Lye and No-Lye: What's The Difference?

I'm asking this question purely out of curiosity. I'm a natural, and when I was relaxed, I never self-relaxed. I keep hearing people on here saying that they switched from lye to no-lye or no-lye to lye.

What's the difference? How does lye affect hair? Is it necessarily good or bad for your hair?
