If your hair was ever short. "As short as mine" What protective styles did you use to get to the next level if any at all. I really want long hair. Please help:drowning:

I'm completely confused about what my texture is but I'm definitely nappy and what I did depended on how short "short" was. About how many inches is your hair? I wore wash 'n gos for the first 1.5 years of being natural because I didn't know what else to do, and because cutting off a lot of damaged hair, rather than growing my hair, was my goal. From about 4-6" and longer, I wore twists more and more until I was living like 24/7 in protective styles. I've been wearing protective styles for the past 2 years (from about 4-6" to my current length), with the last year consisting of really faithful protective styling (box braids are my preference now)

Mine was shorter than yours at one time. I didn't know about protective styles yet but I did use good moisturizing products for conditioning, like Humectress and my hair grew out to SL length, maybe an inch below SL, in spite of hair abuses with direct heat. Then I discovered the hair boards and learned to care for my hair the right way.

The deep moisturizing conditioning I did about once each week probably saved me. I also kept my ends moisturized at all times during that time and I know that saved my hair.

I don't know if my 4b hair is long enough for you, but I wore a french twist frequently.
I moisturized then sealed and then a french twist.. Made sure to moisturize the ends heavy and tuck them away. Sometimes I would leave the same twist up for 2 days because I tied it down with a scarf at nite.

P.S. I still wear french twists and get compliments daily.

O wait a sec. I just noticed you're relaxed so all my stuff about twists and box braids isn't going to help. Are you looking for tips for relaxed hair?

I suggest getting kinky twists. It really helped my retain all of my growth as well as giving my hair a break from manipulation and heat.

Hi Wandabee,

My hair use to be shorter than yours...so what I did was when my hair got long enough to put into a small ponytail...I bought a "bun" and wrapped it around the ponytail with bobby pins and wore it like that seems like forever!! Then as it grew I would wear it down and give it a break! I kept my hair conditioned and moisturized all the time! Hope I helped some!

I Don't know if my hair is long enough for you (see fotki), but before I found LHCF I moisturized, properly permed, and only flat ironed once a week. Now that I am on LHCF, I am hoping that even less heat and sealing with oil will get me to BSL. I am in the '08 bootcamp challenge and plan on following all the rules starting 01/01/08. You should join tooo. I am sure you'll be to your goal length in no time.:yep:

When i cute my hair it was a lil longer than yours. For that summer i remember wearing banto knots and braid outs.

Since it is winter i would bun with maybe a phony pony.

My hair was your length about 2 years ago....
(I'm determined to create a fotki by the beginning of the year so you can see pics)

Anyway, my protective style of choice was bunning and baggying with a phony pony. The baggy kept my ends really moisturized, so I think that helped a lot.

I also condition washed regularly....

I cut my hair into that chin lenght bob at least five times in my life. As my hair would grow it would break off in the back middle section no matter what I did:wallbash::wallbash::wallbash:. So I'd have to cut it, again:ohwell:. I found this board and BHM and u guys saved my life. I had to balance my moisture n protien, correct porsity and basicly get rid of bout 5-6 inches. What gave me superior results was MTG w bun and baggy(Note to self: do this again!!!). I gradually cut off the nasty!!! ratty!! damaged!! stupid ends!! Sorry. Now my hair is a dream well at least compared to the HAM it used to b. I know what types of products (ingredients ex glycerine, castor oil etc) my hair liked and stuck to it.Oh and proper tech. is v important as well. MBL here I come!

When my hair was neck length, I wore straw-type sets using small magnetic rollers. It was my "signature style" and was both protective and low manipulation. At BSL, I still wear them, but they look like spiral curls now.
