I got a relaxer after about not relaxing for two years
now i feel like it was the worst step to make
my hair has been braking so bad. I have never seen this much hair come out of my head before. do you guys know what could help with the breakage?

thanks

Probably a good protein treatment. Many board suggestions have been Nexxus Emergencee, Dudley's DRC, and Aphogee. Do a search on protein treatments and you'll get tons of information. Also, be sure to follow up all protein with a good moisturizing conditioner.

Good luck and sorry to hear about your breakage. Please let us know how things work out

I agree with miss brown, use a good protein treatment followed by at least 30 minutes with a good moisturizing deep conditioning treatment. I would also follow up with weekly deep conditioning treatments. Moisturize at night and detangle gently using a wide tooth comb.

Where did u get your relaxer and what type of relaxer did u get done?

Goodluck and I am sorry about the breakage. But keep moisturizing and your hair will be back to its healthy state in no time.

thanks, caramelkiss
I got my relaxer done at my regular hair dresser, but his assistant put the relaxer in, I was so skeptical b/c I had not done this in about 2 years, I figured that since I now know how to take better care of my hair after visiting this forum, that I would be able to care for relaxed hair. My hair has grown so much since joining this forum, that you can just imagine my dissapointment. Now I dont know if to go ahead and try going natural again, or just try to fix the damage. I don't know what kind of relaxer it was, but my hair was extremly straight in no time.

I am going to get a trim next week and I wonder if I should do an aphogee treatment before next friday.

what do you guys think

by the way I really Love this forum, again I have learned so much about my hair from you ladies, I sometime think that Iam obsessed with my hair, every hair counts

Hi Zgirl,

If your hair is breaking very badly don't wait to do a protein treatment, do it now! Relaxers dry your hair out even more than it naturally is and what you're experiencing is breakage do to that excessive dryness.

I think that before you cut your hair to go natural again, try treating it first to see what happens. You may be able to get the breakage under control and if that doesn't work, then you can cut it. Good luck to you!

When I hear of a person's hair breaking badly after a relaxer (especially someone who knows how to take care of their hair) I wonder if it was neutrilized (sp?) properly. If not this would explain the breakage.

Asha, that always is the first thing that comes to my mind too. I would neutralize again, then do a protein treament (Aphogee or DRC) then follow up with a good moisturizer. Also, you need to develop a regimen for your relaxed hair now, continue to condition your hair really well and it will be fine. Best to you and don't be discouraged.

Thanks nita4, unfortunately i dont know if she neutralized it properly, I will try that again and see

Zgirl, I'm sure by following the suggestions given by all these wonderful ladies your hair will be just fine. Like nita4 said, after you deal with the initial breakage you must develop a regimen. What was your routine before you relaxed?

Zgirl, the only I mention this is because it happened to me. I don't want to scare you or anyone else, but we all know that not neutralizing properly will take your hair out. So, doing it again definately won't hurt. Let it sit a while, rinse and then condition.

It could also be the change from natural to relaxed hair too. It might not be anything serious at all, but deal with the breakage for now and it will be fine - you'll see.

yea it could be, before i was relaxed, I would wash w/shampoo once a week, deep condition for 20min with heat and then put a moisturinzing conditioner in. I moisturize day and night and cover my hair with a silk scarf at night. I like straight hair so every other week i would straighten with my flat iron, it would look nice, but since it is getting cold, I did not want to put so much heat in my hair and I wanted to stop blowdrying. My main reasons for the relaxer.

I will follow your advise and let you guys know how it workes out.
