I just switched to a lye relaxer. I think Lye is generally better for the hair, but if you have a sensitive scalp it may burn more than no-lye. No-lye is formulated to be gentle on the scalp, but is supposed to be more drying to the hair. With that said, everyone is different, you'll have to try it yourself to see.

Hands down, lye for me. The difference between my no-lye hair and lye hair is night and day. I have about an inch of no-lye hair left, and I can't wait to trim it away because it's so thin, stringy, and fragile. The lye texlaxed hair is ultra strong, soft, and thick.

Of course some women here would say the exact opposite so I agree with CAPlush that it's a subjective thing. You just have to try both and see what you think. Many women complain of not getting bone straight hair with lye, but I actually like that about it since I texlax and prefer that my hair have much of its body and thickness left.
