IV Fluids: The Most Growth Ever

Okay Ladies,

I have a question for all of you. About a year ago I was in the hospital for almost a month due to an appendectomy. I spent about 2 weeks of that month attached to an IV receiving IV fluids. While still in the hospital the nurses kept raving about my nails and skin. I thought they were crazy because I was in such bad shape.

When I got home, I noticed my skin was bright and glowing, my nails were long and thick and my hair had grown. Over the next four months my hair grew past shoulder length. Mind you, I was wearing an earlobe length bob when I entered the hospital. Everyone noticed the growth and attributed it to the IV fluids. I asked a nurse friend and she also attributed it to that.

So, I started doing research to figure out what goes into IV fluids and if it could be duplicated. I found some ingrdients online and found out that the fluid mostly contains electrolytes. Which can be found in pedialyte and in other forms. I have not been able to duplicate the results and I don't have the resources or time to do more in depth research.

My question to you ladies is whether any of you have experienced anything similar? Do you think this was really caused by the fluids? Do you think there is a way to duplicate the results? Are IV fluids offered to the general public? Could they be as affective if taken orally? I know this is a lot to take in, but this has been puzzling me for a year.

I have listed the common components of IV fluids below:

Common IV Solutions Solution Glucose (g/L) Na+ K+ Ca+2 Cl- Lactate PO4-3 Mg+2
5% Dextrose (D5W) 50 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
10% Dextrose (D10W) 100 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
Normal Saline (NS) 0 154 0 0 154 0 0 0
D5NS 50 154 0 0 154 0 0 0
D5½NS 50 77 0 0 77 0 0 0
0.2% NS 0 31 0 0 31 0 0 0
3% NaCl 0 513 0 0 513 0 0 0
Ringer's Lactate (LR) 0 130 4 3 109 28 0 0
D5LR 50 130 4 3 109 28 0 0
D10 E#48 100 30 15 0 20 25 3 3
D5 E#48 50 25 20 0 22 23 3 3
D10 E#75 100 57 35 0 40 25 12 6
D6 E#75 60 40 40 0 35 20 15 0

Note: Glucose in g/L; all ions in mEq/L.

I'm no expert, but I can only think it's just a concentrated form of vitamins. Liquid vitamins absorb into your system quicker than pills. Most of the IV fluid is mostly water, so why not try drinking more water? Experts say drinking water is great for skin and nails. You never know..... ;)

Precisely!! I started drinking so much water that I go to the bathroom at least 10 x's a day. I highly recommend drinking water, but, again, I have not seen the same results.

I'm not sure if it's the fluid per se as the ones you listed just contain various concentrations of dextrose and sodium others have various electrolytes which are already present in your body (i.e - sodium, potassium). Do you know what was added to your IV fluids or were you just receiving hydration? Do you know which bags were hung on you? I'm interested in knowing too!

It was basically sugar water. When you drink water you are going to naturally appear and be healthy. Nothing surprising. Most people DO NOT drink enough water, that's all.

Wow...I would never have thought of IV fluids contributing to hair growth or let alone nail growth. I would think if this was true it would come from your body not becoming dehydrated. Its like drinking a LOT of water on a daily basis..hmmm, very interesting topic.

Natrlchallange is right, it's just the fact that your body was taking in more water and vitamins. The concentration of salt, sugar, minerals, etc., is actually quite lower than people think in IV fluids. It's more water than anything else. Most people when in the hospital are not going to eat or drink as much as the would at home due to pain, immobility, lack of orientation, etc. So, IV fluids are basically just given to keep the body hydrated and replace the essential nutrients, elements and vitamins that would ordinarily be provided by foods and liquids. You wouldn't really gain anything by ingesting the fluids like the ones that are contained in IV's if you are eating correctly, taking a multiple vitamin and drinking the RDA of water/fluids.

To my knowledge, there is no oral concentration of fluid that would be comparable to IV solutions. Drinks like Gatorade, Pedialyte, etc., replace missing electrolytes as would Lactated Ringers, but in a lower, digestable concentration.

Your body's only going to use exactly what it needs out of your diet to keep the system running at optimal function. If you're already getting enough of the vitamins, liquids, etc. that your body needs, all the extra stuff will just be unused and excreted. HTH!!!! :) :)

I agree with every one. Especially the fact that the IV was putting fluids into your body constantly, so you were probably pretty hydrated.

Wow!! Lot's of great thoughts and advice. I'm not sure what was in my bag of fluid, but I guess the constant amount of electrolytes, vitamins and whatever else was in my IV bag contributed to my skin, nails and hair. I'm still curious about duplicating the fluids. Perhaps drinks like Gatorade and Pedialyte are a good way of coming close.

I think that's probably the best way to go. Some of the IV fluids we use are designed only to mimic the blood (same pH, elements, proteins, etc.), and wouldn't be orally digestable, which has the potential to make you sick and that you definitely don't want.

I was in the hospital a total of 15 days within one month's time. 9 days the first time, and 6 days two weeks later. This is an interesting post, because I thought it was the oxygen that sky-rocketed my hair growth (I was on an O2 mask for most of the time because I had pneumonia in both lungs and one lung was partially collapsed).

So, it may have been the IV fluids. They overloaded me so much on fluids the first stay that they had to give me Lasix (a potent diuretic) to get the fluid off. I had so much fluid on me that I gained 19 pounds in water weight. Went in weighing 120, and while there before the diuresis weighed 139. Anyhow, during that relaxer stretch, I had 3 inches of new growth in 12 weeks.

I gotta put my two cents in. Be careful to NOT overdue the gatorade or those types of drinks. Those are designed to replenish what you use through vigorous activity. If you take in too much sodium and potassium or other electrolytes when you don't need to, you can end up with all kinds of probs, for instance muscle problems and remember your heart is technically a muscle.

Have you tried Hair vitamins? These may be a bit safer. I would think if you take them and increase your water intake, you may get similar results.

ITA! I know all about the cardiac arrhythmias and what not that can result from an improper (in this case being too much) balance of electrolytes, from being a former nursing student.

It's funny that you mention this because this past November, I donated a kidney to my dad and afterwards people were commenting a lot on how my skin looked so good and that I had a glow. It was especially said when I went back to work and people saw me who hadn't seen me in a few weeks commented on it. One woman asked me if I'd had some kind of chemical peel!

The oxygen probably did play a part in your hair growth. Increased oxygenation will allow the body to regenerate cells faster and allow for increased blood flow. I was forever in the hospital when I was little and had to be placed in oxygen tents. By middle school, my hair was waist length. I know it wasn't all do to the O2, but I do believe it played a part.

LOL! I was in the hospital a lot when I was younger, and one time I was really sick and I was in the hospital for about 2 weeks. This girl at school said, "Wow, you look better after being in the hospital than you did before." I didn't know why she said that, but your post made me think back on that comment.

AWWW LAWD....now a lot of LHCF ladies are going to MIA because they'll be in the hospital due to mysterious accidents.... :p

OOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH MY LAWD!!!!!!!! I AM SOOOOOOOO LAUGHING MY BUTT OFF RIGHT NOW, AT THAT ONE!!!!

Or maybe the higher consumption of gaterade will prompt us to exercise more since drinking a lot gaterade without exercising isn't a good idea. ;) Our hair would really thrive then.

I agree I looked so pretty when I came out the hospital. I was only there for one night but I got loaded on iv fluids.

Appendicitis is caused by infection and bacteria in the appendix. Perhaps getting rid of the source of the infection helped get you back on track.

...the fake doctor is now signing off.

True. But even after my second stay in the hospital, weeks after the appendectomy and antibiotics, I was still seeing the affects of the fluids. The growth of my hair and nails and the condition of my skin lasted a few months. I tried drinking Pedialyte, but that ish is nasty.
