Is this a lot of hair in the brush on wash day?

I have pretty much this same amount if I shampoo every three or more days. Not all that much comes out during the actual shampoo because I only comb through it with a jilbere.

It doesn't look like that much to me. (I also keep an eye on hair lost due to washing and stylng).

It depends on your normal amount. For me that would be to much, because my normal isn't so much. I get that amount after breaking down my braids after 4 weeks.

Yet I know some who get that every wash.

So if your normal is that much then it isn't alot. If it isn't then maybe you need to revamp, re-evaluate your regi and see what is going on.

Keep us posted :)

I have that much when I wash at home unless newly relaxed. Try a big tooth comb. Also go to the beauty parlor and see if they get the same results using your products. If they do chances it may be your products or it's your norm. Then try a different product next time or use theirs to see if less hair.

I would like to get it straight myself but I do notice way less hair when they do it. I am careful not to tangle during wash though.

How about ou take it out of the ball and see which ones have the ball on the tip. That is really the only way to tell if its shed or breakage

hmmmmm. im not sure. i know i pretty consistently have that same amount of hair when i detangle with a denman after a shampoo. it seems normal to me because im used to it, but idk if its a lot objectively... i have been wondering lately if im losing too much hair when i shampoo.

i used to think my hair was thick but now after seeing how thin/flat it can get when its straightened while natural i hesitate to say that still

I'm sorry that is a lot. Like another poster mentioned above. Check if it is shedding or breakage and regulate this asap. I want you to retain all of your growth.

so do you guys think i should wash more frequently? i already feel like at two or three times i already wash too frequently a week. but my hair starts to stiffen and harden after a couple days once the "freshness" of the shampoo wears off. im always in the gym sweating pretty regularly. i dont know that im having a protein/porosity/moisture problem because why my hair dries after a wash it feels perfectly fine.

Washing more frequently wouldn't help things, it may make things worse because for some it's too much manipulation. It doesn't seem your hair can handle that so I would look into a low manipulation regimen.

I have low mani regimen and it has been my way to retain length. I wash no more than once a week.....every two weeks had been my regimen for the longest time until I started wearing my hair curly most of the time.

yeah, im just not sure what exactly the issue is or what would fix it. i suggested washing my often because it seems i only have problems with it when i leave it alone and let it mat and tangle for a couple days. i suspect frequent washing is too much manipulation but my hair just feels like crap in between washing.

i use giovanni smooth as silk which apparently is a protein shampoo and i might clarify once every other week.

I get about this amount on my wash days, which are every 2 weeks although I've noticed a steady decline since I made a change in my regimen. I don't know how long your hair is but if you've never had this much before then I'd say it's not normal.

You need to reduce the amount of times you are washing. You are washing your hair with shampoo this often? You should try just rinsing your hair with water a few times a week instead if you must wash your hair frequently because you are working out.

Shampoo dries your hair out, especially the ones with sulfates in them. Also, maybe you need to go easy on the brushes. The brushes can be prematurely pulling your hair out. Try finger detangling instead. Just to share, I detangle my hair at the most, twice a month, but on average, about once a month, and wash maybe once or twice a month. If I was sweating and working out (in which I need to do woof :look:) I would try to increase it but overall, you do not want to use shampoo as often as you do....

^^ agree with her! maybe since your hair likes water just rinse it when you shower and shampoo a little less. i got one shampoo called dr miracle 2in1 tingling and only lost 2 strands of hair today with a find tooth comb!! that denman type of brush takes out huge amounts of hair like you posted. i think it's a bad brush.

I suggest henna. Since I started I hardly shed at all. I haven't had a ball of hair since. It also could be the msm supplements as well. It seems like a lot of shedding but if it doesn't seem noticably thinner to you thrn try not to worry.

I think you should put down the denman. I also wash twice a week, with non-sulfate shampoo, and lose significantly less than that. But I notice that I lose a LOT more if I use a denman. Also, if the smooth as silk is a protein shampoo, make sure you're incorporating enough moisture to counteract it.

Also, you mentioned that your hair starts to get hard and stiff a few days after washing. What are you using for daily M&S?

nooooooooo!!! iwud suggest washing less frequently...like 1x/week or even 1x every 2 weeks....or co-wash if u must...ithink ur hair may really benefit from a low manipulation reggie or a hide your hair challenge....the amount of hair ur losing would be ok if u washed 1x a week...but to get that much breakage every 3 days reallly adds up...hth

I'd try to detangle with something other than the Denman brush. I lose a lot of hair with that thing, so it's no longer in my rotation, especially when my hair is wet.

I agree with switching detangling tools...I'm sure you would loose a lot less hair with a wide tooth comb or a tangle teezer :yep:

I agree with the other posters who think that's too much hair. Here are my recommendations:
- Shampoo less (once a week or even every two weeks) and co-wash to freshen your scalp and hair
- Use a wide-tooth comb for detangling; save the Denman for defining curls only after detangling
- Try henna once a month; it can stop shedding and breakage

From the afro pic you attached (which is beautiful btw :)) your hair seems thick but your individual strands seem very fine.

Yours looks a lot like my oldest DD's hair, which responds very well to regular and consistent protein usage. This has greatly reduced her breakage, which her strands are very prone to.

Outside of the shampoo, what other protein-based products are you using?
