...but since we are women, I wonder if others do this?

Do you relax or touch-up during that time of the month?

I don't. I remember one of my hairdresser's said a relaxer does not "take" as good if you are having that TOM. And it seems to be true.

I just wonder if others may notice this....

Thoughts?

Ha, ha! I don't relax anymore but I think the reason your hairdresser said the relaxer doesn't "take" is because you're more sensitive to pain during that time and customers may make her rinse the relaxer out too soon because of the burning. I've heard you're not supposed to schedule mammograms and dental appointments during that time for the same reason.

I have heard this too! Something about your hormonal levels being funny and that can effect the relaxer results or something. I don't know how true that is since hair is dead so what you are relaxing wouldn't have hormones on it. Maybe it is your scalp as well, maybe ph levels being off? Interesting.

I hate to sound like a meanie, but I don't think she knows what she is talking about.

Hormonal levels only affect parts of your body that can still receive hormones (i.e. living parts of your body with blood flow and a vascular system)
So hormonal changes in the body will not affect the hair on your head that has already grown out of the scalp (i.e. new growth) That hair is dead and cannot receive hormones from the body.

Some black hair stylists have all kinds of strange wives tale type notions about hair, and you have to take the advice they give with a grain of salt sometimes. A lot of this comes from them just not having enough information on the issues and so their explanations are colored by years and years of "advice" given from family members and friends.

Hormones CAN change the way your hair grows out of your head over a long period of time. But the hormonal changes that occur during out menstrual cycles don't really effect our hair that much honestly.

:scratchch That makes some sense. Even as a seasoned waxer, it really hurts to wax the eyebrows. YOWZA!

That is what I have been thinking too because if hair is "dead" then why should it matter? It must be the scalp factor..however isn't that what "base" is for? Hmmmm...

I can tell you! My last touch up which was 3 weeks ago to the day, it was the first day of my time of the month. The touch-up went fine, no burning at all (he based it damn good) and my roots were very straight...that is until I started using BT again.

So no worries, that's all hogwash.

Maybe it has something to do w/ scalp sensitivity and nothing to do w/ the actual hair itself. Maybe your scalp is more tender at this time?

Yeah Id be more apt to believe that..... but not that the relaxer itself doesnt "take"

lol.

Thats similar to those old women that used to tell girls not to swim or wash their hair during their periods.

Or wash your hair in ice cold water during TOM and you will go insane...

Ok, I guess it is cool to perm. I don't think I am going to make it until 8/1 to relax.
