their heads.

i rarely wear my out
but when i do i pull it back into a puff

all other times i wear wigs or wrap my head

I work for an insurance company, and our office is business casual (although lots of these folks show up looking straight up like Farmer Brown). I wear it pretty much in twist outs all the time. But I have come in with it in twists, especially when it was first growing out. I wear bun wraps coordinated with my outfits, and I have brought out the BAA in celebration of summer. No one says anything. I am always neat and groomed, and I think that's what counts, moreso than the specific style.

But I recognize that all work places are different. I've only ever worked in the insurance industry, and I've been in Charlotte and Atlanta since I've been natural. I've felt comfortable in both venues.

I see many girls in the military that are unable to wear their hair. All the hair rules are centered around black women having relaxed hair.. I think out of all work environments, this is the worst because there are rules restricting women from styling natural hair. No 2 strand twists, only certain buns, no puffs, only small braids, only 6 cornrows braided straight back, etc. But weaves are highly encouraged! go figure!

i work in a very professional type enviornment and i have bee wearing my twa in a wash and go. no one had a problem with it i think because my hair is naturally very curly. but i just blow dried it to make it an afro and im kind of scared to wear it to work tomorrow. but im going to do it anyway. if they say something then i will just tell them that im not changing my hair for anyone.
and i agree with those of you that said its the blacks that have a problem with natural hair. when i chopped all my hair off i got so many compliments from white people. one lady was like "thats so kool that it grows out of your head like that". lol what can ya do...

You can look at any of my Fotki pictures to see how I wear my hair to the office. Mostly out in wash and gos. The occasional twist and curl. Been bunning most of this week and since I rollerset yesterday I may bun for a few more days. I'm one of the few people who cannot wear a rollerset out -- my straight hair is like cotton candy.
