I'm talking about going longer than 2-3 months without a trim!

Ladies I wear my hair up 85% of the time (at work its up every day only down if i'm going out), I deep cond twice per week and I air dry. The only time I use heat is when I am going out to a party or something and I blowdry (for about 3 minutes to straighten) with a round my brush my ALREADY ARIDIED HAIR, so thats it MINIMAL heat, hair is up most of the time, regular deep cond but my ends still look raggedy after 10 wks! I'm going for a steam and a trim tonight!

Is it just me or does anyone else get this problem despite a high standard hair care regime? :perplexed I wonder how u ladies who can go months on end without a trim do it, I mean does a girl have to wear her hair in a bun PERMANENTLY night and day to not have split ends? I mean do u go partying in buns too???

I wonder too...I think that some people do not care how their ends look because they may wear it up all the time

I just can't leave teh scissors alone :(

HOW are you airdrying? I know it wasn't until I air dried with my ends braided that my ends started looking better. A little shea butter or cholestoral on the ends when deep conditioning helped tremendously, too.

I agree. I coat my ends with WGO and then braid my hair when I air dry. This keeps the ends moisurized and smooth

As long as you keep your ends moisturize then they should be fine. I find that putting Frizz Ease on my hair after I was works best for me. I mean before I use any other type of leave-ins.

I think a couple of things are happening - one is that we've been brainwashed for so long about regular trimming that we feel like we are really not caring for our hair unless we do. The next is because we air dry our ends look crinkly when they are not so we think they are bad and we need to trim them off.

The second to last relaxer I got, I got a trim because I thought my ends were looking raggedy. My stylist did a great job, very gentle, took off very liitle but still it was a trim. The last time I got a relaxer I said OK- no trim I want to see how my ends look a few days after the touch up and you know what? They were fine. It make me realize that I didnt need to trim as often as I was.

The same thing goes for how often to get a relaxer and what to do when your hair is breaking. Earlier this year before I joined LHCF I got a BC because I was frustrated with the breaking. I am so mad now because I realize I didnt have to if I had the knowledge that I needed to moisturize more and do a protein treatment.

So keep this in mind before you trim. Good Luck

How do you steam your ends? I've been searching everywhere for the technique. My ends are sooooo dry, not split though. They look so raggedy I'm thinking about just cutting about 2-3 inches off and going from there. What does the steaming do, exactly?

I am exactly the same way. When I first arrived in the LHCF I tried stretching my trims because well, everyone seemed to be doing it. I went about 12 weeks without trims (only a minor dusting during that time) and by then my hair looked TERRIBLE! Some of us just have to get the trims more so than others. It's like a necessary evil. I wear my hair up about 85% of the time too so it's not like my ends are exposed or anything. And yes, I've got the S-curl, the shea butter and several more of those delightful concoctions that do wonders for ends. But nothing works for me like a good ol' fashioned trim.

I've found that the only way I can stretch my trims is by Completely Eliminating Heat. I got a short hair cut last January, and prior to that I was a religious 6-8 week trimmer. I hated the haircut so much that I vowed to grow it out, so I didn't trim or use heat for 6 months and I was SOOO surprised with the results. I didn't always use protective styles, I used braids, but sometime I just pinned my own hair up in updos with the ends exposed...

When I went for my first trim in July the stylist took off the amount she would have normally, which is barely anything... I tried to stretch my trims again from there, but the use of heat (although minimal) messed my ends up so I had to trim again in early October (2.5 months later).

So I'm giving up heat again...

I say it's all in the products your using. My ends weren't too bad but the last 1/2 of an inch wouldn't dry w/o looking frizzy until I started shampooing w/Nexxus Therapee, I didn't notice until my second time using it and I airdried w/a little Nexxus Humectress as my leave-in. I know my ends were no longer looking thirsty after that, even though I was a 2-3 x's a day moisturizer w/the oils and the butters, but nothing showed improvement like my Nexxus. :D

Amen to what BWE said, Nexxus changed the split end game for me too. I used to have to trim with every relaxer, but once I started doing my own hair, that wasn't necessary anymore....I dusted in September, but I haven't had a trim since February. I don't have any issues with my ends lookin awful either. I agree that sealing the ends up w/ something before they dry is necessary to keep them from lookin dry & split. And the elimination of direct heat is a major help too. My hair has not seen a flat iron since June, and my hair, especially my ends, is soooooo grateful for the break.

I'm still confused as to why I seem to be the only person who considers a dusting a trim. Isn't the same thing? With a trim, you are only "cutting" off a couple of centimeters or inch off. Either way, scissors are still coming into contact with your hair.

I say this because until recently, when people on this board would say they never got a trim and then say they got a dusting , I would be racking my brain trying to figure it all out. I would be sooo confused. :dizzy:

It seems that I have always been getting "dustings" because the stylist would only cut off a very minimal amount. I get this about every 3 months. But I always refer to it as a trim when I ask her for it. The stylist "trims" according to the amount of uneveness I have and I usually don't have much uneveness so it happens to come out to a "dusting"..... but if it needs to be cut off more, then so be it. I never compromise the health of my ends for the sake of length.

Even after all this, I'm still confused  .... so my question is, because I happen to get a small amount of hair cut off due to taking good care of my ends, I should say I got a dusting and not a trim??? Is this what people mean when they say they haven't gotten a "trim" in a year or something???? To me, a dusting is a trim b/c the word trim itself means cuttng off a small amount but it can simply vary. Am I wrong? I am still confusing things?

I airdry in two braids, I don't put anything on the ends, just leave in conditioner may try the shea butter idea a try, thanks.

I steam my whole head not just the ends, at the hairdresser, she puts the conditoner on then a plastic cap over my head and puts me under the steamer. Its another form of deep conditioning the steam helps the conditioner to penetrate into the hair better then dry air would because its wet I suppose. I don't do it very often though as I would like because its quite expensive, I usually just do it on the same day as my relaxer.

At least its not just me then. :)
