My self relaxer didn’t go according to plan. Help

I tried self relaxing yesterday, but my roots haven’t been straighten, I don’t have a clue what I did wrong. Can someone have a quick look at what I did and suggest the best way to correct it.

I sectioned my hair into fours and based my scalp with Motions scalp protector.

Then cover my relaxed hair with grape seed oil to prevent overlapping.

I used Arcadian clip method and put the clips above the new growth.

I then mix the relaxer (OCR no-lye regular) put the relaxer on to the roots using a tinting brush, squeezed the relaxer through the new growth and smoothed it down using my fingers for 10 mins.

I wash the relaxer out put the Affirm 5 in 1 reconstructor on and sat under the dryer for 5 minuets.

I then washed it and wash my hair 8 times (I got using Isoplus neutralising shampoo).

Then conditioned and roll set my hair.

At the moment my hair feels a little dry and brittle.

Hmmm...you said you washed 8 times? Is your hair overly porous? What kind of conditoner did you use? Was it a deep conditoner or did you apply and rinse out minutes later?

Your new growth should be straight. Why did you shampoo so much? What kind of moisturizing conditioner did you use?

Neutralizing shampoo (even though it's essential) can be very drying. And you said you used yours 8 times so I think that may be why your hair is dry.

I self relax also, I know when my hair doesnt get very straight it's because:

the parts weren't small enough
I didnt use enough relaxer
I applied the relaxer very slowly

You have to work fast and apply a generous amount of relaxer, I know a lot of self relaxers in the beginning dont apply enough for fear that they will overprocess.

That Isoplus neutralizing shampoo is MURDER on the hair. It's really drying and stripping.
I use it, but I follow with a regular shampoo after (CON Green) I would never shampoo 8 times...
I would do a DC and see how that makes it feel.

Yes you definitely need to DC at least 2x this week, moisturize your hair and seal. 8x is way too many times to be using any kind of shampoo. All you did was strip your hair of moisture.

Yeah, I agree with the other ladies about the over-shampooing.

To make sure my hair is neutralized properly, I wash 2 times with neutralizer shampoo. Each time, I apply the shampoo, gently massage it into my hair, and let it sit for 5 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.

At this point, you need a DC to restore your moisture level.

Please get rid of that neutralising shampoo, I used it on my friend after a relaxer and her hair felt so dry and I suspected it didn't properly neutralise her hair.
I agree, do a DC and try not to wash your hair that many times after a relaxer, you can let the neutralising shampoo (NOT isoplus) sit in your hair for at least 5 minutes after 2 washes and then you should be ok.

Sorry to hear your self relaxer didn't go well, I had something similar the first time I had my friend relax my hair.

DC, DC, DC!

Good luck.

P.S. Do you have Roux Porosity Control?

perhaps the reconstructor is not supposed to be used with heat?

I am wondering if the reconstructor part is what did it too. I have never heard of doing anything like sitting under a dryer without neutralizing first. I would be scared to do this personally. You need to do a few DC like some of the other ladies suggested.

I used the Replenishing Pak that came with the relaxer.

I only washed my hair 8 times cause I could get the suds to turn white:ohwell: The relaxers taken in patches, there areas that a straight, areas a little kinky and other where my hair is how it was before.

How long to I have to wait before I can do a corrective relaxer?

1. The oil. I don't know why putting oil in your hair right before a relaxer is such a big thing on LHCF. I know this is purposed is to protect the previously processed hair, but it usually leads to underprocessing b/c the oil is going to get on your NG, too. Careful application is a better technique & a little bit of overlapping is not the end of the world....seriously.

2. You don't need to wash your hair with neutralizer 8 times. 2-3 times is sufficient. Any more will be drying. As long as it is worked in well & then allowed to sit & actually neutralize, following the color indicators of the foam....you'll be fine.

ETA: That mid-step protein is something that I don't do, so I can't help you much with that, but like the other ladies said, I don't think you should stop and condition your hair w/ heat in the middle of relaxing.

I don't know your hair type, but 10min for me would be a joke.:nono: Even when I was telaxing I had to leave it on for 20-30 to get to a loose wave. Also it does sound like you shampooed to much and stripped the hair of it's natural oils. I used Optimum OptiCleanse Neutralizing Conditioning Shampoo no matter what relaxer and it left my hair super soft.

Can you post some pictures so we can see?

You should do a corrective at a salon in about 6 to 8 weeks. I don't know if you want bone straight hair, or texlaxed hair, but make sure you let the stylist know.

Regardless on how straight you want hair to be, make sure you protect your previously relaxed hair with some oil, or some kind if thick grease so there is no run on.

Hope that works for you!

That's a good point. Those timings on the package are usually insufficient to actually get the hair straight.

I use the whole affirm (fiberguard) system and so I also use the reconstructor (if its the sustenance fortifying treatment) that you're talking about. Lots of people do a protein/reconstructor after a good rinse before neutralizing - just not with heat. Also, if you're having problems getting your color indicator shampoo to come out clean, do a good rinse, then use the shampoo and let it sit for a few minutes before you rinse it out to give it a chance to work, that way you may not feel the need to was so many times. I wash twice only and it comes out clean.

I blame the Isoplus. I have a half empty bottle of that stuff sitting in my shower and I hate it. It makes my hair very difficult to detangle and just a mess. AND it took forever to get white suds. I prefer Elasta Qp Stop Action neutralizing shampoo, but it's for lye relaxer, I don't know if it can used for no-lye relaxer.

If you rinse with apple cider vinegar after your first neutralizing shamopoo and make sure you rinse well before you start to shampoo, you really will be okay with only two washes. Relaxers are alkaline (basic) and the acid in the vinegar naturally neutralizes without stripping the hair...make sure you use one part vinegar to three parts water.

Maybe the relaxer you used is not compabitable with your hair texture. Also, do you take any medications that would interfere with the process? Years ago, before I took medication, I used to have the nappiest hair you could ever imagine. My stylist could only use Dudley super to tame it. Now, I have thin hair and can only use Affirm sensitive scalp.

Oh yeah, ditch the Isoplus shampoo. Take it as a loss.

It may be that you didn't leave the relaxer on long enough. I self relax also using dark and lovely. I'm so slow at it that it takes me almost 30 minutes to finish and my hair never comes out underprocessed. Imagine if I was as fast as you and only took 10 minutes, mine would be totally underprocessed. Also, I agree that it's important to use a generous amount of relaxer, I mix the whole tub instead of just half and I use as much as I need without worrying about running out and trying to ration it out

The shampoo’s gone in the bin. I've DC my hair and it seems a little soft but it still looks very dull. Im just grateful it hasn't fallen out.

Could anyone recommend an alternative relaxer?
