i think it depends on the head and the hair. that's why some people love certain products, and some will hate the same products. here are some general guidelines though:

<ul type="square"> [*]silicones: because it coats the hair, if too much is used, it can interfere with moisturizing. some people complain that they have a difficult time washing them off. i've never had this problem. my hair loves -cones. [*]mineral oil and petrolatum: supposed to be bad for the scalp because they can clog the pores and inhibit growth. i personally think they're fine for the hair though. [*]Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES): both are detergents commonly used in shampoos. SLS is the harsher of the two. if you can, avoid them, but if you can't, just make sure to use extra moisture. i have to use a prescription shampoo for my scalp, and of course it contains SLS. i mix it with my regular shampoo to avoid it being too drying. [/list] those are the ones off the top of my head. if i think of more, i'll post them...

Mineral oil/petrolatum and SLS/SLES/sulfates are the only things which I avoid- my natural hair just doesn't respond well to them. When I was relaxed I had no issues with any of the ingredients though.
