after posting about deep conditioning problems and reading some of the addvice, I clarified the other day to remove any product build-up that may be interfering with the conditioning properties. My hair has still been feeling dry/tangly over the last few weeks, it must be the no-lye relaxer, i've done everything right. I'm also getting a lot of breakage when i comb my hair wet, must be the texturised ends causing trouble, i'll try another protein treatment. I may transition for good, because chemicals are pure drama.... i just concerned about handling thick hair again.

Could you be manipulating your hair too much? When I was relaxed, at night I would moisturize from root to tip, comb through gently, make a loose braid and put on my satin scarf. In the morning I applied a little moisturizer to the ends and just stuck it in a ponytail...no combing. I washed and deep conditioned every week with creme of nature shampoo and Queen Helene's cholesterol. I only combed after the towel had soaked up most of the water and I combed just enough to get out the huge knots. After I blowdried my hair on warm, I slathered on moisturizer comb through gently and went back to the braid. My relaxed hair was great till I moved to the "land of bad water" (boston)

manipulation could be a possible cause of breakage, i think i better put my denman away then. i can't explain why my hair is incredibly dry/tangly when wet, as soon as i pass the comb down through the last few inches i lose hair, this is where my ywo textures meet relaxed/texturized, should i cut all all my old lye ends, it would mean losing at least 4 inches in length though.

Have you tried an Aphogee treatment?
no i haven't done one yet, i used henna treatment 5 weeks ago and i did GPB last week, I'm thinking its got serious now so at my next wash i will do a hardcore treatment with Aphogee.

If you recently relaxed, I would suggest doing the treatment. Since you're new to relaxers again :) , this may help with some of the breakage that you just can't prevent with all of your other TLC, ya know. this thread may help you get some feedback on how you want to go about the process. http://www.longhaircareforum.com/showthread.php?t=86151&highlight=MizaniMami HTH

Maybe you should start cutting...just an inch at a time if you don't want lose so much in one shot (I understand that completely).

Thanks for the link, i've used aphogee with good results for many years, so i think i should go back to this treatment.

taking the ends of one inch at a time is the best thing, it would set my back too much if i hacked off all my ends in one go, i would end up with neck-length hair lol

Hey den
sorry to hear about thr problems you are having with your hair.
My hair has been fairly dry lately but i did a deep condition with profectiv anti breakage and my hair was sooo soft and straight it was crazy but good. i had washed my hair with inno via protein poo and then applied it conditioner before that.
Have you tried applying conditioner to dry hair just regular conditioner on dry hair leave it with a cap on then rinse and c/o wash again?
Thats helped me in the past but has only been short term relief..i have to agree with you on it being caused by the no-lye relaxer...even though i used phyto this time my hair my hair isnt as dry as when ive previously used no-lye.

let us know how you get on chick

Have you read "Beautiful Black Hair" by Shamboosie? He talks bout No Lye Relaxers not being good for the hair cause it causes the hair to become extremely dry. He says not to use a protein treatment for the breakage if the hair is dry, although the treatment stops breakage, but if the hair is already dry it will only cause it to be dryer and this will cause more damage. He says to use a conditioning lye relaxer for your next retouch. He also talks bout Nexxus Humectress moisturizing conditioner.I got the book from the library, but if you can't get it, I have the book and if you need more info I don't mind looking up that info and printing it out for you no matter how many pages, cause you have really helped me. So let me know. I gotta hurry and send this cause I keep getting knocked off.

Yes, i always apply my pre-poo conditioners/oils on dry hair and allow it to penetrate, i think another problem could be the lye ends, my hair wasn't this dry after washing before. my sister made a remark the other day saying" hoe comes your ends are so frizzy and dry looking" this really does confirm that the lye ends need to go.

no i haven't read that book, sounds interesting the reason why i switched to no-lye because the lye relaxer made my hair underprocessed and dry. could you please get some more info for me? thanks for your help.

My hair just came out of a weave a few weeks ago so it's been breaking more than usual while it was wet. It was the deep conditioners I was using and this was even after and aprogee treatment. I had to go back to using the old faithful conditioner, Le Keir Cholesterol and ORS hair pack. It did wonders for my hair. And I did a hot-oil pre-poo treatment. Once I shampooed and did all of this, my hair went back to normal. And I think I use no-lye too (mizani senstive).

I never had success w/ no lye when I was relaxed. :ohwell: I'm sorry to hear about your trouble. What if u braided it up for a bit to rest your hair? It would be a shame to have to BC again.

Yeah, i'm planning to put braids in around june, but i need to strengthen my hair first, if things don't work out i'll have to transition for good this time.

On my next wash i will try this method and see what happens.

thanks for your help ladies

I switched from a no-lye to a lye relaxer and my hair is doing much better. It feels softer and moisturized when it is finished. And remains that way (with help also from me taking better care of my hair in general :D ). When I had a no-lye relaxer my hair was ok when it was done but by the next day it was dry crispy mess. My ends are still jacked. I cant wait until my hair grows out so I can cut it all off. I also read Shamboosie's book and thats what convinced me to switch to lye. I would only reccomend the book if you are new to hair care though because most of the information you can find right on this board. But in my experiences no lye = extra dry. And I agree with the holding off on the protein if your hair is already dry and breaking. Deep conditioning with a moisturizing conditioner 2X a week whipped my hair back into shape. Then I added the protien after 6 weeks.

As you know, I just got a virgin relaxer in March. Even b/f getting my stylist let me know that from that one application my hair would not be perfectly straight. (not bone straight though--she doesn't do those)

She said she was just going to leave it on the right amount of time and not try and force my natural hair through anything. Then, at my next touch up---towards the end she would put some on those ends and work it through. Again--she said she did not want to put too much stress and probably by my next touch up--all will be good.

So after my initial relaxer---my ends still had 'texture' and I also noticed breakage when combing there. So I would say little manipulation. Just like if you were natural you wouldn't comb from root to tip---don't do it w/ your 2 textures.

Just keep DCing, moisturizing and leaving your hair alone.

I'm sure you'll figure it out soon!

Good luck Den, wish I had some good advice but I don't. Many of us cannot handle chemicals on our hair no matter what. If it does come to transitioning for good, don't sweat it, it'll work out. If you do go natural again maybe you should keep it shorter this time, maybe a little past shoulder-length, maybe that will help make it more manageable for you. No matter what, your hair is always beautiful.

Don't worry Den. There's plenty of women with lovely hair on this forum that use no-lye. Your hair may have to get used to the new regimen. I wouldn't cut it though. Your hair is beautiful. Moisture some more and less manipulation. Train that hair girl. You were transitioning for along time and now your relaxed. But you can do it. Keep growing girl!

I have that book. Nice read, but I don't like a lot of the things he is saying in that book. He seems to be pushing some brands a little too hard like he got paid off or something. Like saying that Humectress is the only conditioner that will works and that he has tried everything else. :ohwell: I don't know about that.

My lye ends feel the worst though, the no-lye hair at the top is smooth and silky, i feel that the texturized ends really need to go before my hair feels better and stops snapping at the demarcation, i'll just leave my hair in a baggie and only take it down for conditionings and protein treats.

Thanks for your advice, i'll stop taking my hair down too often to prevent breakage of the two textures.

Thanks for your kindness and consideration hopeful, i think if i ever found that my hair cannot cope with chemicals i would give it up. if i went completely natural, i would keep my hair shorter like you said.

Thanks for your support, sometimes i get so tired of trying so hard with my hair, so i'll take your advice and keep it moisturised and up out of sight and of reach lol.

Yes i think that would probably be best for you. If the no-lye is working well with your hair then stick with it unless you want to go natural. But whatever it is I'm SURE it will all work out with all of the useful advice from the knowledgable and experienced ladies on this board. Low manipulation TLC and patience.

:D I feel you on your frustration. MY hair was crunchy at one point when I had my relaxer... I think I put waaaay too much protein in it. I was doing protein treatments like once a week...(ignorantly). Now that I'm on the road to transitioning, IMO going natural is the best option.

Hey Den! Sorry you're experiencing drama, I kinda have the same issues as you. I took your advice that you gave me before, I've been baggy-ing my hair for days on ends, I did so for 3 days straight, I co-washed and now my hair is back on track. I'll be doing a deep treatment on the weekend and then next week I'll do an Aphogee treatment. I hope things work out for you.
