Look at those delicate, soft, pretty tendrils of hair around your hair line! I love the shine and waves in your hair. That bun looks thick, full and so touchable. What a lovely picture of you and your bun!
@Chicoro you’re going to give me a big head

The curly edges turned out better than I had expected. But now I’m trying to figure out why the very center of my hairline has less breakage than the sides. A new mystery to ponder.

Luscious Healthy Ends Update: May 2025

Alright, we are heading into the last week of May 2025.

How are you progressing?
I am doing well in that I keep my ends protected. I haven't been consistent with my fenugreek oil and I have not been consistent with putting my scarf on at night. I don continue with my Scurl and Shea butter on the ends and gel on the roots of my hair. I put in some protein about 4 times a month and I use clays when I wash my hair and deep condition after my washes.

What are those ends looking like?
I just trimmed my hair in April. I did notice a long stand of hair and it had three knots in succession on the end of the strand. I didn't trim it. I can't even remember where it was in my hair. In general, my hair ends look pretty good.

Have you had any epiphanies?
I haven't had any epiphanies regarding my own hair. Oh wait! I realized that I cannot pin back my braid because it breaks my hair off in that section. So, no more bobby pins in my head. I just let all my braids fall freely.

Have you set bolder goals?
I thought my hair would be longer, closer to hanging over my behind by now. When I pull my hair, it still looks like it is where it was in September. I'm not complaining. I am so glad my hair is no longer breaking off.

Have you pulled back on some goals?
I am letting my hair do what it wants to do. I had expectations and hopes of a certain length by June 2025 and by December 2025 but I don't think those will transpire. That's okay because I love being out of the Break Zone and Break Cycle, which in itself is a blessing.

Have you had any realizations about your hair or your hair care practices?
I like to continue to remind myself to not just put just anything on my hair. Nothing is totally harmless and nothing is totally safe and anything can potential break my hair. So, I am not open to trying new products. I used to just put something all over my head to try it. I catch myself even now about to put something new and untied in my hair without thought. I got to stay vigilant.

How is your consistency?
I am consistent with keeping my ends protected. That is about as much consistency as I can muster for now.

Extending grace to you?
Yes I am. It feels really nice, too.
What I remember from your last set of pictures is that you had layers. And your shorter layers were quickly growing to reach your longer layers. Although your longer layers may be in about the same area as they were before, your shorter layers are much longer. So what you will see on your next check-in should be more fullness. Once the hairs catch up, I think you will see your longest layers quickly take off.

It is still very possible for you to be where you want to be by the end of December. I think it just takes a different path than what we may be thinking.

"Extending grace to you?

I’ve taken this notion of extending grace to myself and applied it to my weight loss journey. It helped me shift my mindset from being disappointed at my slow progress to making positive changes to get out of my plateau."

I love to see this for you @GettingKinky !!!!!
I love seeing this for @GettingKinky as well. Since we have a lifetime of eating and ups and downs, having grace now will pay off so much.

I tried leaving my short edges out and curly. It looks okay, but not even because the short parts are more on the sides than in the center.

They are still wet in the picture below but they look the same after they dried.

Tomorrow I will try making a purposeful part and see how that looks.

Your hair is soooo cute.

Now I can see what you mean about your shorter hairs in the front. It may not be helpful but this is not uncommon or unnatural. Your edges and your temples just do their own thing and you have done nothing wrong. My temples are just sigh! When I look at my baby pictures what I see now is my natural hair pattern.

That yours are so long to me means that you are really doing something right.

Unfortunately, I don't have any help in how to get them to grow as long as the rest of the hair. But keep doing what you are doing.

I have fell off on a lot of things since April. I think I ate too much gluten over a period of time and my it wrecked havoc on my body. So will use May and June to get it together and see if I can get back on track. I've stayed consistent with my weekly cleanses but haven't paid as much attention to my hair as I did the early part of the year. I think I'm fine though.

How are you progressing? What are those ends looking like?
My ends are OK. I won't have a clear assessment of them until I do 2 strand twists again. I think there is a slight improvement. But I plan to blowdry and use my Split Ender at the end of June to get rid or more bad ends. I think that will move me to the next level.

Have you had any epiphanies?
Not really epiphanies. But when GettingKinky was getting tips on her blowdry, it occurred to me that I have an Aphogee balanced moisturizing conditioner. I will use that on my next blow dry.

This is more of a reconfirmation: I need to reset my hair after 4 days no matter what style I wear. My scalp needs water every 4 days.

Have you set bolder goals?
No. I try to keep goals small so when I surpass them I can feel more excited.

Have you pulled back on some goals?
No. I think my goals are still the same. I want to have the majority of my hair SL by the end of the year with my longest layers touching APL. Reaching this would be a first in soooo many years.

Have you had any realizations about your hair or your hair care practices?
I need to spritz my nape with a moisturizing spray every other day because that is the driest part of my hair.
Spritzing the ends of my twist with that same spray is helpful but just starting this.

How is your consistency?
I consistently reset every week. And on the weeks I can I reset midweek as well.
I am very inconsistent on applying my scalp oil and massaging my scalp.

Extending grace to you? Yep

Other:
My pull tests aren't showing any real length. But Friday, I put my hair into 6 Bantu Knots after I rinsed and they stayed just fine. And the Bantu Knots were closer to my crown versus being towards my nape. I'm pretty sure the last time I checked I had to do 8 Bantu Knots and the back was barely holding on.

I also tried gelling my hair and pulling it into a banana clip bun. The back is still a couple of inches too short but I could have pulled it off and had a little poof poof at the top. But then I looked at my temples and was like naw, I'm not feeling that look. But I think in the future I could do some 2 strands in the front and bun the back.

What a lovely, thoughtful, encouraging thing to say. I appreciate this. Thank you, @faithVA . I certainly didn't look at things the way you have presented them here. My focus was definitely on arriving or not arriving to the goal, in a way different than you have suggested. And I agree with what you have stated.

It plays into the idea that hair has wisdom. It drops to a certain length, then 'waits' for the rest to catch up to that newer length. Then, once the bulk catches up, that 'lead hair' drops down in length again. And the process repeats. I'm don't have experience about what is going to happen next as this is about as long as my hair has gotten for me, as an adult. We shall see!

I agree! Keep doing what you are doing @GettingKinky . The hair looks healthy, silky and shiny and so touch-ably soft in your posted photo.

I am not sure but I think you have a regal, high forehead. I say I am not sure because I can't see your full face.

And you have a full, pretty hairline. I think this style is cute. The other style is beautiful because it showcases your forehead and that thick, enviable hairline that so many of us covet.

Keep going and keep sharing your cute pictures and let us know which style you fall in love with. We are on the journey with you.

I think if I keep a more substantial bang I will have to cut them because they are a bit too long

The nice thing about the longer bangs is that they cover the 11 lines on my forehead…

Not 11 lines!!!! Out here counting and taking notes, lol. Are you like me, where you can fix your mouth shut but not your face? I remember when I was younger, a mature woman told me to stop scrunching my face or I’m going to get wrinkles. Her skin was beautiful by the way. She had to be in her late 70s at the time. Lol, I’m just out here accepting my lines because it keeps others safe, lol.

May Update

How are you progressing? What are those ends looking like?
I think things are going okay. I've still got the braids in so my ends are tucked away so I can't see them. I think they're okay.

Have you had any epiphanies?
Not really, I am thinking about some protective styles I can wear once I take down my braids.

Have you set bolder goals?
No, I'm still sticking with my original ones.

Have you pulled back on some goals?
No, not yet, still waiting till December to make any decisions on that.

Have you had any realizations about your hair or your hair care practices?
Not at this time, my hair is tucked away so I've not really had much to do to it.

How is your consistency?
Other than once (maybe twice), I've been very consistent with putting on my bonnet before bed and spraying my hair with my DIY moisture spritz. I think this has helped to keep the braids looking fresher for longer. It may allow me to get a couple more weeks out of them, it really depends on my how long my scalp will allow me to go though.

Extending grace to you?
Yes, I think so. There's not a lot happening at the moment, although I'm looking forward to my next washday.I've been thinking a lot about all the growth and thickness I gained while doing so little. I definitely want to keep my regimen simple or as simple as possible.

May Update

How are you progressing? What are those ends looking like? Since my April trim, I have managed to maintain my end health. I did have a few strands break off, but the majority of my hair is doing fine

Have you had any epiphanies? I used heat last weekend, and I did have short strand breakage this weekend when I did my wash day. So no using heat at home, only when I see my stylist in another city

Have you set bolder goals? Still have the same goal as before, APL by year end

Have you pulled back on some goals?
No, none pulled back

Have you had any realizations about your hair or your hair care practices? That I am not good at using heat, so I should stick to airdrying for the sake of my ends

How is your consistency? I have been pretty consistent with my hair care practices, and I am proud of myself

Extending grace to you?
I am trying to after the heat debacle. But I am scared to experiment now, especially when I wanted to do a cute style for my birthday next week

MAY UPDATE:

How are you progressing? What are those ends looking like?
•My ends look good. I completed an S&D about two and a half weeks ago. The S&D did bring my length back to just above CBL, which is a bummer, but I’m okay. I’ll recover.

Have you had any epiphanies?
•Mislabeling a moisturizing deep conditioner as a protein conditioner threw my hair out of balance. Since my hair was doing well, I didn’t think anything of it. I should have known something was off when my hair kept getting frizzier after each wash session. I thought the frizziness was due to not using heat when I deep condition. I was wrong.

Have you set bolder goals?
•Nope. I’m staying where I’m at.

Have you pulled back on some goals?
•I have thought about it, but I changed my mind. I can still make APL by December if I focus and stay consistent.

Have you had any realizations about your hair or your hair care practices?
•I need protein, but not a lot. I used Skala Divino (Medium Protein) two days in a row and my hair feels amazing and the frizziness is practically gone.

How is your consistency?
•I’m okay. I’m no longer in my twists as I originally planned, but I’m cowashing daily and hiding my hair in buns with satin scrunchies.

Extending grace to you?
•Always. I’m basking in grace.

Variation of the LOC Method

LOG - Leave In, Oil, Gel

Whenever I use gel in my hair, I use LGO - Leave-in, gel then oil. Oil seems to work best for me as the last step. I'm sitting wondering what difference LOG might make to my hair, I don't think it would be detrimental in anyway, especially as the oil would be applied to a leave-in. I'm wondering if it would prevent a jard setting gel from drying harder than I'd like? It's quite interesting.

This the one my mom has

Is that one of their kids range? Gosh they've got so many, I've found some of their ingredient lists online, but not all of the ones I'm interested in. They seem to have protein and coconut oil in the majority of them,it's a little difficult to figure out to what degrees.I'll need to go to a BSS where I can use Google to translate

I've bookmarked some reviews on YouTube, once I get around to watching them, I will definitely be starting a conversation about them, you all know how I love a good conversation about conditioners and moisturisers.

I have no idea lol I just picked one at random. I don't think so?
