This is one of my fears for when I have children. I mean, the trade-off is a wonderful one, but still. Mommies gotta look nice too!

The hair loss is hormonally induced, right? Cant you go to a doctor and get meds (safe for breast feeding) that will restore your hormone levels to normal?

maybe protien treatments and vitamins? i'm not sure if you can to much to stop it maybe less manipulation will help too

Sorry to hear this. My cousin has a theory about this (she has two kids). She said that relaxers are the culprit. She noticed that white women (or women of other races who do not relax) do not experience postpartum shedding. According to her the chemicals in relaxers don't mesh well with whatever chemicals/hormones pregnant women take when they have their babies (can't remember what specifically). I haven't done my own research on this but it makes sense. Maybe some naturals who've had babies can chime in as to whether they experienced shedding or not. I know it doesn't help you much now but it may come in handy for future reference.
For now, I agree with keeping up the protein treatments, moisturizing and babying your hair as much as possible. Good luck and try not to stress about it too much. It will get better

Awe, I am sorry to hear this. I know that when my hair was shedding I used affirm in 5 en 1 reconstructor it nipped my shedding right in the bud. (My shedding was not pregancy related) Keep positive, from what these ladies are saying in seems like its temporary. I wish you the best!

KhandiB, don't panic. I have been there and done that. I will grow back as soon as your hormones levels get back to normal.

Wanna know something funny? I was really excited about my hair when I got pregnant with my daughter. All the other mothers in my family kept telling me how my hair was going to get thicker, longer, and shinier while I was pregnant, because it happened for them. I have always had the thickest hair in the family, so I was looking forward to some outrageously thick and lush hair.

Well, the exact opposite happened. My hair was falling out the entire time I was pregnant. And in the months after my daughter was born, it was like my hair was giving me a "big finish". But I just had to moisturized a lot and wait.

Yeah, it will stop coming out and grow back. Don't worry.

The hair loss doesn't happen to everyone. It's just rolling the dice. Just don't let it stop you from bringing in the little ones. Even if your pregnancy doesn't make your hair fall out, your going to pull it out yourself over the kids ... especially when they get old enough to start talking back to you.

Many new moms are surprised to find themselves shedding more hair than usual sometime in the first few months after giving birth, but it's perfectly normal. And there's no need to panic. You won't go bald. In fact, your hair should be back to normal by your baby's first birthday.

Here's what's going on. Normally, about 85 to 95 percent of the hair on your head is growing and the other 5 to 15 percent is in a resting stage. After the resting period, this hair falls out (often while you're brushing or shampooing your hair) and is replaced by new growth. The average woman sheds about 100 hairs a day.

During pregnancy, increased levels of estrogen prolong the growing stage so there are fewer hairs in the resting stage and fewer falling out each day, so you have thicker, more luxuriant tresses. But after you give birth, your estrogen levels take a tumble and a lot more hair follicles enter the resting stage — and that means more hair coming out in the shower or on the brush. This unusual shedding will taper off and your hair will be back to its pre-pregnancy thickness about six to 12 months after you give birth.

By the way, not all women notice dramatic changes in their hair during pregnancy or the postpartum period. Among those who do, it tends to be more obvious among women with longer locks.

Hair Phoenix - Thanks!! I didnt experience a growth spurt during pregnancy, #1 my Dr's never perscribed me any PreNatals - i was on Regular Multivitamins my whole pregnancy and I just had normal hair growth, I got about a half inch trimmed while I was pregnant as well. So I didnt think that I would experience any shedding..BOY was I wrong

Chanteuse - Mose white women I know endured shedding as well, I think its more of a hormone thing than anything else...

Thanks for all your advice, I will just keep conditioning it taking care of it normally, the dr said that its just gonna shed cuz that just how it is sometimes..she shed after she had her daughter as well, so I calmed down a little,

Im just used to having this resiliant, thick, hair that doesnt show signs of distress Lets not even talk about how I think my hair has lost some of its strength and right before I had my son, I think I caused a big breakage on my left temple from wrapping my hair too tight

I can't tell you what to do to stop, but I suggest weaving or braiding your hair so you don't notice how much you're losing. It would also be a good regimen to grow your hair back in. My sister did this and it worked well. Good luck!!

Ok, chiming in. I'm currently relaxed but was natural when I gave birth to my daughter 2 years ago. At promptly 3 months, I stepped into the shower to wash my hair and stepped out to find a completely bald and receding hairline. So it has nothing to do with relaxer, it's hormones and I wish I could tell you something that will make it grow back faster. For me,it took 6 months to a year for my hair to be somewhat normal again. With Dr. Miracles and Doo Gro, it took about 3 months for my hairline to fill in completely. Plenty of hugs your way because I know excatly what you are going through. For those who have not experience postpartem shedding, count your blessings!

Don't worry, it will stop. When your pregnant it's like somone pushed the "on" button for growth and then after you have the baby things go back to the way they were. I had massive tangling because all the loose hairs were getting caught so I did a rollerset to ease them out and ended up with a golf ball sized hair ball.
