Measuring new growth

I've been wondering for a while how exactly everyone measures their new growth. Do you measure it in its natural curly state or do you stretch it out to its length?

I usually stretch mine as much as I can to see the true length then I measure with a ruler starting at the scalp to where I believe the new growth ends.
