is there a expiration date on shampoo/conditioner

like people sometimes say no to buy salon products from other places but a salon cause they can be old? do these products really have some sort of expiration date. i know something that is 5yrs old might not be as good as something that is a 6 months old post "production"

what about over the counter items such as optimum care, cream of nature and stuff like that?

i figure smell and possible texture might allude to an old product but i wanted to see what you guys thought

I would think so... If some things have been sitting on your shelf for too long then it might not work as well as a fresh new bottle

For instance.. Vitamins have expiration dates on them..but its basically for shelf life purposes...the store cant sell it but they can sell it to you for a cheaper rate since technically it did expire..

I have some Lustrasilk HPC that was discontinued in the early-mid 1990's. It still works the same. I keep it refridgerated just in case, though...

I know that when Profective Mega Growth gets old it smells like old oil. I mean literally it smells rank. You can tell that the product is old because it even has a different texture. Pre mixed relaxers that are old won't take very well, resulting in underprocessed hair trust me on that one. When I used optimum lye relaxer, the place where I bought it always pulled the older jars forward so that the new jars would be purchased last. This is called product rotation. Now in any beauty supply store I pick the products from the back of the shelf because they are usually the newer products.

I know from experience that:
Luster's Pink Oil gets old and you can tell by the color change it turns into a lime greenish color
Jam also gets old, and this too also changes color

Isoplus sheen spray gets old and the smell changes. I stop using it because to me it was greasy and it would take me awhile to finish it. I know I could of bought a smaller size but I like Luster's sheen spray better because it seems lighter.

I do this too, get the new products from the back of the shelf.
I bought some Nexxus Botanoil oil (not the shampoo) about a year ago from a salon. I didn't pay attention until I got home and when I opened it, I realized how old it was. The smell from the rancid oils was putrid!

I didn't see an expiration date but the packaging was Nexxus' old one. I'm much more careful now.

This is a good question. I've always wondered about hair care products expiring, especially since I have two one liter bottles of L'anza Protein Plus shampoo (old formula). I guess I better sniff it every once in a while.
