Military babes support group!

For real! Because I really want to try that stuff out. I was getting ready to order it but I just get tired of ordering things. The PX needs to step up their game. What do I have to do to get it on the shelves? ORS Paks would be nice too. I'd be set if they would get these things.

thegirltolove~I am so glad you posted that. I want to order some motions stuff and I try to order at amazon but they have everything at all these different stores so you have to pay shipping for everywhere and that gets expensive. I gotta hit that store up.

I was also told from a lurker here:look:....that if they send you an email telling you that you'll need to pay extra shipping that you can reply and let them know that it is still considered part of the continental united states, so there should be no additional charges.:yep:

I don't know how many military/prior enlisted ladies we have but I am thinking if we have enough then we can start a support thread. If you are active enlisted or recently discharged then join this thread. Lets get your stats, the standards: hair type, processed or natural, hair goal, hair problems.

Also I'd like to know if you are active or not, have you reached your goal, what things have you done to counter your problems and if you are deployed or home station.

Me I am active duty Air Force currently deployed to the sand box.

My hair type is 4b(afro, kinky) processed at neck length.
My goal: apl-bsl
Hair issues: breakage.

So far my hair is doing better but the dry air, exercise sweat, previous over processing (stupid hair dresser acting like the perm needed to stay in forever) has taked a toll. I am fighting the breakage with moisture but I worry whether pulling my hair back constatly is hurting me?

Ya'll know us military ladies have extra special needs and concerns,

I did 5 years in AF @ WHMC 1996 - 2001.
Been natural since 1999.
Current goal arm pit, long term goal hip bone.
I have extreamly dry ends 4a coils and S's

Nice to have met you.

I am prior service, so I feel you on the ponytails. It seemed like I could never stay past shoulder-length for very long because I would have damage from the ponytails and end up cutting it off. I went natural and I even started my locks while I was in, and I caught hell for it.
I am 4a natural and my issues are dry scalp and hair. My goal length is waist-length.

what did they do to you about your locks?

taking care of your high while in boot camp is HIGHLY limited. i would recommend wearing cornrows or micros. i wore cornrows. i rinsed them in the shower everyday & when i got a chance, i would oil my scalp. we couldn't take any containers in the shower with us. we had to pour our poo/con in our hair & our body wash in our hand & walk in the shower like that. we couldn't even use wash cloths, just our hands. but showers, IF we got one, were only about 5 minutes long...

i'm still trying to forget those days...

well you had it harder than i did in basic.
did someone assult someone in the shower or something? we (3 2 3 HOUSE OF PAIN! 1996) had our cons, poos and liquid soap with us

I am a recently discharged Active Army chique. I totally neglected my hair during my 5 1/2 years so ummm yea I'm not realizing that I want it back healthy first of all and now i want to really take care of it and reap the benefits of longer, stronger hair.

hair type: 4a/3c, transitioning from relaxed to texlaxed
current length: somewhere midneck
goal:waist length-hip length
Hair issues: Keeping my ends from splitting and developing a regime and FOLLOWING IT!! Finding the time to do hair care.

Between 50 hour work weeks, two kids (8 and 1) and online college I'm a bit limited in my free time but I really am trying to work on it.

Welcome all military dimes.... as we journey to strong, long, and healthy hair while serving. I'm so proud of you all.

I was stationed in
  • South Korea (Camp Red Cloud)
  • Fort Lewis, Washington
  • Kuwait (Arifjahn, Camp Victory, Camp Pennsylvania, New York... all over Kuwait basically)
  • Iraq (LSA Anaconda, Balad Airfield, and Camp Pacemaker)
  • Afghanistan
  • and to Germany for a few hours (can I claim that?) :lachen:
I love this forum. It is very positive and encouraging. I'm hoping in 3 years I'm at my waistlength and can provide for others some inspiration and a regimen to help them out as well

When did you gfet out? while in Kuwait/Iraq did you know Tarbush?

I work at the PX now...
Can you ladies PLEASE send massive requests for PANTENE'S HAIR MASK...

Because I'm an RA and I have to order the stuff and it's blasphemy not having it!!! :ohwell:

I know!! I had to have my sister send it to me. I tried to order it and it has yet to ship and that was over a month ago!! Fortunately my PX just started getting ORS olive oil profectiv products the past couple weeks.:clapping:

Just wanted to THANK YOU for your service to our country LADIES!!!

I too am prior military, US Army, 83-90. I also have a daughter who is Army currently stationed in Vincencia, Italy who loves this site too. I made sure she loaded up on the ORS conditioner,Vatikia Oil and Dabur Amla oil before she left.

I have 4Z (Wink) texlaxed shoulder length hair. I do daily rinsing with Vatika oil and Dabur Amla oil, then put in bun. I wear a half wig while at work and have been able to maintain my ends very well. I also do monthly henna that has really strengthened my hair and covers the grey very well.

Wow, I've been on LHCF since last year and I just now found this thread!

I'm 4a/b, relaxed - shooting for strong, healthy and Mid-back. My hair problem is breakage and trying to find a protective style that looks professional and doesn't snap off my hair like this phony-pony thing does.

I'm active Army on Lackland AFB, hoping to hit shoulder length by September and so far jojoba oil has really helped me counter a lot of breakage.
Now if I can just get that beret to quit yankin my hair out!
The down side of applying protective oils to the hair in hot locations is when you wear your beret over the oils, it gets soaked up into the headband. Took me forever to figure out why I had a perfect line of acne running strait accross my forehead all the time.

I just got here in October and so far i'm loving it. I'm working with OSI, where are you stationed at now?.

Feel free to throw some of your favorite places out here my way. I'm still looking for a favorite restuarant, and a goold place to get my nails and other beauty needs done at.

i'm in germany now. are there still lhc peeps here?

What's up ladies... I'm AD Air Force have been delployed plenty of times. I hate wearing my hair pulled back, so I wear a lot of half wigs and wigs. It's getting hot here though so I may have to go back to pony tails or keeping it pinned up during the summer.

Hey ladies Active Duty AIT Drill Sergeant checkin in........I bun EVERYDAY!!!! It's a pain. Before I became a DS I used to wear cute weaved bobs, twist, and stuff, but being on the trail we have to look a certain way. Well, that's my story. Oh yeah how is Ft. Lee, I'm in the AF but I'm getting stationed there. How's the post and the area?

Thank you MissTical! Ft. Lee is not that bad, the post is kinda small and you have to go to Richmond (40mi) to do some real shopping and clubbing. I'm from NJ so I love it here, can go home at the drop of a dime. HTH feel free to PM if you want to talk more.

I had alotta fun at Ft. Lee. Matter fact my name is carved in the sidewalk there on the way to the px teehee:lol:

I've been trying to find this thread again... about to subscribe. Anywho I'm going to Ft Lee within the next few years... I need to go and check the area out before I PCS.

Hey ladies.

I'm prior service Air Force now serving with the National Guard. Trying to do the ROTC thing these days. I just hit 8 yrs in April and I figure I'll ride the full 20 out. Not sure if I wanna go active again but I don't want to wait until 60 to get my retirement.

HAIR STATS!
Hair Type: 3c/4a; Relaxed; SL
Hair Problem: Used to have problems with breakage and dryness but that came about because I heat-styled constantly.
Right now I'm fine. Cowashing fixed my moisture deficiency problems. I don't break anymore..I just have normal shedding.
Goal: Right now I'm trying to make sure that my hair strong and healthy
and split-end free. Just did a henna treatment and I love the results.
So...after this I'm going for length: BSL

>>sigh<<
Just got out of WTC (warrior Transition Course). I was given short notice and couldn't get micros. I don't know how the hell my hair made it through. But I kept it wrapped and my hair sustained minimal damage.

Other than that I'm chillin and going to school.

PS: I HATE the berets!!!! (no offense) I was told the Army always wore berets..? Whatver---someone PLEASE bring back the patrol caps!
I can't wear my hair the way I want to with this dayum beret...
All day long I'm 'petting' the beret! Petting my beret-covered head like a small animal...

Is there anyone else here that's experiencing shedding? It's taking it's toll on me, I've stretching and underprocessing, and vitamins. My hair is still shedding and is thin near in & around the crown.

From what I've read it's probably stress. How'da hell do I counter "stress" related shedding and keep my job?

What do ya'll do?

^^^^
I hear that garlic helps shedding.
Some in here use a 'garlic shampoo'.:ohwell:
Not sure where they get it from.

Personally--I'd just crush some cloves, dump it in my shampoo or condish and let it marinate all over my head.
But---that's just me.

I've never tried it but I anticipate using it because I shed like a sheepdog in the winter.

Then again--this could be a sign of an internal problem:
Have you changed your diet recently?
Did you switch up your regimen toinclude products you've never used before?
Have you been sleeping? Are you feeling stressed...?

I am an active military member in the Air Force. Stationed at Sheppard AFB in TX. Right now though I'm in Kuwait. I haven't been a member long but I can't even start my regimen until I get home (next week...YESSSS!!!):yay: They have none of the products I want to try in this BX (if you even want to call it that). :nono: I was always tryin to figure out why my hair wouldn't grow like some of the other females I knew. Then I joined this forum and I was doin all of the wrong things!!! :wallbash: Luckily I have learned the error of my ways. Hopefully by the end of next year I should reach my goal of BSL. *crossing my fingers*

I was shedding pretty badly; have you tried co-washing? This has helped tremendously.
I'll try Co-washing more often, so far I may accomplish this once a month.

I'm reluctant, but I'll try the garlic.Diet, stress and lack of sleep may be culprits. I'll do what I can to improve on these.

Welcome Home and Best of Luck to you with your hair goals. :grouphug:

Hi, I'm going into the Coast Guard active duty and I realized alot of people are wondering what hairstyle would be best for bootcamp. Since bootcamp is all about time management and most last for about two months, the best hairstyle to get would be a sew-in. Make sure your hair underneath is braided with a piece of yarn all the way through. The yarn helps the hair that's braided retain moisture underneath the sew-in. Don't have the hair tracks your sewing onto the braids be supper long. A bob cut that can be neatly pulled back would be fine. Then when you have that day or two of leave time in basic or graduation, you can take it out of the ponytail and wear it down underneath your cap. It's the perfect solution. Also, you can sleep on your hair if you're doo-rag or silk bonnet is taken from you without your natural hair being exposed to the damaging back and forth rubbing up against rough cotton sheets and pillows.

Make sure you pre-poo with olive oil, amla, or castor oil with heat for 15-30 minutes or put the oil on your head overnight with a plastic cap covering your head while you sleep. Shampoo with a moisturizing shampoo, and deep condition with heat with a moisturizing, not protein deep conditioner for 30 minutes. Rinse your hair then do your usual routine by putting in your leave-in conditioner and seal your hair with a light oil like the ones your pre-pooed with. Oil your scalp. (I like to use Jane Carter Solution "Nourish & Shine" or Chatto's "Omega Gold Shea Protein & Vitamin Scalp Conditioning Hairdress"... both are all natural by the way. You want to infuse your hair with as much moisture as possible since you won't have your usual hair oils, shampoo, and conditioner in bootcamp. Also, I don't recommend micros, but it's your preference. They are too stressful on the delicate edges of your hair and they are heavy as heck when you gather them into a ponytail which is also quite damaging. They also tend to keep the scalp and hair supper dry. I don't recommend cornrows because they become frizzy too fast, even with synthetic braid hair added to your own. Also, scalp and hair become dry and sometimes damaged because plastic hair and natural hair don't mix in the strain it puts on hair. If you can't afford a sew-in and must have cornrows braided with extention hair, please make sure its at least human hair. Do all the deep conditioning I recommended with all braided hairstyles whatever you decide. Your hair in bootcamp should be the least of your worries. Happy hair growing.

Oh by the way, Chatto's all natural hair products can be found online at www.chatto.com 1-800-709-1490.

Jane Carter Solution can be found at www.janecartersolution.com 1-877-424-7227.
I also like Salema Cartwright's produts found on HealthyHairJourney.com

Remember, sew-ins are only suppose to be kept in the hair for 2 to 2.5 possibly 3 months at the most, but no more. Pre-poo, Shampoo, and Deep Condition with heat as soon as you take the sew-in, micros, or cornrows down after bootcamp. Aftercare is VERY VERY important. Let your own hair rest for about 2 weeks before you do any type of braiding style or relaxer touch-up again in your hair.

^ Great, great great info! Military wives will benefit from this info too if they are stationed overseas with a spouse and don't have access to US products anymore. I wish I'd found this thread while we were in the UK....

I am active duty army stationed in Louisiana. I have been natural since March '09. My hair is very coilly, don't really know my hair type. I have issues with dryness and breakage/shedding. I have not found a product yet that cured my dryness. My goal is full APL hair, I am currently NL. This has been awesome information. I am subscribing so I can pass the info on to my sisters-in-arms.

I'm active duty Air Force stationed in okinawa, japan Kadena AB. I'm relaxed, finally SL and just started my healthy hair journey mid september. I haven't had too many issues since I've started my journey, but the breakage used to be TERRIBLE and I had dryness issues. Right now everything seems to be going well so hopefully I can keep it going. My goal is BSL.
