Is Hair Typing really THAT hard?

How come some women can spot a weave, a fake purse, and eye contacts from a mile away but when it comes to typing their own hair they are clueless?

So they come online, post really nice pictures of their hair and ask "What hair type am I?"

No, better yet, they go to every hair board on the internet posting the same pictures...


Hmmm...I'm just saying. Is it a ploy?

I feel indifferent. I just say what hair type I think it is and keep it moving....

lol....idk...i think some women have a variety of different textures that dont exactly fit into the simple 4a or 3c categories. That i see often and is understandable. However, there are those who i tend to scratch my head at when its clearly obvious what hair type they are

I think some people do that in hopes that you'll tell them what they want to hear, if you know what I mean.

I didn't think it was that difficult, but everyone doesn't think the same way so they honestly may not know.

I had asked the hair type question once on my fotki!! I really wanted to and was kind of confused. Once i got a couple answers i just deleted the photo anyways. I'm still not sure sure what number type it really is, so i don't go by it no more...this is when i had just found out about hair types and whatnot.

I think alot of ladies are really trying to find out...but then of course, ther are also the ones who just want people to gush about how nice their hair is.

If a person posts on one board gets responses and then posts the same pictures on another board asking the same question then that's extra. I haven't seen that happen though. I can understand coming back with pics that shows more NG or after a BC.

Most times I think the person genuinely wants to know what hair type they are.

Before I started reading about the history of black hair I didn't know what my hair type was because my hair has been relaxed from a very early age. Many are just discovering their natural texture and may not know what hair type their hair really is.

I think most really want to know and be sure that they are accurately stating their hair type. Some types are right in between and may may be interpreted differently by a variety of people. And then sometimes the charts themselves are confusing.

I still don't quite know the factor that crosses a person out of the 4B category and into the CNapp area.

I think people are really confused sometimes. When I started my hair journey I really had no clue about hair types. Granted, I never posted pics asking what hair type I was; i just read the descriptions and came to the conclusion that i have two hair types (well atleast I think I do, no one has ever confirmed). But if you have no clue about hair types and different people are telling you different things and you have multiple textures...i can see how that would be confusing and warrant multiple questions.

I think it is...I think the system is confusing. I don't think people are really looking for "attention" I just think they truly need clarification. I personally don't even like the whole hair typing thing because I have three different textures of hair on my head.

Its confusing because there are alot of factors that determine ones hair texture.

so to combat the inconsitency and multiple factors on ones hair texture, people added their own categories or made entirely new charts.

some that people dont agree on the aforemetioned additions and some arent aware they were made at all.

These things as well as other reasons i am forgetting can make it very confusing.

and like hairsothick said there are those few that want you to tell them what they want to hear. 100 people can say that person is a 4 something and they swear up and down its a 3 something. Even though they asked the advice and ive seen on other sites,where sometimes it can get down right ugly.

I was confused. I was told I was maybe 3c but now I know I am 4a; however, my hair just very fine.

In some ways it's a form of narcissism, but then, so is my Fotki :-D. I'm sure some women really want to know. For some it's a form of denial. I dunno. I sort of knew from looking at other heads what mine was, and you know what? It really doesn't matter.

I think people really want to know what they are. Heck, I really want to know what I am. Looking at my baby pictures, I look like a combination 2b 3b, which doesn't make ANY sense. I think, as others have said, it's not always so easy to decide.
If people care or are beginning to care about their hair, they're probably just as paranoid as every poster on this forum about screwing it up...or, almost as paranoid . Perhaps they're just attempting to acquire as much information as possible in order to better care for their hair.

...After doing long-term research on this whole "hair type" thing and talking with my hair follicles about whether it affects anything concerning growth, health, length retention....I have come to realize it doesn't matter....In my view the only place hair type has a job is when it comes to choosing certain products and when you're making your decision to go natural, otherwise its not useful....some people put pictures up because they're sincerely confused...others....well lets just say we have some 4c's who are in denial im a 4a/4b and i LOVE IT!

That's the one thing I'm confused about.

I remember a post saying that Cnapp hair reflected less light so it looks duller even when moisturized and some other qualities. I guess it's like being beyond 4b if that's possible.

Maybe I'm overly positive...but I feel that people want to know. The hair types are confusing and very limited...I know a lot of people that have different textures in different parts of their hair...so it can be hard to distinguish.

But if someone is trying to get compliments...why does that really matter?? I'm not trying to be mean but I don't read that much into things...but that's me.

This only feeds into the good hair versus bad hair thing.

I think the hair typing is really confusing Ive seen several charts on the net and a lot of them differ from one another. I dont care about hair typing because it confuses so my best bet was to find hair twins and see how they classify themselves and still anybody can be wrong.

IMHO noticing kanekalon hair is much more easier because im use to seeing it. Plus the density added to hair type charts IS confusing.

Im really not trying to hijack this thread but if someone wants to post pic to get compliments why care? I think that threads like this one, can make newbies hesitate to post pics and get help especially if they are starting their natural journey and trying to understand their hair.

Do you sincerely believe that people are not direct on this board? if not, I might be crazy but most folks here are straight to the point. I never put someone in doubt when they ask for advice wether theyre direct or not, who am i to judge? Just my point of view.

I didn't think typing was that hard until we had the discussions on this board. I got all confused after the debates. So I can see how people would really want to know what the consensus is for their type.

Confession: I've always been pretty sure that I'm a solid 4b but thought of posting a topic "what is my hair type?" as a joke with all sorts of witty questions in it. Never did that though, lol.

eta: i chat on the cnapp forum. by the definition of the people who started the group, cnapp hair is essentially type 4 hair that doesn't clump. they also call themselves 4b, so not really beyond 4b, but just another way to say it according to them. the "c" is for "cotton" or "cloud", since it doesn't look like clumpy curls, it looks like undefined cotton.

It's hard for me to type my own hair because I haven't seen my hair in it's natural state since I was like 11 or 12. So, if I transitioned, I would probably need some help typing my hair, but my guess is that I'm 4-ish. However, my mom said my curls were well defined, and nothing like my sister whose hair has been natural as an adult and was clearly 4B.

IDK, but yeah, I would probably ask people on here & on K.I.S.S., too.

They're direct when they want to be, IMO. No one wants to be considered conceited. Everyone wants to be modest first.

But during my time on here i've seen a lot of folks who start threads like "am i waistlength yet" "am i pretty", "do i need plastic surgery", "should i shave off my hair", etc....when they look like a model with Halle Berry skin and their hair looks flawless....I'm just wondering what all that was about...and i know i'm not the only one.

So yes, i get a little confused with the hair typing also but when folks start a thread asking if they are a 4z and they are clearly damn near 1a then it makes you wonder.

It takes all kind of persons ( low self esteems, perfectionistas,normal, crazy,etc) to make a world.

LMAO!! Hey I'm one of those people who asked and posted photo (only one), because this is really all new to me... Once I was told that a photo of "New Growth" was needed to tell I was like ooooooooooooooh okay.... But since then I have come across folks like Traycee (waving hey there) and now I know I'm a 4B... And I'm okay with that...

I think I'm a 4b (headed toward 4zzzz) but I don't know the point of knowing my hair type. I still have to find the products that work for ME; I can't use the same stuff that another 4a/b relaxed does necessarily, I still have to do my own experimentation, I have to find my own flatiron temp, my own moisturizer.... what good does it do to know hair type anyway?

I ain't gon' lie I am one of those confused people., I know I'm 4 something but erplexed. MY hair is crazy thick, but has some wave in the newgrowth. I never asked 'cause I just didn't want to seem dense .
I have learned how to really love my hair on here regardless of its "type".

But to answer the question Hair typing to me is kinda hard .
