@keranikki
How long is your hair? Does it touch your shoulders? It looks long. It has a lot of length and is it the same length all around?

You also look baby-faced, with such pretty skin and gorgeous facial features - and make-up free at that, too! Just effortless, natural beauty.
First, thank you for your kind words! I appreciate you so much! :rose:

Most of my hair, when stretched, comes to my collarbone. From my edges to 1.5” back, my hair is in graduated lengths with the longest length right above my collarbone. I’m nursing this area with massage and an herbal spray to encourage growth.

I think I will reach APL by the time the summer gets here. My growth has been steady and I’m staying on top of my trims. I wonder if I can reach MBL by December? I have to look through my old photos and see the distance between APL and MBL on me.

I hope you do. Being the nosy creature that I am, I looked up the booking. You didn’t ask me, but you may want to consider scheduling for that May appointment as soon as you can.

That’s what caught my eye, too. So often it feels like black women are just ‘tolerated’ at these types of establishments for these types of services. But her advertising, brown hands giving the service to Afro-textured haired, brown woman, in her advertising makes it clear that black women and their hair are celebrated. On her Instagram page, she explicitly states they offer the Japanese hair massage for black girls.

I believe that you are going to be treated well that you will be celebrated when you go and experience this service.

I booked my appointment as soon as I realized she's only open 4 days a week. It's going to worth taking a bus and train to get there.

You are welcome. I knew it was long! Claim that mid back length. Get a photo and color it in and create your own photo with your hair already there!
What herbal spray are you using? Is is something that you made or you bought it?

Has anyone ever seen this video?

I came across it and thought it was really interesting and probably the most aggregated scientific information on coily hair that I’ve seen. I hope more studies like this happen.

Thank you for sharing this video with us.

Overall, I think it was an excellent presentation.

I learned something about the size of ortho cortical and para cortical cells. In the slide the presenter mentioned Wortmann. I know and met him and spoke with him. He is a contemporary and good friend of J Alan Swift as they both went to undergraduate together and studied at the same university. Dr Swift mentored me via emails. Dr Swift is the person who discovered ortho cortical and para cortical cells. Both of these men are in their 80's now.

Dr. Crystal Porter, the presenter posits this in the slides:

"Is it better to have stronger hair that is more difficult to manage or weaker hair that is easier to comb?"
(Do you leave your hair natural with its texture that is harder to comb, or do you chemically relax it, which weakens it, to make it easier to comb?)
@21 minutes and 26 seconds into the slide show.

Here is my PROBLEM with the white male dominated hair science industry and their conclusions:
"Hair of African Descent is Weaker than Caucasian Hair"
@23 minutes and 31 seconds

How does this positively inform women with afro-textured hair? What can they really do with such a conclusion besides see a racial hierarchy that puts them in a NEGATIVE position?

Another video that lets you see Dr. Porter.

Alright, we are heading into the last week of March 2025.

How are you progressing? What are those ends looking like?

Have you had any epiphanies?

Have you set bolder goals?

Have you pulled back on some goals?

Have you had any realizations about your hair or your hair care practices?

Has your consistency?

Extending grace to you?

I am not consistence with covering my head, using my oil and putting my protein mix on my hair weekly. BUT I am consistent with keeping my ends protected.

I need to keep my HAIR protected more like @MzSwift does. Meaning, as soon as I get into the house, oil my hair and COVER until the next morning.

I am taking a RISK by attempting to extend my micro-trims to every four (4) months. I hope I am making the right decision.
In 2024 I did micro-trims every three (3) months for a total of five (5) micro trims for the year in 2024.

Micro Trim I - January 2024
Micro Trim 2- March 2024
Micro Trim 3-June 2024
Micro Trim 4 -September 2024
Micro Trim 5- December 2024

I do NOT want to fall back into my 12 year break cycle again.

I plan to trim at the end of April 2025. I will make an assessment then. I HOPE beyond HOPE this is a good decision for my hair. So why change it? Because I have an intuitive nudge that every four (4) months may work and I prefer less trimming overall. Micro- Trims every four (4) months instead of every three (3) months will take me from five (5) trims per year to three (3) trims per year.

What herbal spray are you using? Is is something that you made or you bought it?

I’m using a spray mentioned in another thread (Yerba de la Negrita) called Yerba Herbal Concentrate by Taos. I just started using it.

I've been thinking about this so thanks for the questions @Chicoro so that I could answer and get it down in a post.

How are you progressing? What are those ends looking like?
I've been pleasantly pleased with my progress. I wanted to improve my thin ends and improve my overall density in 2025. My ends not only look better than they did in 2024, but my retention has improved to the point of progress is moving into it being visually noticeable.

Have you had any epiphanies?
My epiphany was two fold - one I had been slowly becoming annoyed with trips to Atlanta to work with a trichologist that I started working with back in 2021. When I got my CCCA diagnosis at the end of 2023, I decided to move from virtual visits with her to in person. So I made my first trip down to Atlanta and bought a plan with some in person visits. I'll be really careful with how I express my annoyance because I don't want to tear down a black owned business. The folks are nice enough BUT for my needs, it really stopped being worth the expense of travel. But importantly, i realized just following their plan without applying things I've learned over the years straight from this forum left me with very little progress towards the goals I've stated year after year on this forum - DENSITY with length.

2) I was limiting my own ability to get the progress I wanted by ONLY considering non-medical aka "natural only" options. To be clear, MANY of my issues were resolved with diet changes, acupuncture, exercise, improving sleep and lots of supplements to roughly 85 to 90% improvement over a 6-7 year period. But the most consistent issue that hasn't resolved was my density and that spot at my crown. If I wanted progress, I needed to stop limiting my options.

Have you set bolder goals?
Yes, one thing I learned is that professional microneedling at therapeutic depths have to administered by a medical professional in most states. My appointments in Atlanta supposedly were for microneedling but I noticed NONE of the technicians were licensed medical professionals, so what they were applying was at superficial depths, not at therapeutic depths.

So, my bolder goal in 2025 is to try therapeutic depth microneedling with my dermatologist coupled with the best known (and well studied) medical products that have a track record with hair loss. This lead to changes in my core 2025 team and a readjusting of my overall 2025 plan.

Have you pulled back on some goals?
No, but I needed to adjust my expectations as my choice to add prescriptions to my toolbox comes with a slight temporary backwards step in order to get moving forward at a faster pace.

Have you had any realizations about your hair or your hair care practices?

I've known all along what BASE practices help with length retention - everything I've learned here. My hair always thrives with regular protein use, amla & fenugreek scalp masks and CONSISTENT hair care. It doesn't have to be fancy.

Also, scalp massages are what I've been sleeping on. This year they have made the difference in the amount of hair I've shed on wash day and daily.

Wow, this is amazing! I always say that afro-textured hair growth is a THINKING game and NOT a GUESSING game and this here post epitomizes it. I was holding my breath and not realizing it because I was gulping in your experience, knowledge and opinion within this post. That was some GOOD reading and I thank you for taking time to not only write out this detail, but I thank you for the careful thought you put into this post. It shows you value us and more importantly, it shows you value yourself.

What I am about to say may seem like an unrelated digression, but in my head it is not. Too often, as a black woman consumer it seems that we are not only given the scraps, but those very scraps are tossed to us. For example: having hair care products marketed to us that are made from low quality and often health compromising ingredients. Being 'tolerated' in establishments where services are provided instead of being welcomed or celebrated.

So, the fact that you are identifying your displeasure and lack of satisfaction with a service, AND doing something about it by making a change in your choices is refreshing and inspiring and encouraging. The fact that you are coupling medical advice with your experience and knowledge from your past hair successes indicates the trust and wisdom that you have cultivated from within yourself and for yourself.

You have the confidence and wherewithal to extend your knowledge and come to the realization that a certain type of certification and medical training impacts the results of the services you are seeking and the expectations that you have for the services promised and provided. You stated that a certain depth needs to be in the scalp and that can only be provided by someone with more specialized and more medical training than the folks have at the first place you were going to you. And you know for sure 'Cause you checked!

On one hand, it pains me that black women often have to go above and beyond to get a basic service or the standard service, even when dealing with 'our own' service providers, as demonstrated by the necessary lengths taken by @mzteaze but so be it.

Although it may be hard and sometimes we may require respite as we need to just fall back and shelter at times, it is this refinement of us, this fortification of us that keeps us thriving and resilient.

So when you hit a wall or an obstacle, which is even easier to do in today's environment, don't you ever forget what it took to get you here. The FACT that we are on this site and able to discuss something as mundane as hair, meaning we have the time and leisure to do so, is an incredible testament to who we are and from where we have come in comparison to our mothers, grandmothers and great grandmothers.

Lastly, when I was in the US I had several rental properties and I was out front working in the yard. Kitty corner to my house, which was the second house from the corner, was another house. A gorgeous woman who was obviously black was playing with this young man. His father was white and I believe his mom was black but his mom was absent from the home permanently. The two of them were about 21. So they get up on the roof and are sitting there and playing. I looked again because the mood had changed to something somber and heavy and all the playfulness had been drained from their interaction. I could hear it . I could feel it. I could sense it.

I looked up because I saw that she was STUCK on the edge and was frightened to step on the ladder and come down. I watched the scene play out for about 20 minutes and it wasn't getting better. Her panic was escalating.

I put down my rake and calmly walked over to the house crossing the street with my eyes fixed on the young, black woman on the roof. Without a word or nod to him, I climbed the ladder, and I extended my hand to her and said, "Come on down. It's okay."

She tried to step down but her fear gripped her and she returned and remained solidly in place and would not budge.

I looked at her and said, "You are a black woman in this world. If you can be successful and survive in this world, you can do anything. You can surely step off that ladder."

I could feel his face swing and whip abruptly toward me like, "What ..the heck...does that have to do with anything?" It's not what he said though, as he said nothing.

My eyes never left her face.I did not smile. I said what I said matter of factly, because it was facts. I extended my hand one more time. She turned her back and found her footing on the ladder and she came down and scampered into the house. I stepped off the ladder and then he came down and followed her into the house.

I never saw that young woman again. And that was the first and last time I ever had any interaction with that young man.

All this to say, that as a black woman in America, you are constantly being shaped and strengthened by all that befalls you. Whether it be poorly rendered services, working through hair challenges or not ever being offered the best ingredients for a product specifically made and destined for you. That can take a toll on your self esteem and your Spirit.

On the contrary, because of all of this, as black women, we have continued to learn to do what is best for us. We have honed an intuition and a strength that the world truly marvels at. I know because I have lived in many countries and overheard the awe filled voices as things were said in front of me, me who was inconspicuous and invisible.

This post by @mzteaze triggered this wonderful observation in me that I have about black women. And her post beautifully demonstrates this to me. Our experiences can help us override our fear and compel us to step onto a ladder even though we might be frozen with fear on the edge of a roof, and our experiences propel us to seek out what is best for us by studying requirements and finding a provider to give us the service we seek. You have eyes that see and ears that hear what many others are blind and deaf to. It's not by chance or luck. It is because you are black women who are surviving and thriving in this world.

Steps off soap box.

In 2024 I did micro-trims every three (3) months for a total of five (5) micro trims for the year in 2024.

Micro Trim I - January 2024
Micro Trim 2- March 2024
Micro Trim 3-June 2024
Micro Trim 4 -September 2024
Micro Trim 5- December 2024

Not sure what happened in 2024, but if you trim every 3 months/90 days, you should only have 4 trims in a year and not 5. So If every 4 months doesn't work for you, and you need to back to every 3 months, maybe it will make you feel better that it is only 4 trims.

If I trim in December, and I trim every 3 months then I only have a trim in March, June, September and then December for a given year.

All is well in my hair world. Not a lot going on. I'm just keeping things simple because the rest of life is busy.

HOW ARE YOU PROGRESSING? What are those ends looking like?

Everything is progressing well. My weekly regimen is clear, so I know what I'm doing when. As I said I'm keeping things simple because I spent too many years doing too much.

My ends are better but I am addressing them in phases. What does that mean. I knew with my December straightening that I had some serious breakage after returning from work. For my hair that doesn't get remedied in a couple of months. My next trim in April will put me in a better place. And by the end of the summer my ends should be in a good place.

I also need my back to grow out to a consistent length to give it weight and to reduce amount of curling it does. By the summer, I think the back will have outgrown the drastic cut my last stylist gave me

I will stretch my hair in April and do a trim to get a good check. I won't straighten. But this will give me a good indication of where my hair really is.

ANY EPHIPHANIES?
No.

BOLDER GOALS?
No, for me, slow and steady wins the race.

PULLED BACK ON SOME GOALS?
No. My goals were conservative for this year. I really only reach for the next goal and not further.
This year, I'm trying to get the majority of my layers to APL, which will be the longest my hair has been in years.

REALIZATIONS ABOUT HAIR OR HAIRE CARE PRACTICES?
1. Changing to the Prose products had me rethink my conditioner. I think I need to try conditioners for fine color treated hair. For now I reordered the Prose conditioner but over the next few months I will look for a replacement conditioner.

2. It dawned on me that after adding leave-in, I could put my hair into a host of twist and dry my twist with the RevAir. Then when the twist are mostly dry, I can dry each section and then twist my hair in its stretched state. Not sure why I never thought of this before. This gives me a shorter styling day.

3. The important products, shampoo, conditioner and leave-in I'm good with. At some point I need to nail down some stylers for all my different styles: flat twist, 2 strands, twist/bantu knot outs. I have things I've purchased but none of them are the IT product. They will do for now.

Has your consistency?
My consistency is good. Since the start of the challenge, I've reset my hair every Saturday or Sunday without fail. Having to go into the office helps me be more consistent even though I dislike having to go to the office.

It was 5. I trimmed the first week in January. Technically, it was not three whole months between January and March, but close enough. When I get a look at my hair end of April 2025, I will make my decision then. In the meantime, business as usual. I may go back to three months and join you. We will see!

Small shifts, the details, can have huge impacts. Good for you!

I know it was 5. I was just saying with the math, in the future it would only be 4 if you stuck to the schedule. This is me being Ms. Details with the math
Something must have happened for you to feel you needed to add another trim in that short period of time.

I actually do 4 months now. And I will do a search and destroy in between to extend the time. I have not found an advantage to do anything less than every 4 months.

Since the response is so positive, I am going to ask these questions at the end of each month from now on. You all are providing some very interesting and absorbing responses. I need to get ready for bed on this side of the pond.
I liked the set of questions and I think the end of each month is a good time span for reflection and to make adjustments for the upcoming month if any are needed.

I'm just posting this here for future reference, so when I do my update in April, I have tracked this info somewhere.

I started using Hollywood Hair Growth oil in January. Not sure if my hair is growing faster but it has definitely helped with scalp inflammation. Between this oil and the Prose shampoo my scalp doesn't itch at all. That is a noticeable change. I have been applying it daily since I received it. I hate scalp massaging but I do something :look: each day. I have about 30 days left of the oil so it will be enough to get me through April 20th which will be about 90 days.

I took pictures so I can compare January to April. Sometime in April, I will do 2 strand twists to see how my bald spot is doing. And I will do the final comparison of length to see if I got any extra.

I usually don't care how things smell but I like the way this oil smells. I also like how balanced it is. I can use it every day and my hair isn't greasy and it doesn't cause my scalp to break out like most oils do. When I finish applying it to my hair, I can just massage the rest into my hands and my hands aren't greasy. Although, I love the way it smells, I have to use it in the morning. I've tried before bed twice and have been up for hours because I couldn't sleep  Lesson learned.

Thank you. This is good to know! I copied the questions into the first post of this thread. That way I’ll have a record and can ask the same questions consistently.

I was wondering about this too. If the first trim was the 1st week of Jan every 3 months would be

Jan 2024
April 2024
July 2024
Oct 2024
Jan 2025

So it should only be 4 times each year. @Chicoro I’m guessing you didn’t wait a full 3 months between your trim in Jan and the one in March so you fit in 5 trims in for 2024.

I’ve been working on taxes all day so it’s nice to take time to reflect on something more interesting like @Chicoro questions.

How are you progressing? What are those ends looking like?

My ends are doing pretty well. My last trim was in January and I think it’s about time for another one. I’m going to do it myself in April when I get back from vacation.

Have you had any epiphanies?

No epiphanies. Except that I really like the Briogeo Don’t Deapair Repair conditioner and the Briogeo superfood mask ththat I started using this year.

Have you set bolder goals?

My original binning goal was to go from October to Dec 2024. Im still doing it now and I’m thinking of keeping it up until at least June.
Have you pulled back on some goals?

Have you had any realizations about your hair or your hair care practices?

I think bunning is definitely keeping my hair more tangle free than wash n gos. Even my stylist has noticed. I think wash n gos may be good at maintaining length but maybe not the best for acquiring length.

How is your consistency?

My goal this year was to moisturize/hydrate often and be gentle with my my hair
My consistency has been really good. I have been washing/co washing 2x a week since October and mostly using my wide tooth comb to detangle rather than my detangling brush. I’ve also been mostly using my gentle moisture shampoo and very rarely using my all purpose and clarifying shampoos.

Extending grace to you?

I am very bad at this.

Duh! I didn't realize extending grace was a question. I thought it was a typo. Oh Magoo!
