I just read that Vitamin Shoppe sells Coconut oil softgels. Do you guys think this will be as effective? As if I don't take enough supplements.

For the amount of oil you actually get in the softgels you're better off just buying the oil in the jar.

That's kinda what I figured :ohwell:. Thanks for the advice. I just got back from the Vit shoppe w/a 29 oz jar!!

I bought two jars from Whole Foods Market the other day. One specifically for hair and skin, which is to ONLY stay in my bathroom(Spectrum brand), and then one specifically for cooking which will remain in my kitchen(Jarrow Formulas brand). They're both organic, and unrefined. This is said to be the best kind since it's retains more nutrients. I used it as a pre-poo monday, and I had oil dripping everywhere as i was putting on the plastic cap to let it "marinate". When I took that cap off later, there was hardly any dripping! The oil had soaked into my hair almost completely!!! I'm in love with coconut oil and will never go without it!

I'm frying some organic(free-range) chicken breast tonight with vegetables and soy sauce. Mmmmmm!

I just read that cooking with coconut oil actually makes you skinnier (March Marie Claire)...

yeah i read that too in a book! it's said to be a "weight loss miracle", by just merely cooking with it.

I fry in coconut oil... I fry Trader Joe's butterflied lightly breaded shrimp and it is goood :lick:

Ok I went ahead and got in on the buy 2 get 3 free from PP. Never used coconut oil before in my diet so even if it doesn't work well for me that way, I know my hair loves it so it'll be used one way or another.

ETA it's extra virgin coconut oil

I orded from PP as well...I have been consuming 1 tablespoon..not as consistent as I should..I am taking Cod Liver Oil as well which I am wondering if that is doing too much..

I finally bought some more today. I ate up my last jar several months ago and it was so delicious in my food! I buy the NOW brand of virgin, unrefined or the Spectrum brand of virgin, unrefined coconut oil.

Thanks for starting this thread Plenty706! I read another in the Health board (started by Vevster, I believe) about coconut oil and there really is something special about it.

I'm especially interested in the health and hair benefits from eating it more than applying it to my hair.
Here is a quote I found about eating coconut oil and hair growth:

[COLOR=#ff0000Each day I consume about one tablespoon of coconut oil because I've noticed it improves my energy levels. Tropical Traditions Virgin Coconut Oil is the only coconut oil I use and recommend because it's the freshest, best tasting coconut oil I've found. I've compared it to others and it won my vote. I recommend it for cooking because it is much more stable than other vegetable oils; when it's heated it won't create toxic trans fatty acids. This is the oil I use to cook everything from eggs to veggie stir fries. Bottom line--my food always tastes great. Just ask my husband. Best of all, I've been getting a great big bonus: my hair is growing faster and is stronger and thicker than it's been in years! Be wary of Coconut Oils that say "Extra Virgin" it is just a marketing term and doesn't mean anything...

I've been lurking on another board and a large number of ladies with 3 and 4 ft of hair swear by cooamut oil on their hair:eek: Now that LHCF has spoken I'll find some that I can eat and put on my hair:lachen:

me 2!!! I've been on the net all day looking it up!!

I have been using the NOW brand of coconut oil for over a year. It is by far my favorite type of oil. I use it in my hair and to moisturize my skin. It is nice and light and give great sheen to my hair without weighing it down. And I use it daily on my skin...no more lotion for me. A little bit goes a long way......

Is it the coconut oil specifically that is good for you..... or coconut in general? My BF is from Trinidad and his mom does quite a bit of cooking with coconut milk..... i wonder if this is good as well?

You guys have sold me on the coconut oil! I just ordered mine off Puritan's Pride! I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I'm getting excited:grin: !
