Re: Insults, Insults !!! Get Your Fresh Insults He

My mom doesn't like it when I wear my hair in a semi-curly afro [I only wear it this way around the house though and she doesn't like it sometimes]. About 3 years ago...I wore braids [kind of like braided plaits]. I met this guy and he said they looked like "Medusa"...then later he made up a "lie" about my hairstyle saying I had it "gel" in it and "slicked it to the side"....
mad.gif
Liar...I DON'T WEAR ANY KIND OF GEL IN MY HAIR NOR WAS IT SLICKED TO THE SIDE-MY HAIR WAS CURLED THAT DAY...I mean how is someone going to "up" and tell you what you wear in your hair and how you styled it...

This is how type 3s must feel when other board members say that type 3s have it easier because their curl pattern is looser.

[/ QUOTE ]

Actually - I don't mind it as much on the board because *usually* people are speaking from an informed reality... The tighter the curl, the dryer the hair, and to extent that informs the attention to detail necessary to grow thhe hair to extraordinary lengths.

Occasionally someone on the board says something about non-4 hair types vis-avis hair growth that makes the hairs on my neck stand up, but usually no. There are realities about hairtypes that make the care slightly different. Realities that mean that I may still retain length while say, coloring my hair 50 times
smirk.gif
, where for some people, that might be the end of their hair growth endeavors.
frown.gif
I get that.

But I've known dark skinned, medium skinned, and light skinned women with hair that ranges from 1-4 - so skin certainly has nothing to do with it. And neither does "my mix". I have 3c hair - same as many fully AA women - and that determines my haircare possibilities to an extent - but it's not THE determining factor.

It's people who think being "light" or "mixed" means having long hair automatically - with no effort - that make me angry.

In fact, there are type THREE's that have said this to me, on some: "Girl you know how our hair is, we don't really eve have to try..." Meanwhhile, back at the ranch, I'm preshampooing, ACVing, and deep conditioning within an inch of my life - and I know for a fact my hair didn't grow a hot inch until I began all the extra work.
ohwell.gif

People are so rude. I guess that they never think before they speak
frown.gif

My family is the same way. Everytime I see them from out of town they think that just because I am from L.A. that my hair should be looking the bomb when they see me, ie blowouts EVERYDAY!

Two of my co-workers (both are AA, one has healthy thick permed hair which is a lil past shoulders and the other has barely shoulder length thin permed hair) have issues with hair! They are addicted to the 'creamy crack' for real-I mean, touch ups every 4 weeks! When I have take out my braids and let my hair breathe for a week-I usually flat iron and put my hair in a ponytail. They both make a face and sarcastically say, "When are you going to get a perm?" I told them of my plans of perming my hair right before the wedding in 2005 and they shut up. I wonder-what if I decided to go natural? They would never have nothing nice to say about my hair.

Re: Insults, Insults !!! Get Your Fresh Insults He

This whole thread has me cracking up and shaking my head at the same time. Modelchick, I can relate to the grandmother thing. Your's sounds exactly like mine. And youre right, they are a product of their time and that's why I excuse a lot of it. My grandmother was outside the other day, saying that my hair was getting so long and it makes me look more hispanic and get this, "refined". I get so disgusted sometimes with her that I want to say something, but I know that it is HER way of complimenting me. I told her that many of the refined women I knew of, didnt have any hispanic features or long hair. And anyway being refined is not a look it's how you carry yourself, what's in your heart and mind.

Re: Insults, Insults !!! Get Your Fresh Insults He

a lot of people dont know any better about perming their hair every 4 weeks, it doesnt mean theyre "addicted to creamy crack". if you trust your stylist and they tell you you need a relaxer, more likely than not you would get a relaxer if you dont know any better and if your hair is doing well (you did say one had thick relaxed hair so obviously her addiction is doing her "some" good).

also, just because people have thin hair, doesnt mean its unhealthy, some people , like my mom, sister, and ex-roomie have naturally thin hair, its been thin and always seems like it will be thin. so thin is not an indication of health

Re: Insults, Insults !!! Get Your Fresh Insults He

Well the worst I have been called is a "Black Sambo" by a family member who has hairissues herself.

My mother is coming around but at first she did not like it. (my natural hair) When she would say something negative, I would say "But mom I am only working with what you gave me. So this is all YOUR fault!"

Re: Insults, Insults !!! Get Your Fresh Insults He

I was riding my bike down the street one day with my hair in a fro, minding my own business and this kid yelled out, "your hair's ugly!!" Since it was just a kid I ignored him, but it kind of ticked me off. I just wrote it off as ignorance, where I live he's probably never seen natural afro hair before.

Re: Insults, Insults !!! Get Your Fresh Insults He

OT: Betty Davis, R U from Guyana? I am, too.

My aunt and her daughter have long relaxed hair that used to be healthy but I'v noticed they been falling off lately. Anyway I've been kinda lazy lately shaking and going all the way. Everytime I go home, her daughter tells me I should go back to relaxing so that I can have more styling options.

And evertime she sees me in a two strand twist she asks me if I'm locing.

Then they all agree That my natural hair is a phase and that I'll get over it. That one comment really burns. A Phase??

Re: Insults, Insults !!! Get Your Fresh Insults He

Oh my goodness I can go on and on and on.......
I wore a afro pony to work..if looks could kill
I wore braids to work...girl what is wrong with you
I wore my hair in a tight tight braid out...girl are you okay lately you got this back to Africa look going on.

Do you know (keep in mind I am in the south)this older women pulled me to the side and said "girl you know these white boys in here really like you because of how you dress and look but if you keep coming in here with this Afro centric look they may not like you anymore". I was gone...SHE IS OFFICIALLY THE MOST IGNORANT WOMAN ALIVE.

What I am trying to imply is that the one w/the thin hair acts like her stuff don't stink...and she always has something negative to say-I'm trying to take care of my hair and just because I keep it in a certain way, she finds a way to try and insult me on the low.

Re: Insults, Insults !!! Get Your Fresh Insults He

I had a job at Krispy Kreme last summer and I wore my hair in a afro puff that stuck out of the little hole in the back of the hat I had to wear. One of my coworkers, a black male, asked "What's up with your hair? I mean, are you a dyke or something?"

I was so shocked and insulted I didn't know what to say! After getting over the shock of what he said I think I just told him that my hair is natural and that does not make me a "dyke". We were working in the drive thru together and customers were coming so I didn't really have the time to react the way I wanted to.

Re: Insults, Insults !!! Get Your Fresh Insults He

ATLien!!! I'm feeling you girl! At least you live in NORTH georgia...I live in South Georgia and its even worse..People can be soooo ignorant!!

Re: Insults, Insults !!! Get Your Fresh Insults He

I don't know if this is an insult or not, but this happened in middle Georgia last weekend. I'm freshly relaxed, so I can't imagine what people would say if I was transitioning or had some new growth.

Anyway, my boyfriend and I visited his grandmother on Saturday. I had all of my hair down. Then the next day we went back, and I was wearing a ponytail. He said that his grandmother is bold, and I guess she is. She said that my hair didn't look that long yesterday and asked me if I had added some pieces this morning. I was like, "No, ma'am."

WCG started laughing and said, "I told you that's what they were talking about last time you were down here."

Grandmother says, "It wasn't me. When you two left your godmother's house the last time she called over here and asked if that was her hair."

Anyway, my bf use to say that I need to go to a salon to get my hair done. I told him that those people could take my hair out. He said that that happened to his mother, so I guess he can understand that. He also thinks that my mom doesn't know how to do hair. I said that she does and asked him why he thinks that my sisters and I all have long, healthy hair. He said that it's genetic. He has an answer for everything, I guess.

SeatownSista, that guy crossed the line, but I do remember a few years ago when ladies in my homewtown started going natural people would say that they're lesbians. I guess they probably weren't lesbians. Some people are just ignorant and don't understand what we ladies on this board do. Heck, I didn't even understand everything about hair until I came to this board.

That's just an excuse for them to not take responsibility for treating their own hair better. But then when you try to explain to people that they can do better and instead of just blaming it on genetics, you get called "militant" and "obsessed".

Re: Insults, Insults !!! Get Your Fresh Insults He

Don't kill me you'll, but some people honestly believe that stuff.
shocked.gif
. I remember when I was in high school and didnt know how to care for my hair, I had a relaxer cause I always thought of my hair as "bad" hair. It was like nape length, and there were several girls who's hair were way shorter than mine, (like 3-4 inches long) and they were considered to have "good hair" (2c-3b). I was ALWAYS puzzeled because I sincerely thought that that hair type automatically meant long flowing lengths.
ohwell.gif
, and I always wonder why they didn't have it. Anyway, thank God I am educated now and thank God for the diversity on LHCF
love.gif
. I don't think that way anymore and I also love my 4a/b hair
grin.gif
because I now realize that it's all good....................

Re: Insults, Insults !!! Get Your Fresh Insults He

OK, I had to add this. A while back I took some elementry french classes and their was this beautiful girl with gorgeous natural hair in my class. She looked to be about a 4a, and had between 5&7 inches of natural hair. Anyway, her hair was always on point and she usually wore a neat fro. So on day she steps in class sporting a full wig and everyone including the professor was like, what the mess?....... So she tells us that she has a report to do and that she was gonna be on camera (she was a journalism major), so she was advised to "DO" her hair because her style was not asthetically appealing or appropriate
ohwell.gif
She wasn't to happy about it, but she realized that she had to suck it up and conform if she wanted to fit in.
frown.gif
. I remember Corporate protocall being discussed on the forum recently, but it is still sad when we see situations like this. That young lady and her fro were the epitome of class.....but hey

Re: Insults, Insults !!! Get Your Fresh Insults He

My mom actually likes my hair in the wash and go type styles but I only wear those around the house. If its curlyish, pulled back, or flat ironed shes happy. She's real good at giving backhanded compliments, tho.(She once told my cousin who is a BBW, "to be so big you sure do find some nice clothes to fit you"
ohwell.gif
) or saying something negative 2 mins before you go out the door and dont have time to change even if you wanted to. A couple of months ago, 3 days into a roller set I should have used more product for, the humidity hit. It wasnt looking as silky and bouncy as it was at first, but my hair was passable, just not the way it normally looks. She says, 2 mins before we are going somewhere I didn't want to go anyway, "Why don't you fix your hair differently? You never comb your hair nice when you are going somewhere with me."
mad.gif
I would never actually strike my mother but I know the Lord was with me that day cuz it had to have taken all the angels in heaven to hold my hand back from following through on the thoughts that entered my mind. What she said wasnt so bad but that was just the last straw on an already bad day...family...cant live with them...cant kill 'em.

I flew home for July 4th weekend with a fresh rollerset. Everyone was surprised at how much length I'd gained since Xmas. Each day I played tennis with my dad and my two brothers. Once, while we were figuring out whose racket I'd borrow, my dad said "You ready to go sweat out your little hair?"

Wow I've never heard the redskinned having long hair. Someone made a slight comment to me like that but I didn't get it.
