Mixing Your Own Daily Moisturizer

Who here mixes their own stuff? I have tons of oils that are wasting so I read through some ingredient lists of some of my favorite products. Most have water as the first ingredient, so I mixed my stuff and added water and aloe vera gel. Now we all know water and oil don't mix so my question here is who knows how they mix theirs without that water/oil separation? Thanks. On the plus side the mix I did turned out GREAT. My hair is very soft and shiny so I'll keep at it till I'm 100% satisfied (if there is such a thing...lol).

I sometimes mix my oils in my leave-in conditioner or dilute it in distilled water. I just shake well before spraying and it works wonderfully

I was hoping to create a butter/creamy type product...something that didn't need spraying...hm.

My mix consisted of:
olive oil
castor oil
coconut oil
almond oil
aloe vera gel
water
lavender drops
shea butter
lanolin
glycerine

Anybody have any ideas what I could add to get it creamy (something natural)?

Have you tried to whip the shea butter? It will/should cream.

Hmm, sounds like a good idea. How would I go about whipping it? The shea butter I have is on eof the old school ones from Ghana.

I whip with a hand blender, like what you'd use for cake batter. Are you trying to make a moisturizing oil (one w/more water) or a sealing type oil?

FYI: If you going to use water, you need a some type of preservative/anti-fungus bacterial solvent if you plan to make a large batch and keep it for a while.

You need an emulsifier to keep the oil and water from separating. A couple that I can think of off the top of my head: lecithin, beeswax, vegetable emulsifying wax, stearic acid. I'm sure there are others you can use. Maybe someone else will chime in.

Ah, thanks ladies :)

I'm trying to make something with the QB sidr balm kind of consistency. Not a spray but not a thick butter. Not a sealing oil..for that I would just use my kemi oyl. I don't think I will make large batches so I'll skip on the anti bacterial thing but that's good to know for the future.

An emulsifier...aha...I saw that in the ingredients list but didn't know what was considered an emulsifier. I thought it would be something I wouldn't be able to get my hands on. As it happens I have lecithin...whoohoo..let me go add that and see. Thanks :)

My summer moisturizer ingredients was almost identical to your mix, the other products I added were real honey and honey/almond conditioner....I never had a problem with it separating and it was the same consistency as the sidr tree butter balm....HTH

WHOOHOO it worked. It's a lotion type consistency. Not like the sidr balm I was aiming for but this is better...I love it. My hair is soft and shiny. It goes on a bit greasy but dries soft and non-greasy.
EMJazzy, I ended up adding some natural honey to it as well. I saw it in my stash and thought what the hey.
Keluric, where could I get un-petrolatum?
I'm very pleased with myself...lol :)

Be careful with the lecithin, to me it has a very strong odor. I'm also trying to make my own hair moisturizer, something with a consistency between Sidr Balm and the Heavy Cream using light, non-greasy but extremely moisturizing oils and butters. Let us know how it turns out.

ETA: I just saw your post about how it turned out.

Honey can also be used as an emulsifier.

WAY TO GO FAITH!!! :yay: :yay:

Thanks :)

The lecithin is a bit smelly but being the occasional WTG user it's not so bad... :look:. It's funny, I find the shea butter smellier.... Anywho, the lavendar helps mask it all very well...it smells nice.
I think I'll get some cocoa butter and add a bit more water, tomorrow.
I'm on a roll..lol.

Thanks again everybody :)

Well, today I added some pure cocoa butter. Who knew it was sooooo hard? I didn't. And some more water, aloe vera gel and some avocado oil...this oil is GREAT. Expensive but very moisturizing.

I love my lotion...my hair is very soft and shiny. It's softer than with QB's sidr and amla.
Only negative is I cannot stop touching my hair...eeeek.

Hey Faith, I make my own moisturising spray that I use both AM and PM. My hair stays moist and I can not believe how my hair is growing. I was using some of the homemade concoctions that others suggested, but I decided to make my own because the others that I used either made my hair too dry, or they weighed my hair down with so much buildup. This one I made seems to work very nicely.

You may want to check out Irresistible's album. I remember she had a cocoa butter and shea butter mixture that she said made her hair soft and moisturised.
