Longhairdontcare2011's hair when it's wet

If she does not want to wear her natural texture, but instead use heat to manage her hair, why is it such a big deal? There are tons of straight aka "heat trained" naturals and if it works for them, so be it. She is not wearing wash & go hair so her texture does not even matter.

Her hair looks gorgeous!! If (or when) my hair hits that length, nobody will be able to tell me anything. Shoot, I may heat train for 2012. Then again, if using keratin treatments at least 9 times did not heat train my hair, then maybe it cannot be heat trained?

I'd love to know more about your use of heat. You mentioned in my other thread that you do not protective style, and now to know that you use heat on some regular basis has me intrigued about your great length retention!

Tell us more:grin:

Didn't BrittaNYC (sp) say the heat from BKT helped her retain her length? It's how she came up with the idea of heat training.

^^ Yes, I think so. Brittany mentioned that she used BKT to get to her length goal, but then she stopped using BKT. She wore her hair straight after BKT (using heat to flat iron regularly after each wash) while I typically wore my hair curly after a BKT (flat ironed only for the treatment).

I really loved her message in the beginning. Very classy and straightforward. It doesn't make sense to put down other people for having a different texture, regimen, etc.

Her hair is absolutely gorgeous!!! Some pics look similar to my texture, I hope my hair looks like hers when it grows up! (lol) However, my fine strands cannot do heat.

She is 100% right. Heat can be used properly. Before I bc'd her regimen is basically exactly what I was doing. And I was *almost* WL. My hair was/still is very thick, soft, and I've retained my natural curl.

I think people bash heat because they bash what they don't understand or what didn't work for them. Hair is not 1-size-fits-all. I can withstand using high amounts of heat frequently, somebody else might be bald if they tried doing what I do. It's all about experimenting. Start slowly, dip you toe in the water before you do the cannonball.

naturalmanenyc Hey there madam!

My hair styles are normally seasonally based. I do protective style but just not 24/7. I also protective style for personal convenience and not for retention (i.e. I'll plait my hair in individual tiny braids for the summer just to wash and go every day because it gets too hot here). Sorry for not clarifying. But other than that I like my hair out.

As far as heat, I only use heat when it starts getting cooler in my area of Texas and yeah that's not very often. That's why I mentioned small dosages because all my hard work would be in vain fooling with these temps. So essentially all I am doing is using heat 3-4 times out of the year (once a month during the months of January, October, November, & December) only because the weather is nicer. But this is an example of how I would do it (always open to change):

  1. I'll blow dry and flat iron
  2. wear it straight for a week
  3. Instead of washing my hair the next week, I stretch the flat iron job by cornrowing my hair
  4. I'll wear the cornrows for a week or two, but I'll rinse/wash my hair in the cornrows at least once. It keeps my hair fresh and still looks good after a nice rinse.
  5. When I'm ready I'll take the cornrows out for a style and it'll look like it does in my siggy
  6. Then after a week of wearing my hair out, I will do my normal wash routine without heat. (Numbers 1-6 describe a one month period)
  7. After a couple of weeks without heat, I'll do a very light blow dry (on low heat) for a quick braid out or something.
  8. Then I'll chill out and air dry again
  9. After all this my hair still reverts. Splits are definitely one thing I look out for when using heat because although I may not have the ssks problem, splits are no joke. But, because I reduce the exposure of high heat directly to my strands, and I trim when needed, I don't see huge amounts of breakage from splits
This sounds like a lot but it's not. I'm able to preserve my styles without doing double work while switching it up for a new look. But remember it's only during Fall/Winter and they are at least 3-6 weeks apart.

Hope this helps.

Love her length.

I'm a long time heat user and my texture was fine and I retained length. Heck, getting a Brazilian blowout messed my hair up more than my prior 7-8 years of flat ironing. It's my biggest hair regret.

Is it because your hair is not tangleing up so much?

Sent from my ADR6350 using ADR6350

greenandchic I'm not entirely sure. I think it could be a combination of things like the heat temporarily elongating the strand making it less likely to tangle, the consistency of weekly detangling sessions, and by keeping my hair in stretched out styles.

Your hair sounds and looks just like my BFFs. Heat doesn't disturb her natural texture at all. She could do it all day long if she felt like it (lol) Me, on the other, mine loosens slightly each time. I couldn't possibly judge others because of *my* problem though. That's so immature.

*watches a LongHairDon'tCare video for the first time ever*

:thud:

I... I think I want to get off this no heat reggie :look:

off topic Daeuiel your siggy, spill it.

LOL okay! The pic is from New York Comic Con 2011. Jason was there doing some panels for Conan The Barbarian. I walked into the photo room and he stared at me and said in that lovely deep voice of his 'HOLY SH*T! Wow!'

Me: :giggle: :bdance::reddancer: I did a little shimmy and twirled around so he could see the flight support I'd sewn into my costume  I told him I made it myself and he said 'Nice!' We got ready to take our photo. He put his arm around me, patting my fro for a second (I was :yay: on the inside lol) before asking the photographer if he was in the shot. He adjusted his pose a bit tighter, I slipped my arm around him and groped his abs, smiled and took that photo

As I went to leave I said to him, 'I really miss Stargate Atlantis  If they ever asked you to come back for a special, would you?' He replied,

"I would do it in a second. I loved working on Stargate." :yep:

We said our goodbyes and I skipped merrily away :cloud9:

Only bad part: The photographer cut off the photo so you can't see me groping his abs *kicks rocks*

I love her and her hair! Her hair is so beautiful. My hair goal is shorter than hers but I love how long and thick her hair is.

See that's the thing. I have super fine strands too. I had to modify mine. She really only does heat once a month and that's in the form of blow drying. She then staightens a few times a year.

When I modify I let my hair dry mostly before blowdrying versus her idea which is to just blow dry straight from wet. I'd have two strands left if I did that all the time.

I think we have to find what worksfor us, our own personal balance so to speak.Though lately I've been protecting 24-7 to get to my goals faster (I am so ready for hip which is a hop skip and jump away and then tailbone)...I have in the past worn my hair out 24-7 doing modified version as mentioned above of what she does and my fine strands survived. BUT I think it's also about the products used to protect hair, etc as well as heavy moisture for me...dcing etc (at least for me).

I just tried blow drying with grape seed oil and my hair just straitened beautifully. No more fighting with my hair. This is the way to go from now on. I can either roller set after for a more strait look or bun it afterwards.

Her hair is gorgeous no matter how she got it. If it works for her, more power to her.

What I found most interesting about the video, however, was how fine her strands are. I often hear people say that she's had an "easier" time growing and retaining length because her hair is "coarse" and "thick". While her hair is thick (as in she has alot of it), her individual strands appear, at least to me, to be very fine.

Another testament to the fact that you don't need super-coarse, Oprah-like strands to grow long hair.

That's a whole lotta hair! I swear one section of her hair is thicker than my whole head o' hair! Eh, more power, she's got the length. My hair does not hold up well to heat. I've accepted it. Too bad there is no owner's manual that comes at birth. It's all trial and error!

Her hair is gorgeous, but it seems obvious to me that her texture has changed. I'm not saying that's bad, I'm just saying I'm not surprised because she straightens her hair/uses heat very often.

My hair loves heat in moderation, and like a pp said, I think that's why I've never had an issue with SSKs or tangling. However, seeing her hair was a wakeup call for me about what can happen.:yep: I'm one of those weird people who likes my shrinkage.

Lovely hair i wont be adding heat into my regular routine though i dont really want to do trial and error finding out how much heat before i jack it up :nono::lol:

I love her hair. I recently had to start using heat because my hair takes way too long to air dry now. At first I was worried about my texture changing, but really I can't wear my natural texture anyway. Any style I wear has to be stretched, so my texture really doesn't matter. All I worry about now is making sure I'm not causing split ends or ssks. I try to limit my heat use to once a month.

Sent from my HTC Evo

I thought about that the bold the other day. I've been natural for 3 years now and I only did a wash and go...twice. I don't wear my hair curly at all, I'm always in twists or twist-outs.

But I even like longhairdontcare's "natural" texture after the heat training. She seems to have the hair texture the shorter the hair the curlier the hair. But once the hair gets longer the texture "loosens" with length.

Its a combination of heat and the fact that her ends are about 6 years old give or take that her hair texture has changed...I want to say more so the age of her ends than the heat. She didnt really have a uniform or tight coily pattern of hair even in her early natural days.

I believe she's said as much, that her hair is heat trained and the texture as it comes out of her head is different than the texture farther down the shaft. I have no problem with that. Am considering it myself, in fact. :look:

Remember: she didn't start using heat in this way until she had been natural for a few years.

personally i wouldn't recommend someone start a reggie like this with SL natural hair if their goal is WSL or longer unless they have coarse strands.

LHDC2011 not only has coarse strands but also THICK hair. I can see how another youtuber, say kimmaytube for example, using this method may not have such great results and whose length could be stunted. heck folks say her hair looks thin and she's only used heat twice in the last 5 years.

if you don't know what your hair can handle, proceed with caution.

Glad to hear that.:yep: I've never listened to her vids because I only watch for the hair porn. I was surprised because it seemed like people were using her as an example that you can use heat with no damage to your texture, when heat has obviously changed hers. I'm glad she acknowledges that; I just hope her viewers are clear about it.

yeah, it's actually in the comments section of this video:

but i think she's said it before as well.

i'm working on blow drying *properly*, which clearly I don't know how to do. I'm hoping that improved blow drying will help me with my hair, too.
