Is there any one that had short hair most of your life thinking it would not grow?

I was just thinking about all the ladies that have had short hair most of their life thinking it would not grow long but now your hair is long. Could you tell me what you did to get your hair long and healthy. Right now my hair is short with a s-curl (hate I did it) and about a 1/2 of ng. I am trying to go all natural without doing the bc. If someone could point me in the right direction that would be great. Yes, ladies I am a newbie and this is just my second real post. I would love to do the press and curl, because I love the look. I would love to hear from ladies that would have never dream their hair would get that long and now it is, and what you did to get there without your hair fallin out all over the place. Pics would be nice too.

Yes, I have. Now, I now my hair didn't grow because I wasn't taken care of it.

Re: Is there any one that had short hair most of your life thinking it would not grow

I never felt like my hair would grow..I mean my hair was always EL and above...my stylist even told me..."Some people's hair doesn't grow long..what hapens..is that once your hair reaches a certain it will start to break!".

I belived that mess!!!

What has helped my growth..is that I co-wash..seal & moisturize..and keep my hair pinned up...

My hair has been SL my whole life. I still hoped my hair would grow, but I had doubts. I still have doubts. But, I am not going to stop trying.

I don't use any topical growth aid...I'm too lazy!!:lachen::lachen:

But I take 5,000mcg of Biotin (make sure if you decide to take it..you take with a B-complex vitamin).

I co wash 2-3 times a week...and DC once a week with Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose. Use Aphogee 2 min Recnstructor as needed..

I don't do a whole lot to my hair...I stretch my relaxers to 10 weeks...I moisturize and seal once daily..I have fine strands..so my hair gets weighed down easily...I keep my hair off my shoulders almost all of the time..I can't use hair bands..so I use magic hair pins (from Sally's or Ulta).

I have been experimenting with Ayurveda...that's about it!

Re: Is there any one that had short hair most of your life thinking it would not grow

**Raises Hand** Yes, most of my life, my hair was around NL. Growing up, it was like short, dry, damaged hair was expected on a head with my hair type (4b). After finding hairboards like this one, I learned to properly take care of my hair, and finally see some progress. Pics are in my avatar and siggy...more in my fotki.

Girl, hang in there! Everything you need to know to grow your hair to lengths that were thought impossible, you'll find it here. I'm not natural, but texlaxed (intentionally underprocessed), but hopefully, some knowledgeable transitioners and naturals will chime in soon.

Welcome and Happy Hair Growing!

Re: Is there any one that had short hair most of your life thinking it would not grow

Check out Ediese, she talks about that all the time. There is a thread on this around here somewhere with proof pics, I'll see if I can dig it up.

I know I was SL my whole life even though my hair grew really fast. I just thought it stopped growing when it hit my shoulders. It didn't, it just started breaking off there! I'm not much further than that right now, but even the fact that I am past SL lets me know I can grow my hair as long as I want.

Oh, and my 13 y/o sister has really coarse 4b hair. My aunt pressured my mom into relaxing it when she was about 6 or 7 and it broke off something bad. Some parts were literally bald or |--------------| this long. None of it was past ear/neck length ever. I started taking care of hers shortly after I joined LHCF and she is either APL or almost there now (don't know the exact length, I keep her hair braided/twisted up). I think I am more excited about her progress than my own just because of all the negative things people always told her about her hair.

Re: Is there any one that had short hair most of your life thinking it would not grow

well my hair has been shoulder length for a long time and it never grew past my shoulders, right now I'm apl and probably will be full apl by aug or sept.......I never thought my hair would get this long, I have to show pics later, but I did use growth aids and vitamins, and bunning helped retain length, but I don't like to bun alot because it bothers my nape, and actually my nape is breaking off so i might just do the sylver2 regimen and wear my hair down, I used OCT mixed with MT, Beemine, MN, gro-aut oil, rosemary and that's it, I had tons of new growth and my homegirl is like "dang girl ur hair is getting longer," and I don't know what to say cuz I want it longer, feel like since I'm a plus size diva, apl isn't nothing to me.......but that's it, right now I'm off the growth aids and taking a break, I'll probably try boundless tresses and OCT again over the summer or until the fall.....i'll get pics soon.

Re: Is there any one that had short hair most of your life thinking it would not grow

My 4a hair has been a couple inches (2,3 at the most) past SL all my life. I am grazing MBL after just one year of LHCF...

Re: Is there any one that had short hair most of your life thinking it would not grow

My hair has pretty much been chin length all of my adult life. I have finally nailed down a routine that works for me.

I have heard all of the usual things:

Your hair is too hard, rough, nappy, etc. I have even had hair dressers refuse to do my hair when I was natural and if they do decide to do my hair, I always get the comments.

I will be posting my one year update in June that will show my chin length hair at the beginning of my journey.

This thread is really good to see, very encouraging. I myself have a few doubts here and there from time to time, and when I do I usually go stalk someones fotki, LOL.

I have been either NL or SL all my life. And I can't even imagine my hair being past that, but I still won't give up.

Sometimes I feel so silly because it seems like the simplest things, make such a big difference, i.e, less heat, more heat protection, washing more frequently, moisturizing, more frequently, deep conditioning more frequently, and the list goes on.

Re: Is there any one that had short hair most of your life thinking it would not grow

I haven't had as much progress as some of the other ladies on this board, but my entire life (well, almost, i was APL for two weeks after braids....then it all broke off) i've been SL. I've been taking care of my hair for six months and now i'm at almost APL (see siggy). I had been told by a stylist that I "just didn't have the type of hair that grows long" WRONG !

Re: Is there any one that had short hair most of your life thinking it would not grow

Prospurr4, thanks for the kind words of hope. I am tryin so hard to keep the length I have without doing the bc. I so hate I put that s-curl in my hair now, but I'll get over it.

Re: Is there any one that had short hair most of your life thinking it would not grow

ladies I would like to thank all of you for your info. Sometimes I feel at 53, I should just let it be, but Noooo! I have the right to try to grow my hair long at any age. I wish I could fine more ladies my age on the forum that are trying to grow their hair and could give out some good tips. As you get older and your body change it will sometimes have a lot to do with slow growth. I hope some older ladies will read this and come on in and give me some input. Once again a big thank you too all.:yep::feedback:

Re: Is there any one that had short hair most of your life thinking it would not grow

Pre-LHCF the longest my hair ever grew was about 2 inches above APL. My cousins and my mom were all able to grow their hair down their back. I grew up with a bit of a complex about my hair because (a) other family members hair grew and mine didn't and (b) my mom was always on my case about the way my hair looked--not that she did anything to help. Even today, she laughs when I tell her I'm trying to grow my hair waist length.

Re: Is there any one that had short hair most of your life thinking it would not grow

You're welcome!

ETA: (I just read your post where you mention your age.) I will be 49 this month, so it's never too late to improve yourself, which includes your hair.

Re: Is there any one that had short hair most of your life thinking it would not grow

When I first found LHCF I was just above shoulder length. My hair was always between SL and APL, perhaps APL at its longest before LHCF. Now I'm on my way to WL. The tips here work BUT you need to be patient and consistent. Don't give up yet. You'll get to the length you want eventually. Your hair is growing. It really does help to set goals and to work towards them. Well it helped me. Take progress pics every 4 months or so. That kept me motivated as well. The TLC you give your hair does pay off. HHG!

I was just thinking about all the ladies that have had short hair most of their life thinking it would not grow long but now your hair is long. Could you tell me what you did to get your hair long and healthy.

I stopped using chemicals and heat. My hair is longer now than it has ever been in my ENTIRE life.
