Hi ladies:) . I have been around for some months now and I recently got a new roommate. We are both Marines and we share our hair woes with each other.

My roomie is hispanic and has long, mid-back to waist length hair. It is really pretty. Her only problem is, for work she has to pull it back into a bun and there can be no fly-away/stray hairs.

After months and months of pulling it back daily, she is now developing a small thinning spot:eek: right behind the hairline in the front of her head. It's barely noticable, but she doesn't want it to get bigger of course.

Help a sista out please! What can I tell her to do to stop the thinning, but still allow her to maintain the neatest possible look?

I know Military life is strict but does it have to be a bun. Can she do alternative styles that are neat like a neat but a little looser braid?

HI,

I'm ex-Army, so I know what you mean. The first thing I thought of when I read your post is that she has traction alopecia from pulling her hair back too tightly, AND maybe from having headgear that is too tight.

Of course, she needs to find an alternate style- one that won't pull on her hair as much. (I have to be honest, though, and say that having hair that long while you are in the Armed Forces is probably not a good idea. It can be a detriment to your safety. I cut mine to a more managable length when I was in.)

She should get some Rogain for Women and start applying it daily to the bald area. She should also look into getting a larger size hat. If you can't stick a finger in between the hat and your head, it's too tight.

She might also want to look into getting layers put in so that the hair is less bulky.

I went through this both as an Army MP and as a police officer. It was just too much work to get it to stay neat and not have it be a safety issue (ie turning the hair into a "handle" for someone, get it?). So it got cut. Plus, it was much cooler that way!

Good luck and HHG!

Semper Fi, girl. I am a Military Brat, Army Soldier and now a Marine Wife for 8 years.
During my time serving, I use to bun, french braid and pin up, also I would get corn rows put into a bun. I would say she is buning to tight, to keep the fly aways tame, she should try some Aloe Vera with Elasta QP Mango Butter Mix and then smooth her hair back, but not too tight.

Thanks ladies. I will share these tips with her.

I told her to stop pulling her hair too tight and I know her hats are not too tight on her. She doesn't want to cut it and it's not really a saftey issue for her right now because she does desk work all day. I'll see what she says about the Rogain.

OOH-RAH neon! I think she will like the aloe vera w/ mango butter idea. I finally got here out of those alcohol gels but she insists on using gel almost every day (at least she washes daily).

Thanks again!!
