My natural hair is breaking

Hi all,

I'm experiencing breakage - small crescent shaped hairs, half an inch hairs and where I get shedding I check the strand and can see half way down the shaft splits down the shaft and then right at the tip the strand separates into two parts.

My hair breaks when wet but when dry, provided it's moisturized it doesn't break as much.

Reggie:

DC with herbal essences beautiful ends conditioner or an amla powder treatment.

Moisturize daily with s-curl and jbco

Last week I decided to do a hard core protein treatment with aphogee 2 step and I'm experiencing some improvement, but the ends are still breaking. I stopped using S-curl and now moisturize with jbco and almond oil. I spritz with water and conditioner.

I find manipulation is too much for my hair so i try to stick to low manipulation styles and pony up at night as I found twisting it for bed also contributed to the breakage.

Any advice?

The bolded really stands out to me because my hair is the same way, especially if it's manipulated too much. Is your hair soaking wet or damp when you spritz with moisturize with water and conditioner? Do you always seal your hair when you spritz with moisture and conditioner?

How is the water and conditioner spritz working for you? Maybe a product with a creamy consistency would be better for your hair. In my case, products with a creamy consistency (Curl Prep's Sweet Buttah and the Jane Carter Solution Hair Nourishing Cream) work much better than spritzes because the constant application of liquid leads to more breakage for my hair.

Are you fine haired? So many things here smack of skinny strands (like me).

Great catch in knowing that severe wet breakage means you need a little more protein. You started off well with doing the aphogee. You will need to do another protein treatment in 2 weeks. OR try a different type of protein within a week. Varying proteins can be helpful I'm finding. Ex--one week is egg protein (fresh, raw). And the next is a panthenol containing condish. This way I'm not overloading my hair. Just be careful and check to see how your strands respond.

Also, skip wet manipulation altogether. Others make extole the virtues of detangling with wet hair or hair soaking in condish--but some of us just cant handle it! I learned this almost a year ago: wet hair mani = lost hair. I now finger detangle on DRY hair BEFORE washing. I will seal with a butter or oil and wait til it's dry (unless doing a wet set) before styling.

Yes, time for a trim as well.

If you dont have a seamless comb, time to get one to decrease those midshaft splits. As the strands grow, you can just trim them out. Also, I'm hearing that wet manipulation might also contribute to midshaft splits. I'm unsure myself, just passing info along.

Are you moisture DCing with heat?Might want to do that once or twice a week.

Search for the Struggling With Your Natural Hair thread...! Lots of info in there. Good luck

Thanks for the advice. I do have fine strands. I don't often dc with heat but I do so overnight. Ill try doing it with heat next time. I suspect ill have to trim off at least 4 inches to get rid of the mid strand splits.

Noooooooo! Our hair tends to get over-moisturized easily. I would stop overnight conditioning.

Definitely agree, if you're DCing overnight with a conditioner or anything waterbased, you're weakening the hair. You can still do this though, but solely with oils, no water. Penetrating oils (like coconut or olive) are great for this because they'll enter the cortex and protect the hair from expanding too much while you wash it. In other words, prevents breakage.
