My Hair Story Started Like This.

Starting at a very young age(about 8 years old) I notice that most people in my family had that long silky hair, and most of them are natural( from my mother side) so I wanted hair like that, but my hair didn't look nothing like everybody else in my family I wanted hair like my cousins, just like this:

But my hair looked like this:

Oops I mean like this:

So when i was about 14 I insisted so much in getting my hair relaxed, so it finally happened I had that silky hair I always wanted, I was in love with my hair

As much as I liked my hair, I didn't like the fact that I had to get it relaxed every 3 month, I couldn't leave it wet, I had to spend a lot of money just to maintain it looking good, and all whole bunch of other things that I wasn't happy with, so I started contemplating the idea of going natural, at the time I didn't remember how my hair really felt and looked when I was a lilgirl, it was a lilbit scary for me, I though about transitioning but knowing me I knew I wasn't gonna be able to deal with two different texture.
And one day after coming from work I did my first BIG SHOP that was in 2008!!!!

And this was my first hair style:

This was a couple of day after the Big Chop

And about 6 month after BC:
a6890eea-6bf1-cfd0.jpg

And a year later I decided to straighten my hair for the first time ton check my growth:

a6890eea-6d57-f628.jpg

a6890eea-6d84-c623.jpg

I never had my hair another color but black, so since I didn't had relaxer in my hair anymore, I started playing with colors:

a6890eea-6e84-68c3.jpg

a6890eea-6eb4-86e8.jpg

Here u can see how the bleach made my curls looser, I had very hight curls before bleaching:
a6890eea-6f3f-608a.jpg

a6890eea-6f68-e80e.jpg

I wanted my hair Lighter so I went lighter:

a6890eea-7097-d497.jpg

a6890eea-70f8-4cf5.jpg

a6890eea-712f-50b4.jpg

But because of this I ended up with bleach damage, and then my curls looked horrible just like this:

a6890eea-71af-cae0.jpg

As u can see, my ends were straight just like if i had then relaxed and in order for me to get my curls looking good I made another mistake, I started using a curling iron.
It looked like that:
a6890eea-724b-07ce.jpg

So now not only I had bleach damage but also heat damage I don't think it gets worse than that.

So I decided to BC again for the second time.

a6890eea-74d5-402e.jpg

As u can see I cut all the heat and bleach damage I had, so in about 2 years I BC twice.

Then I played with even more color, a reddish blonde:

now this is the funny part, I always like the phony pony, or however u want to called them but I never found my color, so I was like, there so many in black, I think I should dye my hair black again, anyway I had it black before so, here I come again and dye it black, now this was a day before going to my country, don't laugh at what u are about to see:

a6890eea-7642-f099.jpg

I hated this it was horrible, my hair was hard the color was like blue, OMG what have I done? i said to my self, but I couldn't do much I was leaving next day so I bought my draw string pony and it looked ok:

a6890eea-77cb-c3aa.jpg

a6890eea-784f-217e.jpg

a6890eea-78e8-61ce.jpg

The pony looked good but my hair was a mess:

a6890eea-7956-9f62.jpg

And for some reason a few week after being there the my hair was turning green, and brown and a whole bunch of different colors:
a6890eea-7a05-d9bb.jpg

I don't know if being in the water for long periods of time had anything to do with it, I was going to the river everyday, all I knew was that I had to do something about my hair, AGAIN..
So I bleach it again, u might be thinking is she crazy?
I'm not but I didn't like the black color on me anymore and I though it was already messed up so what did I had to loose?
I bleach it about 2 days before coming back to US, and that's when I started using the sambumbio my grandmother made as a DC, now when I got back home I cut my hair again, I don't consider this a BC even thought it was about 3 inches or so, but I got rid of the end that were kind of straight and damage. This is the day I got back from DR:

now my hair look like this:

a6890eea-7be2-7aff.jpg

This is my growth so far up till 12/30/10

Now the plan is not to have anymore BC,lol and grow my hair as long as it can, I'll be updating with pictures and detail info of what ever it is I'll be doing.

Girl, you did all kinds of stuff to your hair! lol I'm glad you've finally decided to leave it alone. Pretty hair! Happy hair growing!

More power to you OP, you have dealt with some set backs and you're still going strong. your hair is beautiful!

Your hair is beautiful.

BTW: Are you sure that dude chuckin' up deuces in his underwear in the water wouldn't mind this picture being on the internet? LOL.

Wow girl you have a lot of documentation lol. Well thanks for taking us on your journey. I hope 2011 is a good year for your hair :-)

Your curls are so cute and defined. I really liked your curls in this pic they were just toooo adorable...

Reminds me when I had blond hair...man I miss it sometimes *sighs* those were the days. I expressed my "moods" in my hair color (just like a mood ring all the time lol). I was a 'Manic Panic' chick. I was blond, red, orange, blue, purple, pink, black, green whatever color you name! But when I decided I wanted healthy hair and long hair I knew I was gonna have to quit dying it all kinds of colors, just go cold turkey! So I think your gonna have to make a choice on the hair color. I say if you love color invest in different colored wigs or colored hair pieces (clip in ones) and when you get that "itch" to dye just play around with them until your "itch to color" phase passes.

I'm glad you shared your journey.:yep: You about to make me go out and buy a blond wig girl. lol

I understand the pressure to want hair like others in your family. My mom and sister have similar textures of hair, loose curl, fast growing. My hair probably resembles my father (don't know him). My hair is like mom's in nape and sides, and gets progressively kinkier up to the crown. As a child people would almost push me to the side to get to my sister and comment on her "pretty good hair". They would even ask me "don't you wish you had your mom's hair?" I quickly got the impression that my hair must be bad so yea, I began to long for their hair. My mom would try to make me feel better and even started cutting off my sister's hair so that we were similar in length. I love her for what she tried to do but the damage was done. Besides, she referred to her own hair as "good hair" and mine as "rough". That is just how it was and still is.

Years have past and I have grown to love my hair. I have found that my kinkier areas grow faster and longer. My sides and nape break easier. I wish that all of my hair were the kinkier texture of my crown. I am also discovering that my hair grows too as I am learning to take better care of my hair and no longer let the hair dressers cut off all the length I gain.

Congrats on your hair journey and I hope you and all on this forum are successful in achieving your hair goals in the new year!

When you said "pic heavy", you weren't lying...it was really a journey. I feel like I know you AND your hair now.

Wow, thas exactly how I felt back then, I mean people can be so cruel sometimes specially if u are a child, but I learned that it don't matter how your hair is as long as you learn to love it, thanks for you comment and have a happy new year with lots of growth.

U think henna would give me a similar color to the one I have now? I've never try it cause I wasn't sure, i thought it would come out red
Yea henna will make your hair red. Plus, its not advisable to use henna over chemical color. I'm not sure why though..

wow your hair is really pretty. i love the second color that you did, although it caused the most damage. and ur straightened natural hair is pretty and shinier than the relaxed hair. ♥

this was an amazing walk through....i am impressed with the detail that you kept on your hair.

your hair is and was beautiful.

i am glad you now appreciate your curls and the versatility of your natural gorgeous hair!

take good care of those tresses now.....i'm gonna be watching out for your healthy hair journey progress. :)
