I wonder how Shea butter works for sealing vs
grease. I will compare once I finish up my blue magic greases. I think I am going to grease my ends on a daily basis
For me, the two do not work the same. My final two steps are to use Shea butter and Vaseline before I put on my baggie, after I wash my hair.
  1. Shea butter is slathered on my after my water based, moisturizing product. I don't use it as a seal. I use it to immobilize my braids. Without using Shea butter my braids unravel. My braids become fuzzy because hair sticks out of the braids and then the loosened hair wraps around the braid and creates tangles and breakage. Shea butter does not have a lot of slip for me.
  2. Vaseline/Grease is slathered over the Shea butter. This provides slip and lubrication which Shea doesn't provide for me. The grease by itself is not enough for my hair because grease does not hold my hair in place. When my hair moves and frizzes, that's when I get tangles and breakage. The grease allows me to braid my hair without stickiness or breakage. Shea butter is gummy so my hair is difficult to braid if I only have Shea butter in my hair.
Thus, for me, I do not see these two as interchangeable sealants. For my hair, they serve two very different purposes. But again, that's me.

When you do this, do you comb your hair through after each layer of shea then Vaseline?

No. I don't use a comb anymore, on a regular basis.

I do a pre-poo with glycerine, oil and aloe vera and essential oils to break down the product build up and to cleanse my scalp of any odor.

I detangle with my fingers and get rid of shedded hair when I oil my hair. This is where I spend the majority of the time on my hair. After I oil my hair I use your Super Clay Mix and rinse and condition. Then, I put in my leave-in, which is Scurl. I tap the roots of each braid with gel.

Then, I slather on Shea butter from root to tip. I put on so much Shea butter that my hair is stick straight and pointy. Then, I put my Vaseline over the Shea. I slather on the Vaseline and it too coats my hair and I once again have stick straight hair for that section. The Vaseline allows me to separate the section in three (3) parts to braid it because it imparts tremendous lubrication.

I benefit from the gumminess of the Shea butter to keep my hair from unraveling and the Vaseline leaves my hair super soft. I love the combination for the way it leaves my hair feeling. BUT, the combination of Shea and Vaseline (petroleum) coats the hair and leaves a greasy, white film and cast. For that reason, I don't recommend using them together on the roots of the hair.

I keep my hair in a baggie so it covers over all that product on my hair. It also keeps the product off my neck and clothes.

I think I’m going back to washing once a week. My baggy smells like yogurt :nono:

In my pre-poo mix I use essential oils like eucalyptus and peppermint in my glycerine and oil and aloe vera mix. I massage it into the scalp and into my hair as a pretreatment. It removes any funk from my dirty hair.

It also helps my hair to remain more clean smelling until the next wash. Remember, essential oils are anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and anti-viral. Thus, they may retard the growth of things in the baggy that may cause odor.

This is intriguing!

I never thought to use them together! I will be trying this!

I did my weekly routine. Olaplex, all purpose shampoo on new hair, moisture shampoo on all my hair.
I need to figure out my plan for my next trim. I don’t really want to go to my curly stylist because I feel she removes too much hair even when she thinks she’s only cutting a little. But I’m also nervous about getting a cut on blown out hair and then it not looking good when curly.

How about you do an extra step? First go to the non-curly stylist and get your hair blown out straight only, no trim. Why? So you can see and record the shape of the ends of your hair. You know that the shape of your hair works for your curly styles. Photograph the hair. Now you have a record of the baseline trim you need to have a good result for your curly style.

Then, go back to the non-curly stylist, give her direction using you photo record on what you want cut and how you want cut. Yes, you are spending extra cash and extra time this round. But, once you do it successfully, you have an established process. It's like running an old computer system in parallel with the new one. Once you are sure the new one works, you can shut the old one down. But, to be safe, you got to run them together the first time to make sure that the new one is working satisfactorily.

After you do that, now you have created options for yourself. Those options are going to the curly stylist and the non curly stylist. The pros and cons are the curly stylist cuts your hair perfectly for your curly styles but she may be compromising your length gains with her 'trims". The non-curly stylist may allow for smaller trims which can support your length gains but her trims may compromise the look of your curly styles. If you have them both, you can manage and negotiate out the results you don't want!

All this to say, I think your plan is brilliant. Go for it!

I think your curly cuts have stunted your length retention. Depending on your length goals I don’t think you can have the best curly shape and length at the same time

Alright ladies, are you ready for Monday, for the upcoming week? Let's set ourselves up for success! Get those hair tools washed. Make sure you have your hair care products for the week. And, get your plan in place for what you will do with you hair for the week.

I have been ill since Wednesday. I had planned to wash my hair this weekend but I nixed that because I don't want to catch pneumonia. Thus, I am going to go into a third week without washing my hair.

There is absolutely no odor on my scalp even though my primary way to cleanse is with powders. I think because I incorporate essential oils into my routine, that helps with maintaining the cleanliness.

I am not going to re-braid or do anything. I will just extend my 'baggie' into week #3. Hopefully, I will feel better and be able to do my hair this Saturday.

This is an interesting idea. I haven’t had my hair professionally blown out in 5 and half years.

Feel better soon!
