My edges are thinning (crying) What should I do?

Ok. I put my fro in a headband today...fluffed it out with my huge pick and walked out the door with my head high :yep:. I go to my parents house so my mother can line me up. She does, and says to go look in the mirror to see if it looks alright. Well, Im looking at the back of my head and I almost screamed. :cry2:It looks like someone pulled the hair out from the middle of my nape!! (is that the word) No, she didn't slip with the clippers. It also looks like my edges are thinning in the front.

I don't wear weaves, sew in, wigs, extention braids (not since Oct and they were only in for 2 weeks).

I co-wash 2x week (vo5). I use care free curl gold, hollywood olive cream all since oct/nov 2007 and just started using glycerin. And Im still using my MN misture (since Dec 07)--and I take breaks.

I did notice that that section of my head had been itching, but I didn't think anything of it. That/those parts are only noticable when my hair is pulled back.

Any suggestions?

I know how you feel. My edges were MIA not too long ago, however, u are currently using everything that I was going to suggest.

Have you been stressed lately?

MN, scurl and transitioning have really improved my edges.

:bighug:

I would use a growth aid in those places....Like Yodie suggested....MN or Boundless Tresses(I think I spelled that right)...

In the mean time chill with the twisties in the front and the ponies in the front....Try not to put tension in those areas.......

My hairline is my problem area too. I'm keeping it moisturized day and night and applying 100% aloe vera gel and JBCO to it twice a day, I've been doing this for a few months now I see a lil fuzz starting to feel in but nothing to write home about, said I was going to keep it up for 6mos and see what happens, but thinking about trying BT next.

I am suffering from the same exact problem. I lost of lot of hair in the back thanks to the claw clip I used to pull my hair back. Claw clips for fine hair is the death. I had to cut it in a graduated bob which fouled up my progress to shoulder length hair and I finally grew most of the hair in the back but that one nape spot is slow to grow. I had my stylist relax the nape dead last and switched to Affirm Mild because Motions caused my scalp to burn no matter how I did not scratch. I started back on Jamaican Black Castor Oil which is very moisturizing. I had to start on Boundless Tresses as a growth aid. However I cracked my thinning down to health reasons. First, I have thyroid disease(hyperdthyroid to hypothyroid) which will thin your hair and secondly I found out I am vitamin D deficient which will also mess with the hair as well. My thyroid labs are better and I had followed by a specialist. The Vit D deficiency is easily treated with supplements and sun exposure(I am fair skinned). I revamped my hair regimen again and started on a new growth aid: Nioxin Follicle Stimulator, it is a serum that contains no sulfur, is expensive but is successful at growing the hair back. I am now stretching my relaxers to every 8 weeks and hopefully will reach 10 weeks. I cut out wet setting on roller and wet wrapping and started air drying with CHI silk infusions to help dry my straight and then use steam rollers and dry wrap. I will start back on Aveda DR which really helped control breakage. Plus I started using natural oils like the ones that Sweet Cashew is selling which are great for pre poo, scalp massage and lubrication. I hope this helps.

You mentioned that those sections had been "itching". Did you scratch that area? Scratching with nails could have caused some of the damage. I'd use an oil and massage those area's nightly - treat those sections of hair like silk and they should come back.

Im not stressing. I've been extremely relaxed.

Im using MN right now. Yeah, i'll cut out the twisties ect.

Sulfur 8 every day if you can stand it. I apply everynight and co wash in the morning.

I have sulfur 8 in my MN mix.

I may have been scratching to hard. What oils are you using?

A couple of you have mentioned JBCO is that better then regular Castor Oil?

the same thing happened to me (middle nape was practically bald ) but i finally figured out the cause or so i think....
do u tie a scarf, cutoff pantyhose or headband with knot in the back? if u do..that might be the cause of the middle nape hair breakage....stop ASAP if u do and keep using the growth aids...i have not completely recovered but i see a lil progress...i used BT on that area and moisturise with scurl until it grew out some...now what i do is use Mooks method..well b4 she came up with it....of cornrowing the nape area horizontally and drenching it with scurl after i apply JBCO or BT...twice a day! HTH

here are my pics...Disclaimer...that scarf with knot is a NO_NO i just did it to take the pics...best believe it came off with the QUICKNESS!:lachen:

Awww...don't cry. :bighug:I'm sorry you're experiencing thinning. Do you tie your hair down with a scarf (maybe too tightly) and (repeatedly) place the knot in that area of your nape?

Don't cry babygurl.:nono: Get you some temple stimulating creme by those Organic or Mayo folks. It worked for me a few years ago when I was stressing due to my moms cancer.

My mother asked me that lastnight...about the scarf. My scarf is 30" x 30". Is so big, I can't tie it in the back. I criss cross it around the back and tie it in the front. I've been wearing it like that for YEARS.

Do you wear that flat twist style in your siggy a lot? I noticed when I was wearing a similar flat twist style, I was just plain putting too MUCH stress on my hairline as I was twisting it - and I couldn't figure out a way to twist it 'looser' without ending up with a flatpuff, rather than a flat twist.

And since my hairline hairs are much finer (MUCH finer) than the rest of my hair, it REALLY wasn't appreciating that amount of stress.

As for the back of your neck - do you wear collared shirts/turtlenecks/necklaces often?

No, this past few weeks i've been trying out styles. They would only stay in for 1 - 2 days. I only wear collared shirts once in a blue moon. And i don't wear the other two.

Im serious guys, I don't know what the heck is going on. It seems like all the answers to your questions are NO.

I really appreciate all your help in trying to figure my problem out. I've never had this problem before in my life so im wondering why its happening. It may just be one of those things.

Keep the suggestions comming. All the suggestions mentioned are valuable.

I asked my mother if she noticed this the last time she lined me up. She said "a little but not like this". And that was probably early last month. Hmmm, I haven't changed anything.

I shouldn't have put "crying" in the title. I was just upset while writting this lastnight. Im not trying to be dramatic. Sorry if I came across that way. But at least im not alone in my "loss" lol

Hrmmmmmmmm..... interesting.

I'd suspect either something internal, or something you are putting on your scalp around your hairline..... hey, you haven't changed facial soap/body soap recently, have you?

Sorry to hear you're going through this. But forgive me if this has been mentioned already. But is it possible that when you crisscross in the back of your headwrap it winds up being in the same spot? For example you may crisscross it like a lil past your nape area, but then as it sits on your head, it tends to start drawing itself(the strings that is) up some throughout the night possibly? Some people have like a lil indentation right where the back of the head meets the nape area, and sometimes the strings will tend to fall in the crack of that. IDK, it's just a possibility to check out maybe. Not sure what to say about your edges though, but hopefully you'll be able to figure it out soon. In the meantime, here's a :bighug: for ya!

Nope, I haven't changed...Wait a minute. I did start using the V05 Herbal Escapes Pomegranate and grapeseed extract conditioner, and Proclaim Cholesterol conditioner (i've used this in the past). I wonder if either may be the cause.

I've only worn elastic headbands.

Not "headwrap" I meant your blue scarf you use when you're crisscrossing it in the back and tying it up in the front, does the crisscross portion tend to sit right there on the nape area at all?

About the nape part. i thought it was just something natural. After loking atfotkis i began to think i was balding but someone cleared it up for me.

i never had a problem with the "back hair". its always the longest and healthiest. and just like hairlines up front(widows peak, straight, indented temples, lots of NATURAL babyhair) the back can vary as well(upsidedown U,updisedown W, straight across, baby hair down the neck) but if there was thick hair there before and none now this dosent apply.

Sorry . Yes, but i've been wearing it like that for years....years. So im wondering why it would start acting up now:perplexed. Hmm. How else could I wear it?

Well see, the reason I ask that about the crisscross portion was because back in my relaxer days, I would put a do-rag on and tie it the same way as you do. It later started thinning in that nape area for me(not too bad since I caught it in time) until I figured it out on the crisscrossing part. So what I did was bunch that part that hangs in the back and take the left string and wrap around one side end of the back portion like a bantu knot and do the same to the right side as well, the bantu knots would then sit on the skin(behind and below my ear) and not on my hair. This stopped the thinning in that area for me. I don't wear do-rags at all now. But, I'm not sure if your scarf has that hang bit in the back like do-rags do, but I do that to any scarf (square or rectangle shaped) I wear nowadays so that nothing at all is sitting anywhere on my hair. Another thing that I do, you can also use a satin/silk bonnet with the thick headband on it like approx 2inches wide, and put that on, but making sure to put it past your hair line and not on your hair also. I alternate with these 2 methods being that I lose my scarfs/bonnets so much so that I have like a million of them here LOL:lachen:so whichever I find at the moment, that's what I use.
