Mixing Shampoo with Hair Color

Has anyone used Permanent Color and mixed shampoo with it to dilute it and not make it so harsh? Clairol recommended this to my cousin as a color correction. If so, how soon did you use it following the last permanent color application?

I read in one thread that this lady took some of her rinse and added it to her conditioner to stretch the amount of times she has to do color touch ups.
