Good question. I've wondered about that myself...so bumping /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I learned about ingredients through ingredients dictionary like this one:
http://www.cosmeticcop.com/learn/dictionary.asp?TYPE=MAIN

There are others, just do a yahoo search for cosmetic ingredients dictionary or similar search.

I learned that there are softeners, sealers, moisturizers, etc; I learned for my hair I need ALL OF THE ABOVE. LOL!!!

It honestly depends on what I want the product to do..

If I want moisture…I look for water, glycerin, propylene glycol
cetearyl alcohol (all humectants) as the first few ingredients.

If I want protein..i look for proteins..like hydrolyzed wheat protein, amino acids, silk protein, keratin, etc..

I typically stay away from petroleum, and mineral oil ESPECIALLY on the scalp. If its just going on my hair and I like the product..i will make an exception if it has mineral oil or petroleum in it.

I also stay away from MOST alcohols unless I know it’s a “good alcohol” and I stay away from a lot of cones.. like amodimethicone (which doesn’t work as well in my hair)

For oils I look for jojoba, castor, coconut oil, etc…
