Ladies I need your help! What is the proper way to make a bun?!!

I recently joined Long Hair care Forum, but I've been reading the threads for sometime. Many people refer to hair buns as a protective style. However, when I place my hair in a bun, it seems to be pulling my hair. Normally to put my hair in a bun, I pull my hair back into a low ponytail. Then I slide that ponytail through a donut. While holding the donut in place I fold the hair over the donut and secure with a tight band. Again, I feel as if this is pulling my hair. I also feel like the rubber-band/ hair tie that holds the bun together damages my ends. What is the proper way to make a bun?! Please give suggestions:)

i do the same thing, except i dont use a filler/donut, and instead of using a tight band to secure the folded hair, i use bobby pins...and my pony tail isnt super tight....also i make sure my ends are moisturized.

If you feel like it's pulling, perhaps the donut is too big or you have wrapped the ponytail holder too tight. I only use the donut occasionally, but it should never pull.

Most of the time, I just make a ponytail and don't pull the ends all the way through on the last loop.

Will the constant use of bobby pins put to much stress on the individual strands of hairs?... I used to use Bobby pins daily and I stopped because I thought it might add to the breakage and damage.

i dont think so...if you have cheap bobby pins that twist and snag, they might...but generally bobby pins are less stressful on the hair because they're not tight and you're holding small sections together so its not the same amount of tension on your strands compared to a rubberband/ponytail holder...when you were using bobby pins, did you actually see breakage, or was it just a worry?

I do this too.

I do my buns in 2 parts.

1. I part my hair from ear to ear with 1/3 in the front and 2/3 in the back.
2. I braid the front french braid style towards the back.
3. I gather the back part and do a bun that incorporates the tail of the front braid.

This keeps the front edges from getting pulled. Granted, I have TBL locs, but it worked for me when I was loose natural too.

Also, only use cloth covered pony tail holders. If it's long enough, consider using hair sticks or forks. You can tuck in your ends to protect the ends. HTH

I gather my hair and fold it in half upwards, then I pull the two sides in together and put a scrunchie around it. SouthernTease style but with a scrunchie instead of a clip. Otherwise, it's a ponytail but I don't pull all the hair out on the last loop.

I use roll my hair over itself and use hair pins to secure the bun. If I'm in a rush, I use a scrunchie that I never twisted before and just rest it over it to hold it in place.

Also I don't use rubberbands for buns and my hair accessories are goody (it doesn't snag the hair).

Dlewis had loads of bun tutorials. As did Serachinelle (sp?)
Look on their blogs or do a search here

I use a banana clip to put hair into a ponytail and then you the fan method to spread by loose ponytail around the banana clip. I lastly use a chignon net ($1.09 for 2; each package lasts me about 2 weeks) to secure the fanned hair loosely to the banana clip. Outcome is juicy buns. BTW my hair is slightly below shoulder length

does anyone has a tutorial about a bun done on natural 4b/c hair ? My hair is so.... I can do a ponytail. I can do a puff but a real ponytail... :ohwell:

and I don't want to put tone of gel on my hair.

i've tried youtube, but haven't found a real vid by a 4b/c sista, always 3b/c or 4a.. african export is not exactly 4b, her hair texture is very far from mine.

I have a similar texture(4b crown/3c nape/4 something everything else) and even before my bkt I was able to do a faux bun with a banana clip. Pre bkt I had to do my banana clip ponytail on wet/very damp hair and then do the fan method. In the recent bun challenge there is a link to this fan method. The chignon net helps keep the bun together even if your hair is too short otherwise. I have a YouTube account but I don't post vids.
