I posted this in one of the challenges I'm in, but I figured it would not necessarily reach all the people that could advise me so, I decided to just stick it in a thread of it's own.

Please share any recipes, tips/things to watch out for/advice etc.

These are the recipes I would like to try for my DIY products. I would appreciate any pointers, ingredients that may help to make them last longer or general thoughts on the ingredient combinations. TIA

Moisture spritz
Distilled water, aloe vera juice, grapeseed oil, glycerin and Vitamin e oil

Scalp spritz
Rosemary, mint and cloves steeped in boiled distilled water.

Detangler spritz
Distilled water boiled with marshmallow root and slippery elm powders - boiled and drained, glycerin and avocado oil

Scalp oil
Sunflower oil infused with Mint, cloves, rosemary and a couple of drops of Vitamin e oil

Hair gel
Flaxseeds boiled with marshmallow root and slippery elm and glycerin

"Moisture spritz

Try using Aloe Vera Gel for a moisture boost. I'm thinking you can substitute the distilled water and aloe vera juice with just aloe vera gel in this mixture.

Sometimes I add essential oils to the Gel. Especially if I'm using it on my scalp. I love the way Red Grapefruit makes my hair smell; you can use it by itself to mask smokey smells (lesson learn after clubbing)

Thank you :)

ETA:

Would the aloe vera gel make the consistency of the spritz thicker?

I bought the juice instead of the gel because I thought the gel might make the spritz thicker. I don't currently have aloe vera gel, but it's on my to get list.

The gel is thicker than a Spritz butbis easily diluted. I'd add the ingredients to the pump bottle, shake it up real good, and the pump. I just found using the gel more favorable than water.

I was looking for a watery spritz for when I my braids go in on Friday, something I could use multiple times throughout the day as it will likely be hot where I'm going.

The aloe vera gel sounds like it would work well for when I don't have braids in my hair. I will definitely try it out at some point. Thanks again :)

We buy that by the gallon. It's worth the money.
My two best options at a glance are these:

The only ingredients in the first one are aloe vera gel and vegetable glycerin.

Then there's this one....

They haven't listed the ingredients, but they do state this:

I suppose the second would be the way to go as you get so much more for a similar amount of money and it seems to not have additives in it.

I have just made my first couple of batches of hair oil

The first one, which I want to infuse over about 4 weeks, contains rosemary, cloves, and mint. The main carrier oils are avocado, and sunflower oil with a couple of tablespoons of grapeseed and vitamin e oils. It's the biggest of the two batches at around 330ml

The second one is the same, except for no mint and it's a smaller jar. This one, I intend to start using as soon as I get back from Turkey. So that should be in 2 weeks time.

Tomorrow I'm planning to make a moisturising spritz for my braided hair and possibly a scalp spritz too.

I'm starting to feel very excited

@Angel of the North You inspired me to finally make a hair tea after all this time lol. It's real simple too (cause my stuff was starting to go bad lol) I put the excess into two 16oz empty water bottles (I accidently got oil in one them. Imma kiss it up to God and make it work like the kids used to do when we were younger :lachen:)and put those in the freezer, and glory to God I found a spray bottle in my stash. It's 1 oz, and I keep it in the fridge and at the end of the week, if its any left I'll dispose of it and thaw out some for the next week.

I love that you can freeze them. Can you freeze the mixes that contain oil, or only the ones without?

I'm thinking if I make the base with just the powders, I could freeze them and then add the oils once defrosted.

Now that, I do not know lol. However what I learned is if you add an emulsifier to your mix, it will stop the oil and water from separating.

This video is for lotion but the principle is the same for hair stuff. This is just a video that came to the top of my head:

So I had to get this vid while signed into my account so that I could save it. I then searched for how to preserve homemade hair products...... You gonna be here, I'm gonna be on the tube, watching 101 product preservation videos

I found lots of them, I've decided to watch through the ones I felt looked relevant before I make the hair and scalp spritzes.

I have a question for those that make hair products that require straining..... Does or has anyone used coffee percolator sheets/cones to strain products?

ETA: Do oils strain easily through cheesecloth?

While I was going through the YouTube videos, and over the week when I've watched tutorials on how to make flaxseed gel, I noticed that there were different consistencies of the gel textures. Some looked really thick, some looked quite runny.

My questions are:

Which consistency do you prefer and why?

How long do you boil your flaxseeds for?

Does thicker gel = flakey?

If you have tried different consistencies, do you think you get better definition/hold with thicker gel or does it not really make a difference?

Not sure if it was for an oil mix, but I think @Chicoro has used coffee sheets. Or maybe I’m thinking of the lovely new coffee strainer she recently switched to. Sort of like a ‘micro’ strainer. I’ve used cheesecloth to strain hydrated fenugreek mixes. I’d be mindful of the oil getting soaked up in the cheesecloth, although in theory it should be easy enough to squeeze out a lot of the excess that does get absorbed.

YES, I have a metal strainer with a cheese cloth type cloth attached to it. Sort of like a ‘micro’ strainer. I’ve used cheesecloth to strain hydrated fenugreek mixes. @GGsKin and @Angel of the North
I've used them. They take forever to strain through and they soak up a lot of your precious oil into the paper.

@Chicoro thank you that's, really helpful. I definitely don't want to waste any of my oils, so will not be bothering with coffee filters. They came to mind because they are easy to get a hold of, I don't even drink coffee

I've just looked up a few strainers, it makes sense to have reusable tools, are any of these what you use? I really like the look of the first two pics.

Thank you, I did wonder about oil being soaked up too. I would also prefer the process to be as clean ad possible, oil can get real messy real quick.

I have the first one. It works great!

That's the one I want to get, I like that it's has both the mesh and the metal colander strainers, and also that it's all dishwasher proof. I also think the mesh strainer will work very well for straining steeped powders.

I will get some cheesecloth as a back up or in case I need it for a bigger batch of gel or something.

After some research I've decided that I will make this moisture spritz:

2/3 distilled water
1/3 aloe vera juice
1 tablespoon of grapeseed oil
1 teaspoon of vegetable glycerin
A few drops of vitamin e oil

I only need it to last for a week and there's a mini bar in the hotel room so I can keep if refrigerated.

I've just noticed that the aloe juice once opened, will only last for 2-3 weeks in the refrigerator. It is possible to freeze for upto 6 months.

I have a litre of the juice. I'm thinking of making a larger batch of scalp sprays and hair spritzes, and freezing them when I get back, as I said before, I can add any oils once defrosted.

I also need to look a little closer at preservatives. Some of the ones available in the USA are banned in the UK and EU, many of the videos have been done by people who reside in the States.

I'm also thinking that I could use this moisture mix as the L in my LCO, or just to refresh moisture. I'm really hoping all of these recipes I will be trying will work for me.
