LHCF Certified Stylist? (Piggybacking of Azul)

Hey Ladies,

I think that it is time that we got serious about getting a list together of LHCF Certified stylist for every major city (at least).

I just read Azul's experience with that makes me upset to know that there are hardly any real professional stylist out there. We spend years and alot of money to grow our hair and it takes one bad salon experience for that to go dowm the tubes /images/graemlins/swearing.gif /images/graemlins/whip.gif

I know that the ladies on this forum love and care about their hair and would love to go to a "professional" that truly feels the same way about hair care.

My schedule is pretty hectic right now but I promise you that I will start to visit some salons (maybe 2 per month)and watch the different stylist at work and post the pros and cons. I am sure eventually the good ones will shine through. But it is a start /images/graemlins/ohwell.gif

Well I had a great stylist, she just go too expensive for my tastes. But she was excellent. She listened, she wouldn't relax me every 4 weeks, like some want to. She also NEVER took calls when she was putting in a touch up and bases the entire scalp very carefully. She was also a certified color specialist. She is into healthy hair. She used to work in Robert Lewis Salon in Montgomery Mall (Bethesda, MD). Then she got her own shop in one of those salon plazas and her prices sky-rocketed. But I used to recommend her to every one I knew. She also used Affirm relaxers. Oh and when she trimmed, it was just that a TRIM. I need to find her information.

I think that we should start putting together a list of the stylist good and bad qualities and people can pick and choose what they are looking for. For example:

Macia from Lavarhairdesigns:

Pros:
Bases scalp well b/4 applying a relaxer
Applies relaxer w/o it being half way up you hair shaft
Rinses realxer well from hair
Neutralizes 3-4 times
Gives the best TRIMS (just tell her you from LHCF and she will know what's up).
I am always seen within 15 minutes of my arrival time (that has always been my personal experience)

Cons
She is kind of pricey
I want to start using a mild relaxer but she isn't all for it
Doesn't always use protectanton the hair b/4 relaxing, you have to remind her
I don't know if this in a Con, but I am not too familiar with the conditioner that she uses.

Grace from *** (I can't remember the name of her new place, but will find it and edit this post)

Pros:
Bases scalp well b/4 applying a relaxer
Applies relaxer w/o it being half way up you hair shaft
Rinses relaxer well from hair
Puts conditioner and lets it sit to restore PH after relaxer
Neutralizes well
When conditions, gives the best scalp massage
Gives the best TRIMS
Is a roller setting diva that rarely used heat (but let's you decide)
On-time and DOES NOT OVER BOOK
Keeps a book with all her clients and types of relaxers they use
Does (or did with me) a consultation FIRST before dealing with your hair
Sends b-day cards to clients (She is so sweet)
A christian (may not matter to some, but she is NOT Ghetto fab and rude)
In to healthy hair
Listens
Uses Affirm relaxers (and I think some other stuff too, but that's what I got with her)
Uses KeraCare products (I am sure others too, but she used this on me)
ETA: She will recommend another stylist if you are moving to another area if she knows one. When I moved back to Baltimore for a minute she told me of a great stylis there (but I never went to her)

Cons:
Pricey
New place is small (Unless she moved to a bigger spot)

That's about it. It should tell you something that I followed her to 3 different salons. My hair was thriving well when I was with her.

Thanks Kaddy, my sister lives in Baltimore and she just dying to find a good stylist. She still travels to New York to get her relaxers done.

Pros
*has affirm sensitive no-lye (which is hard 2 find)
*neutralizes/washes your hair GOOD after relaxing
*relaxes new growth only
*lets you know if you need a trim OR if you don't need a trim (doesn't just trim for the sake of trimming)
*uses conditioning products according to ur hair condition (ie. dry hair- use avocado conditioner - just a guess here)
*handles hair nicely
*reasonably priced
*Big Salon with about 25 Professional HOT dryers
*Alot of stylists to accomodate the clientele
*Very friendly atmosphere

ditto!!! /images/graemlins/up.gif
If I'd never found the LHCF, I would've never found Marcia to do my touchups. Thanks girls! /images/graemlins/wink.gif Now, if it comes down to Marcia not being able to do my touchups anymore (God forbid), then I guess that's when I'll have to let my momma do 'em (she used to do them before I found Marcia) or I'll start doin' them myself.

Tamika from the Natural Choice in Pittsburgh, PA is good. There is also another lady that is good but I dont remember her name. The Natural Choice focuses mainly on natural hair and braids. They are kind of pricey, but I like them the best out of the couple that I went to in Pittsburgh (Word of Mouf was not that great and Angel from One Park Place is good, but I do not like that area downtown). I liked the attitudes of the folks in the Natural Choice much better than in the other place. Word of Mouf was a clean little salon, but I found the stylist (I think her name was Tee or something like that) to be kind of dry...like she really didn't want to be there. I didnt like the way my hair looked either...and she was kind of expensive too.

Once I get my license I am going to open a business in one of those Salon Plaza location. That is such an excellent idea. There is a Salon Plaza in Rockville. It's the only one. IF you go to Salon Plaza it will list the names of the shops in each building. It may help you find the lady.

ok I have a few:

Issa's Fordham & 188th:
pros-
-really good Dominican blowouts
-inexpensive ($15-$17 for wash/set/bd)
-use Dominican products

Cons-
-If you do not have bone straight hair run for your life
-Does not base or protect
-Many stylists don't speak english- forget consultations
-high turnover rate of stylists

Anteqkua's hair on 42nd and Lex:
Pros-
-Claim to fame is she did Iman's hair for a while or smthg
-Clean professional salon
-will do consultations

Cons:
-$75 and up for a relaxer- more if your hair is long
-the other stylists there are no good but charge the same
-One stylist combed hair about the size of my palm out of my head and didn't say a thing until I turned around and saw it.
-"black bowl" brand relaxer
-no base or protection

Rosalie's on amsterdam and something
pros-
-typical Dominican salon
-used Affirm Mild
- mid priced
-not crowded

cons
-doesn't understand the concept of "not bone straight"
-

This is a great idea. It would be wonderful if we could get a specific section on this website for this listing.

Bump...bump...I was looking for a more recent thread of LHCF Stylists (anyone know where that thread is). I'm looking for a LHCF stylist in New Jersey.

Would love to hear more as well...Still in school though.

I'd want to add re: relaxers, someone who applies a product on previously relaxed hair so as to avoid overlapping of relaxers.

I wanna know what are the best tools good stylists use as well...

Bump, bump!

I am a certified licensed stylist but never really put it to use very much. ( yeah I know that doesn't really help.) Maybe I will put it to good use again one day.
