Mixologists...... I need your help/advice

While I was going through the YouTube videos, and over the week when I've watched tutorials on how to make flaxseed gel, I noticed that there were different consistencies of the gel textures. Some looked really thick, some looked quite runny.

My questions are:

Which consistency do you prefer and why?

How long do you boil your flaxseeds for?

Does thicker gel = flakey?

If you have tried different consistencies, do you think you get better definition/hold with thicker gel or does it not really make a difference?

IMHO it is a personal preference. My fine hair works well with thinner gel products that are less thick than Ecogel (as an example). But if you have high density, 4C hair, you might prefer a heavy hold gel.

I prefer lighter products on my hair too, which is also fine. My hair is like 3c at the front/top of my crown and then 4a from the middle to the back.

My problem is frizz! I'm hoping flaxseed gel might help me combat that. I've never used ecostyler, heavy gels makes my hair hard and crunchy. I know they have a wide variety, but everyone I know who used it were coming like they were wearing a hard hat, although they were not necessarily wearing WAG, it just put me off from trying it.

I will probably have to try different consistencies to find what will work for me, I'll probably start with a thinner batch, if anything, I should be able to take some out to try and continue boiling to get it thicker if necessary.

I'm late to this discussion. Sorry.

Cheesecloth is more than fine I if you're using the product on your own head. just make sure that it's clean before you start. Yes, the oils get soaked in, but they're easy enough to squeeze out.

I have a reusable coffee strainer and I've got different types of cheesecloth (I posted two kinds below, but you can find the mesh sizes in between the two that I showed below). The fine mesh is good for oils and liquids, but not so much for straining ayurvedic herbs for masks, if you're ever inclined to use it for that.

My suggestion for supplies, particularly the aloe vera gel (and any of the oils) is to find a soap maker supplier near you. The stuff should be cheaper and maybe even better quality than amazon.

I mainly use Liquid Germall Plus II to preserve my lotions. I've not had success in using it in herbal tea sprays.

Thank you ❤️ I went with this funnel strainer

I will also get some spare mesh trainers.

I get all ingredients from the type of store you recommended, over here they trade on multiple platforms including their own websites, so I feel confident about the quality of what I'm buying.

Thank you so much for the preservative recommendation, I just have to check if it's one of the ones available over here. I've been reading and watching so much, I think my brain is overloaded

I have decided that I'm not going to make my own shampoo and conditioners, I can always enhance the ones I like whith oils and/or powders.

I need that funnel/strainer combo in my life.

I've not tried making shampoos yet, but leave in conditioners are where it's at. And it's the exact same process as body lotion. I'm going to quietly encourage you to try your hand at both.

I definitely want to make the moisture spritz, detangler, hair creams and gels. I also hope some of that can double up as leave ins too.

On a side: I just gave my oil infusions a shake

The hair creams can for sure. And the best part is that you'll land on a formula that is better for your hair than anything you'll find in the store.
That's exactly what I'm hoping for! I know the ingredients that my hair likes, I just need to get the right consistencies and measurements. I'm looking so forward to getting started.

The main reason I'm taking so long is because I have a lot of stuff so I want to use some up before getting creative. I'm starting with the moisture spritz, scalp spray and ioil infusions.

I intend to move on to the detanglers and the gels, and then finally my hair creams. I've seen recipes for hair creams that have flaxseed in them too. I really like the sound of that. I imagine that would be a one and done product.
