My friend's daughter doesn't realize that children should be seen and not heard. She thinks she can just say whatever comes to her mind to grown folks.

Anyway, I never press my hair bone straight because I'm just not trying to necessarily have that look. So whenever I see this child (she's 12), at some point she inevitably will comment about my "big" hair, or "bushy" hair, or "all that hair," but the way she says it, you know it's not a compliment.

This child has obviously seen too many bone straight weaves on folks' heads in videos, and she seems to believe if it ain't super straight, it ain't right.

Oh, by the way. Her hair is about the same grade as mine, a little beyond neck length, and dry and unhealthy. But she wants to comment!!

I've heard some people say that you'll only have long hair if your mother has long hair - another variation of the "it's just because of genetics" comment.

I don't know if this is an insult or not, but this happened in middle Georgia last weekend. I'm freshly relaxed, so I can't imagine what people would say if I was transitioning or had some new growth.

Anyway, my boyfriend and I visited his grandmother on Saturday. I had all of my hair down. Then the next day we went back, and I was wearing a ponytail. He said that his grandmother is bold, and I guess she is. She said that my hair didn't look that long yesterday and asked me if I had added some pieces this morning. I was like, "No, ma'am."

WCG started laughing and said, "I told you that's what they were talking about last time you were down here."

Grandmother says, "It wasn't me. When you two left your godmother's house the last time she called over here and asked if that was her hair."

Anyway, my bf use to say that I need to go to a salon to get my hair done. I told him that those people could take my hair out. He said that that happened to his mother, so I guess he can understand that. He also thinks that my mom doesn't know how to do hair. I said that she does and asked him why he thinks that my sisters and I all have long, healthy hair. He said that it's genetic. He has an answer for everything, I guess.

SeatownSista, that guy crossed the line, but I do remember a few years ago when ladies in my homewtown started going natural people would say that they're lesbians. I guess they probably weren't lesbians. Some people are just ignorant and don't understand what we ladies on this board do. Heck, I didn't even understand everything about hair until I came to this board.

That's the only time I've gotten a comment like that but I can only imagine what people are thinking when they see my natural hair. When I wear it in twist outs I get a lot of compliments but when I were it just picked out in a fro I don't get any compliments or I'll receive funny looks from other black people.
