My friend sent me a text just now saying that she just got her hair pressed and was talking to the lady doing it. Here is the message (brace yourself):

I got my hair pressed. It was a kitchen job so its not popping. But it got my roots extra straight. The lady who did it told me I wash too much. I told her about cowashing and she said it's a bad idea. She said black women in the winter months should wash their hair once a month!!!! Anything else is madness. I told her that i used to cowash and she said that's why i didn't see any change. I washed my hair before my oils could accumulate. But my roots were thick as hell. Overall though ima try washing my hair less frequently and see what happens. And she said we shouldn't go off what we see on the boards. All we gonna do is spend money and that anything will start to work if you use it long enough.

My Reply: HAHA! What works for her doesn't work for everyone. There are natural ladies who wash their hair once a month and others who don't. It depends on what works for YOUR hair. So you mean that if I use white rain conditioner long enough as a deep conditioner it will start to work?

Friend: I'm guessing so. But she said castor oil will grow hair. A southern remedy.

Well folks, there you have it. She wasn't cowashing more than once a week, if that and shampooed every other week. Also, her hair had a little swing at the end but no swang (she's a natural 3b). I agree with the cowashing winter months thing because wet hair = sick.
I'm no hair guru but I wonder if the hairdresser know's about protein-moisture balance, aphogee-2min before neutralizing (I taught mine about that one b4 i switched to DIY :look:). How would she feel if i told her that i use mn?!?! :rofl:
This just in: the woman used royal crown grease and bb's castor oil moisturizer. Where's the heat protectant? :naughty:

If you give or do your own presses, what do you use? And for reasons like this situation is why I'm DIY-ing as much as I can because me and the hairdresser would argue at every visit. :rolleyes:

This is the exact reason I went back to doing my own hair.

When I pressed I NEVER used hair grease. I can just see her frying and sizzling your friend's hair as she did it.

SMH - Honestly I really do wonder about the sanity of some of these people we allow to touch our hair ???

Yeah before I knew better I had a hairdresser who used to tell me that if I used Brown gel it would straighten my texture... because get this... it has relaxer in it. LOL.

Oh and another one who told me that it was perfectly ok for my hair to "train" to a press and that the burning smell I was smelling and the smoke I was seeing was just my hair "learning how to lay down"....

Oh yeah and another one who told me that used to braid my hair so tight that I would have white bumps on my scalp and she would tell me "dont worry thats what grows your hair... yo have to pull it for it to grow".

Yeah... people who do hair in kitchens sure do know a lot about hair hunh?

Wow. What a mess! Grease and a hot comb?!?! All I use is a heat protectant when I flat iron (sometimes 2: a leave in and then a serum). I don't press. Not because I am against it but because I don't know how! Also I am scared of no temperature control. I hope she didn't fry her hair!! Anything less than a month is madness? What about fine haired black ladies who will look like rats drowned in oil if they only washed their hair once a month?

Here is what I say to someone who is telling me something I know will not and does not work for me......Thank you for sharing. :grin:

:lachen::lachen::lachen:

Just friggin priceless - NEVA gain will these charlatans come within an inch of my head. I can DC and style rings around these idiots and I have no formal training.

The truth is as women can sometimes be cheap and so if you pay peanuts you get the monkey as the old adage goes. Black hair often takes time and patience and these shocking stylists have made up little lies and myths to cut down that TLC time and keep that till ringing... case in point why wash and DC and use heat protectant when you can just fry someones hair (quite literally)? I mean any fool knows that a press looks good on freshly washed and conditioned hair.

they just lazy !

I heard the sizzle there.

As for the type of pressing creme I use, I use Dudley's Pressing Oil along with a heat protectant.

I know all stylists aren't like this one, but I've heard so many horror stories that it really makes me wonder what they teach in hair school? I'm pretty much a DIYer, but the stylist I went to for years was pretty decent--yet and still there are ladies in this forum who know TONS more than she did. SMH...:nono:

oh my lord!!!!:lachen::lachen::lachen:

The level of mythology, misinformation and downright ignorance to healthy hair care in our community really saddens me:nono:

We really have to do our best to pay it forward yall....seriously.

If theres one thing I want to change its for black women to know they can wash their hair whenever they please.

Don't be going on those boards trying to learn how to take care of your own hair.

smh...what a shame. my brother and i were talking just a few hours ago about how people are trained from a young age that washing too often supposedly equals disaster, although my hair has done nothing but GROW since i began washing once a week (or more).

i cowashed last winter, i just did it at night and put my hair in flat twists instead of doing a WNG like i did in the summer months.

to press my sister's hair, i DC'd overnight, then rinsed and added cantu shea butter leave-in to damp hair, braided it up and dried it under a hooded dryer, then added chi silk infusion only. it turned out nice and shiny (and swangy). grease and a hot comb? my heart aches for her.

What in the world is wrong with people? People would just rather create their own myths than go out to find the truth! Pure laziness. :nono:
My goal is to help girls with haircare in whatever way I can. I'm tired of these chilluns walkin around like "who did it and what for" and "who shot john".

OK THAT"S CRAZY.. and even more crazy if she listens to her and not you (op)!

And what is SMH (sorry ladies)?TIA.

I know! I'm trying my best to give her as much information as I can :sad:

....i don't understand all these problems with stylists. i have never let anyone touch my hair who doesn't understand the basics. i pay too much for some nonsense.
