Now i usually try to wait at least 10 -12 weeks to do my touchup, but since the fiasco i had the last time i had to move it up to 8 weeks this one time. Anyway i'm in the restroom at my job this past Sunday and i take down my hair outta my scrunchie to detangle it because when it's in a ponytail my hair just tangles up like that sometimes. Anywhoo one of my co-workers that i'm cool with just comes out the back with, "well at least your hair isnt short so you dont have to worry about it looking too bad when you are close to your perm."

so i tell her that i touch up my own hair and that i try to wait every 12 weeks to do my touch up. This is when she says," what's wrong can your husband not afford for you to go to the hair shop to keep your hair up?"

-- Now y'all know i saw jesus right about then -- so i keep my cool and say, " i havent been to the hair shop in almost 4 years since the last stylist butchered my hair. I take care of my hair myself because i dont trust anyone else in my hair." Why WHY WHY do people say this kind of stupid shyt???? Anyone else run headfirst into to wall of insulting ignorance lately?? TIA -- jainygirl

My mother and I were watching Lauryn Hill's "That Thing" video on VH1 Soul and my mom says how is her hair now & I said she has an afro now, she cut off her dreads. Well in the video it has a split screen of her with a straight wig on and with her own dreads. So, my mom says she looks good with her hair both ways straight and with dreads

Then she says, I think she looks so good with the dreads because she's darkskinned...WTF!!!

Well, my grandmother of course thinks her grandkids are the most beautiful things--but she hates how I wear my hair in the big-*** rollersets and whenever I wear my hair out around her, she always makes the comment "You can get away with that hairstyle because you're a pretty girl..." That bothers the hell outta me! Almost like she's saying "Your hair looks like ish, but your face makes up for it.." She's lucky she's my grandma...haha

My last great hair insult came from that demonseed hair dresser that messed up my texturizer. When I asked her why she was working the fudge out of the perm she says, "Oh I thought you wanted to be able to comb your hair".

I thought I was going to knock her upside her stupid arse head.

Well, my dad called the other day and said...."Do you want/like that African look or do you just not have the money to get your hair done"!!! I was floored!! WHY would I cut off hair that was a couple of inches from my bra strap if I didn't WANT the look!! People just kill me!!...

Now that I no longer relax and I stretch them out....one of my coworkers says all the time...."When are you going to get a good perm" I look at her ever so thin hair...and say..."I am not...I don;t like to be able to see thru my hair" She was like I wish my hair was thicker...I replied it would be if you stopped relaxing it so bone straight nad so often.

My grandmother is a product of her time--and back then blacks were treated bad and before the 70's most did whatever they could to straighten their hair. My grandmother is pretty colorstruck AND confused, IMO, because she looks white, so she wasn't treated well by blacks either. Anyway, she says the CRAZIEST things, but I try to overlook them because I realize what she's gone through...and she doesn't "get it" when I try to explain that she can't say certain things.

For example--I use to wear the flat twists in the front with a rollerset in back--and oneday when I changed the style, she told me "I'm glad you stopped wearing your hair like that--it makes you look like a little ni**a girl." I was FLOORED....

Any "It's just long because..." comments. I get it all.

It's just log because you have "good hair".It's just long because you're mixed. It's just long because you don't liketo comb it. You're redskinned - you're supposed to have long hair.

I work very hard on my hair, so I get very pissed when people suggest my hair is due to anything but hard work.

My cousin recently informed me that I have to have long hair because if I didn't I'd look crazy. Basically you look like my ass, so you can't wear short hair.

Gotta love people....

This is how type 3s must feel when other board members say that type 3s have it easier because their curl pattern is looser.

I flew home for July 4th weekend with a fresh rollerset. Everyone was surprised at how much length I'd gained since Xmas. Each day I played tennis with my dad and my two brothers. Once, while we were figuring out whose racket I'd borrow, my dad said "You ready to go sweat out your little hair?"

He knew the straight style would get curly if I got it wet.

I was at the bar with my boyfriend and his best friend, and the subject of me planning to cut my relaxed hair off in the future came up. My boyfriend does not want me to do it, and his friend agreed. Basically their reasoning was that women just don't look good with short hair and it's better to have long hair than short hair. How about that for sweeping generalizations?

I was reading a salon.com article by a woman who worked as a stripper in grad school during her outlandish dissertation research about gender roles in society. The short haired strippers HAD to wear long wigs if they wanted to get attention and tips.

My mom is the queen of the insults. She does not support my transition AT ALL. "What are you going to do, run around with a curly bush on your hair?!" She thinks that I need something in my hair for it to look "right."

Other people's opinions vary. I get a

from some men who know about my transition but my ex said that he liked me better with straight hair.

My roommate, who has curly hair, has said that curly hair isn't sexy. That one left me thinking WTF?
