I'm so glad someone started this thread. Can someone please tell me what it like living in Michigan --- especially Detroit.

I'm thinking about going to grad school in Michigan (no idea where yet) and I just want some insight as to what it's like living there. I'm from California so I already know about the weather difference, but what else is there to know?

Im from a big city (Toronto Canada) and im in michigan for school.....the area that im in is EXTREMELY boring...BUT there is still alot to do in michigan...just move to a city that is always busy....and you should be fine.....

A WHOLE LOT....

Come for grad school ONLY if the program is the TOP in the respective field; you are on FULL SCHOLARSHIP, if you have RELIABLE TRANSPORTATION.... otherwise, you may not adjust well....

For the record, I can make Michigan look real good, too, but since you're from California, my niece went to Cali for college and she almost didn't move back home for the weather alone....

Co-signing on everything RR said. The only reason I am here is because my grad school program is top-ranked. Socially, I don't like it here. Not one bit. :nono:

Lovelymissolli, you can PM me if you like.

Hi...
I don't know of any Aveda salons that could handle black hair in the Detroit area(if you are ever in Chicago though, go to Eshe on 8 Michigan Ave and get Darnesha), but if you are looking for hair healthy in Detroit, try Culture Blur. It's in Detroit, and the owner is amazing (David). I lived in Michigan for 8 years, went to him a long time ago (should have never stopped), and was able to track him down and started going again early this year...he was so good that even after I left MI, I went back 2x to get him to do my hair(most recently in July).
It's on Schaeffer just north of McNichol...I hope it's still there. It was pretty new when I was going, only about a year old. Don't be fooled by the simple decor. You will LOVE your hair if you go there. He is truly a bomb stylist and he is all about healthy hair (313) 340-2025
If that number doesn't work, let me know...a friend was able to find him for me once, so if he's moved on to something else, maybe I can find him again.

I went to one new stylist after I moved south(KY but I miss Detroit) and she RUINED my perfect hair by being an impertinent idiot...nothing is worse than a stupid person who thinks she is being clever(in her case, by applying relaxer on top of my already relaxed hair while she had me turned away from the mirror, b/c she decided that my hair was so thick that it wasn't properly processed). So I really want to go back there to get started over.

There is an Aveda salon in Ann Arbor. They have a few black stylists. I would request to see one of them.

I went to Aveda once. I let the white stylist do my hair. They did a good job up until the flat ironing. Didn't get my roots straight at all. :nono:

But I loved all the products they used on my hair. :yep:

No one could pay me to move back to MI. I'm not a fan of Texas either, but it beats MI. I moved almost 4 years ago, and it was the best decision I've ever made!

I from flint but I now live in the NYC... not to bash my home state but I'd never move back to MI:nono: I agree with all the other ladies

As per the Ann Arbor News, Foreclosures up 90%.

Michigan is okay, you just have to be openminded to what fun can be. When I first moved to Ann Arbor, I went out with my co-workers every weekend until the winter hit. Yes, we did hang out in Ann Arbor, with maybe one trip to Royal Oak. I think is lacking is a "young black professional scene" in Ann Arbor, Detroit,...hell, ALL of Michigan...which I worked proactively to try to start up and help participate in. While I can't say that I will stay in Michigan for the long term, I am gonna try to make the most of it. Why am I not gonna stay in Michigan you might ask? Well, I am young, not committed to anything (i.e. not married, no children), and there are 50 states (many of which I love to reside in before I die).

In regards to graduate school, the University of Michigan has top grad programs and I suggest that you give it a look. You are not permanently moving to Michigan (it's just school). On the other hand, I sure you will get a good education anywhere.
