Maintaining Twists

I've done my twists all by myslef!
They were great ..while they lasted. (Approximately 3 days with a neat look)

But how can i avoid the matted look where it's sectioned?
Should I do the twists closer towards my relaxer application about 2 weeks later.
Smaller sections?
Or are they unavoidable?

Twist into smaller sections and try and keep it flat at night. I usually use a water-based moisturizer to remoisturize the twists and base of where I sectioned the hair, then I tie it down with a satin or silk durag. This keeps away the frizz/matted look for me.
