LADIES I HAVE GIVEN UP!!!

Keep the faith...I have tried more vitamins, buns and conditioners than a little but my hair is a slow growing beast...I swear as long as I have been doing this I should have hair to my ankles(lol) but seriously, don't dwell too much on it..your hair has made OUTSTANDING growth from April until now..don't judge your hair by the growth that others are having because everyone is different; just take care of the hair on your head now and the rest will come..

I agree, I think your biggest concern right now should just be focused on retaining length, and the growth will come along /images/graemlins/smile.gif I know people with slow growing hair that has strong hair, and then i know others whose hair grows like wildfire but it breaks really easily. There is always something to work at but try not to make it into a chore.

Another member of the slow hair growth club here. My hair also grows 1/4" a month. My hair is close to my goal of brastrap (bottom of my shoulder blades) but it's taken me a looong time to get there. I just try to enjoy the journey of having healthy hair and not focus so much on the day to day length. Your hair is growing. That's obcious from the pics.

Isn't it possible that we each have our own hair threshold? My hair has never been beyond shoulder-length, but I have never made a conscious effort to grow it to a certain length.

Dont give up girl, have you tried increasing protein in your diet.
My hair growth rate has increased since I added protein shakes to my vitamin regimen.

Sure that might be true but the lengths that we traditionally tend to think of as long isn't. Like I said above any healthy person should be able to obtain bra strap. Unless you're really tall that is about 15 inches of length from the nape which is 2.5 years of growth. The average hair cycle is 4-7 years so everyone should be able to get there. I just think sometimes what works for some doesn't work for others, you just need to be willing to experiment until you find what works for you.

When I was younger (before 14) my hair was so jacked. I never saw hair in the comb yet it didn't get any longer. (This is why I always suspect there is more breakage going on that people realize.) I (and everyone else around me) thought I had "shitty" hair. Now my hair is longer and healthier than everyone who thought they had better hair than me. For me what worked was a year of braids.

Same here. /images/graemlins/cry3.gif Shooooo, I consider it a good month when I get 1/4".

Wolftrap co signing on the braids....I was like you I was ready to give up and cut a shorty...but then I put my micros in for 2 months and it helped me a lot. I saw some growth and my hair got super thick. I was able to extend my relaxer for 3.5 months. The most important thing I learned was how to not worry about my hair, how to just leave it alone braids help me to do this....now I am able to rock a bun for 2 weeks and not touch it or anything. So with that said get the braids not to tight, not only will you see some growth but it will also help ease your mine /images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I am too new to the boards to give advise but DAMN!!!!! look at the support you are getting! The support you are getting is a good enough reason in itself not to give up!!!!!

I don't think you should give up. It may take awhile for you hair to grow. Try not to measure your hair for a couple of months and see how that works. Sorry your madd!

Exactly! Black folks have their own figures on what they consider "long hair". Bra-strap hair is not long!! There are some people that think hair that's long enough to go into a ponytail is long. /images/graemlins/ohwell.gif

usually the minute you start obsessing is the minute your hair growth takes off. focus on something else and maintain a simple regimen, and you;'ll be surprised at the growth you'll have months down the road. have patience. attitude is everything. get some braids like instinct told you (not micros).

Yup, I agree the thing to do is to stop thinking about it for a while and keep on living your life. I recall some years back (long before I discovered hair boards!) I was trying to do my hair and got irritated because it wouldn't go into the style that I wanted. Well, after several minutes of tussling with it I realized that the reason it wouldn't work is because it had grown out, lol.
Right now my hair is creeping along at a snails pace too, but I figure it will either grow or not *shrug* either way I'm happy with what I've got. Keeping your hair healthy is an accomplishment in itself which you should congratulate yourself for! It'll grow in it's own time.

How often do you relax your hair? I almost gave up when I was thinking my hair wasn't growing. I understand how you feel. I started doing more things to my hair when I joined this forum and saw it wasnt helping then I stayed away from the forum for about a month or so. I did this so I wouldn't be obsess with my hair and start to feel bad because of my impatience. But I came back after finally finding a regime that worked for my hair and realizing I must have patience. When I started extending my relaxers, I noticed a big difference in the length of my hair. I changed from relaxing every 4-6 weeks to every 12 weeks.

Also, how often do you wash, style, or whatever else you do to your hair? Whatever you do, keep it at a minimum...basically just leave your hair alone! /images/graemlins/wink.gif I try not to think about my hair as far as length goes until the next time I relax my hair. That's when I see how long it has gotten. I also just wash and condition my hair every 2-3 weeks so I do not manipulate it so much. Manipulation for MY hair makes it prone to breakage which means length is not retained. I style my hair (rollerset) every 2 weeks and leave it alone. I may keep it in a bun during the second week after I washed and styled my hair.
It all takes time and patience. I'm sure you'll be back occassionally for hair tips. That's what I do. Hope that helps and keep taking good care of your hair! /images/graemlins/antlers.gif

Wow, Poohbear! That's great that you're extending your relaxers now. I remember your posts before where you were thinking you couldn't do it. Way to go! /images/graemlins/clap.gif

thanks! from Jul to Oct was the first time I ever did it and I do see a difference. even though the relaxer did not straighten my hair all the way, i still notice a significant amount of growth which i like to see. im not saying extending relaxers makes your hair grow faster, i just notice more growth after waiting so long, dealing with shrinkage, and then finally getting a relaxer. /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Wolftrap,I am sorry that you are feeling this way. All the ladies have been right,we can ALL have bra strap lenght hair. I found that my hair grew the longest, when I paid it no mind.

Thanks ladies for all of your support /images/graemlins/kisses.gif you guys have made me feel a lot better about this hair thing. I am still going to be on the boards but I am not going to obsess about my hair growth anymore. In January when I get the braids I will see what happens after that. I see that a lot of you got over your humps using braids so this may be a good thing for me to try and the fact that I wont see my hair for a while will also help me a lot. I am at the point like I am doing everything and I am still not getting anything /images/graemlins/whyme.gif but I do believe braids will help me in the long run.

Poohbear-I wash my hair every 3 days, if I go any longer than that I am scratching my hair to death and it is filthy. I also touch up every 9 weeks.

I know how you feel wolf, thats another reason im always quick to put braids in my hair so i dont have to deal w/it for a long time so that i dont get so concerned w/it and it will grow, which it does so maybe you can jsut do that for a few months or a year or so. I was thinking by sept i woudl be collar bone length on the sides but im still not, but then again i had to remind myself thats because i CUT about an inch or so off because i was getting rid of the permed ends and now my NATURAL hair is at the length that my permed ends were, so my hair HAS grown but its just that its another texture now. But i still keep on. I feel the 2 key things of better haircare, besides from the 'norm' that we were use to years ago b4 we all found this board, is to have PERSISTENCE and PATIENCE. Those to me are just the 2 key things in this journey. Yes you get discouraged form looking at all those other pictures of others gaining so much growth in a year or less than and you seem to be at the saaaame ooooold lousy length, but give it time and you'll have it too. Gotta have the patience to keep on being persistent at trying and while you are trying and trying things out you have to have the patience for it.(sound like some guru or something. LMBO)

Also, have you ever thought about trying a different route or growing your hair. Meaning go natural, texturized or so? Or maybe wear scarfs and/or hats or wear wigs maybe. Just something else you can think of doing.

You know what I think braids are a good solution for you. For one, you're no longer going to be focusing on how fast your hair is growing and secondly, they will serve as a protective style that you won't manipulate that much and will also help preserve your growth. Go ahead; take your break, but don’t give up, it takes time!

I have given up on my quest for bra strap length hair. Nothing seems to be aiding in my growth. I have been using GNC Ultranourishair vitamins since January and I started B Complex about 2 months ago. I have been surging for about 5 months and starting using WGO 2 months ago and also have worn my hair faithfully in a bun for the past 2 months. I was going to get braids this past weekend but instead I said let me get a touch up and see if I have made any progress. To my disappointment I have made VERY LITTLE progress. The extra things I have been doing have not helped. My September to November results I might as well had been putting spit on my hair cuz all that extra stuff sure didnt' give me any growth. In 2 months it looks like my hair grew a 1/2 inch. and the previous picture before that I measured and it was the exact same length as before. So I have decided to get my hair braided in January but I am no longer actively on this quest for longer hair. If it comes it comes if it doesn't then it doesn't. So I am spending less and less time on teh Hair Discussion boards and more time in the other forums. So anyway ladies thanks for the tips and support on the hair thing maybe I will post some more pics a few months from now but right now I am no longer on this quest with you guys so no more vitamins, surge and whatever else I was dong. I posted new pics in my progress section but those will be the last for a lonnggg time.

Dear Wolftrap, I understand how you feel, because I have been there for many many years. When I had my hair curly permed, it grew the longest collarbone length, but when it was relaxed, it never got longer than chin length, any longer and I would suffer from thin ends "see through ends". You have probably got hair like me, it breaks but it is very difficult to see the breakage, because the hair just dissolves. So I kept my hair short for a very long time, I was convinced my hair very slow growth and a life span of two years, (how I worked that out because it would get to below my chin and stop growing, if it grew any further, it suffered from thin ends). It was only when I started to read Cathy Howse's book and I started washing my hair on a regular basis, I remember why I was able to retain length, also I stopped relaxing, then I tried texturising, still my hair would break after a certain length, so I decided to put my hair in buntu knots and flat twists, stop the relaxing and texturising and I found rinsing on a daily basis, taking my supplements, but hair grew very fast. I would suggest that you put your hair in braids for two months or so, which you are doing is a very good step, continue with your vitamins and continue surging every day, even twice a day. When the two months is up, continue braiding or whatever and trim off your relaxed ends until you have your hair natural, don't do the big chop. I can bet you bottom dollar, you will achieve more growth, than you have ever had. You will be able to get to bra length and beyond. Rinse your hair in your braids, put a stocking over your hair, make a conditioning rinse with glycerine, rosewater and conditioner, also add water to dissolve, then wrap your hair in a towel, to soak up the excess moisture, mix castor oil, wild growth oil and virgin olive oil with a little aloe vera gel and put in your roots after you have surged your roots and make a braid spray of rosemary essential oil, rosewater, distilled water, glycerine and a little bit of aloe vera gel to keep your braid moisturised. I will guarantee that within a month, your hair will be growing. You will be surprised, any more help, please pm me, but don't give up your quest.

Wolftrap,

I haven't read all the responses, but a good attitude can take you very far. Don't be a micro-manager to your hair and stay optimistic. Try thinking good thoughts about your hair. Nothing good comes to mind when I think of or hear the word SPIT. /images/graemlins/confused.gif Not only can you speak defeat but you can also think defeat over yourself. Be positive and patient.
