Now, I don't think that my mother is being negative on purpose or anything....well, here's the story.
My mother has been doing my hair for all of my life, and from the time I was 10, she has been pressing my hair. She does a VERY good job, and right now my hair is healthy and at bra-strap length. Well, I turn 20 this year, and I know that soon enough I will have to start doing my hair myself. I haven't really tried to press my hair because I am afraid that I will burn it somehow. I cant really handle my natural hair because it's too thick, so when I wash it, when it is dry, my mother has to braid it for me, because I get impatient fast, and I just braid it any old way. Now, don't get me wrong, I CAN do hair, it's just I can't handle it before it is pressed. Anyway, we were talking the other day, and my mom was saying that when people start to do their own hair themselves after someone has been doing it for so long, it starts to drop out, until their hair gets use to their hand and starts to grow back. Now, I DON'T want to go to a hairdresser when I get to this point, (by the way, I have NEVER been to a hairdresser), and after all of the stories that I have heard about them, I don't think I want to go. Besides there aren't a lot of hairdressers out there that can do an old fashion press. So my question is, even if you know a lot about hair (you know us), is it still possible that when you get to this point, your hair will drop out regardless for the fact that your hair isn't use to your hand doing it?

Thanks in advance!

Good gravy. This is right up there with "growing hands" and "pregnant women doing your hair makes it grow". As long as the person doing your hair knows what they're doing, your hair should be fine. But, you sound like you have absolutely beautiful hair and it's great that you've only had one person doing it your whole life. So, if you do decide to go to a stylist, please do your research. 1 wrong move by a stylist can really set you back.

No, your hair will not start to fall out or get thin until it "gets used to your hands."

Hands are hands, and your hair won't know the difference.

Natural hair can take some getting used to, but with a little practice, you will be able to style it yourself if you like.

With the right shampoo/conditioner/wide-tooth comb/ and patience, your hair can be managed by anyone, even you

I do not believe that is true, but if you are worried about styling your own hair then maybe you can have your mom show you how she presses it and pratice on small sections of your hair that aren't very noticeable until you get the hang of it

She prolly told you this because when people start doing their own hair, they usually have no idea how to take care of it, which leads to breakage and damaged hair. However, you do/will know how to take care of yours, so you have nothing to worry about.

i'm cosigning with nay and mizavalon. but be careful if you are going to start pressing your own hair. always test it on a paper towel or something if it burns the towell it will burn out your hair. if your hair turns gold its burnt. learned this from experience.

I agree.

I think you should continue letting your mom press your hair or the next time you get your hair pressed by her, you should have her show you how to do it and even let you practice in front of her to see if you're doing right.

When my mom used to use curling irons on my hair and I had to go off to college, I had her show me how to do it my senior year in high school and I learned how to curl my own hair with a curling iron just as good as my mom would. But now I don't even use curling irons anymore. So I think letting your mom teach you would be a good idea.

Well I dont think it's so much the 'hands' as is it the care you give. When my mom stopped doing my hair after i left for college it was fine for the first year but after that it did thin out and I had to eventually cut it. BUT my issue was school was stressing me out and my hair was bra strap length so i really couldnt handle all the hair by myself. I am now more prepared and I know that when it gets back to bra strap I will be fine. I also agree with what someone said earlier that you should have her show you how to press it.
Also beware the SHS, I had one that not only cut my hair but didnt detangle and tore a lot of it out.
