What causes matting?

Is it too much protein or too much moisture? I have done a search and read previous threads, but can't find a definitive answer. Any suggestions on how to fix it? Its not severe matting. But its enough for me to worry that it may cause damage if not corrected soon.

TIA!

From my experience, my hair matting comes when I don't detangle my hair thoroughly. The shed hairs tangle with my hair so I make sure too comb my hair well to remove the shed hair. If I don't do so and get in the shower, I'm asking for trouble because water only worsens the problem. HTH

I don't think I've had matting from protein or moisture overload. Maybe someone else can chime in.

Well when I took out my braids I detangled it very well. I used keracare humecto and it came out fine... My unappreciative self decided to use a heavy protein for "strength" I used UBH Conditioner which is a heavy protein conditioner. It was MAT city after that. I lost so much hair. I think heavy protein causes matting from my experience. I used so much condtioner (moisture) to get them out. Maybe someone else can help as far as getting the knots out.

I kind of agree with both of the other posters...I got matted hair when I wasn't detangling correctly and had overmoisturized hair. It think that it can go either way and the best thing to do is to find a good balance.

hmm.. im natural & i had matting from shed hair and DRY hair.

My hair doesn't matt anymore because I make sure to loosely comb through before washes and i do my best to maintain good moisture levels.

maybe it just depends on the person and our hair :look:

I used to have bad matting and it use to always break my hair out and keep it at shoulder length, along with stylist contributing to the factor of keeping my hair short:mad: . I found a balance that works great. it is moisture, protein then hot oil treatment. I rotate each treatment every week. i am 4 months post and I haven't had a matt yet, which is very suprising for me. I also invested in a filter which I think helped too.:)

I agree with the other posters. It is mainly a result of improper detangling.

Are you a no/infrequent comber? Or primarily use wide-toothed combs?

i do lots of cw's and i comb with a jilbere shower combe with lots of conditioner. the matting has been very sudden! My hair rarely tangles.

How far apart are the teeth in your comb? :scratchch

I am wondering if you might need multiple combs for detangling. It might be that you are not quite detangling and working the kinks out as well as you could be. Then once that hair dries... For me, it works best if I start with a large bone comb, then a medium comb, and work my way down to a finer toothed comb. Before I was working with a large toothed comb only, and while it smoothed my hair alright, I developed a baby dredlock under my bun:lol:

Like Sistaslick said, try follwing this comb with another comb with smaller teeth.

When I was using this comb exclusively I had matts and tangles out the ass AND dreadlocks. I use this to detangle while I am in the shower, but once I am out and have applied my leave-ins, I run my hair with this and then break my hair down in smaller sections and comb.

This comb alone ain't gonna cut it.

Kurlee, I use this comb exclusively, and I've never had a problem with matting. The trick, for me, is to run this comb through each section of wet, pre-conditioned hair several times, over and underneath, until the comb glides smoothly, from root to tip. Hope this helps.

ETA: I just washed my hair yesterday, and at 11 weeks post, this method still works great.
