I know that a lot of us do not want to lose what we worked so damn hard to achieve! However, sometimes you just have to cut/trim your hair to rid yourself of the damage.

I have seen so many peoples damaged heads, do a complete transformation into a healthy head of hair because they allow a nice trim or start fresh with a cut. (not a shave your head bald cut)

I mean just the thickness and fullness alone from a trim speaks volumes. Especially if you intend to hide your hair, I always assumed that you were supposed to hide your ends from being damaged/split if that is true! what is the point of hiding a bunch of already damaged ends that are already split

I am not referring to those of us that trim, and do not need a trim for another couple of months because they have been caring for and hiding their ends!!! hell thats why you don't need a cut in the first place...you already trimmed and maintained!!!

I am not saying get scissor happy at all. What I am saying though is that sometimes there ain't enough moisture/protein/MTG/monistat/herbal oils/special rinses/coconut milk to save a sisters head.

Sometimes my ladies, you just need a trim

I FEEL THE SAME WAY ABOUT MY HAIR. BACK IN OCTOBER WHEN I DECIDED TO CUT MINE TO EARLENGTH I HAD TRIED EVERYTHING TO RESTORE IT, BUT IN THE END ALL IT NEEDED WAS A GOOD CUT. SOMETIMES YOU JUST HAVE TO START OVER, BECAUSE ONCE YOU KNOW ITS DAMAGED THE LONGER YOU WAIT THE MORE DAMAGED THE HAIR BECOMES. I'M JUST NEVER HESISTANT ABOUT LETTING BAD ENDS GO, TO ME ONCE THEY NEED TO GO, THEN THEY NEED TO GO.

looking at that beautiful mane of yours is proof! Look at all the hair your gained since cutting. VERY PRETTY!

And both of you have gorgeous hair-that is nicely trimmed!

I agree with the original post. I think that we can become extreme in either direction--too many or not enough trims to take care of the hair.

I agree also. Getting a trim was the only thing that helped reduce my breakage/shedding so I know now that when it happens again, I just need to get a trim. And believe me when I say I tried everything before I resorted to trimming.

agree. yes it might suck to lose length but you are better o ff to have shorter healthy ends than long broken ends.

I had a trim months ago and my hair flourished.

I just had a setback now so next time i go to the salon Im going to get it trimmed.

Totally agree. I knew I needed a CUT for months before I did it. I kept trying to hold out because I didn't want to part with the length I had. In August I finally got the nerve and let DH cut my hair to right below my ears. It's growing back so much healthier now.

Touche...I went from shoulder to jaw/chin because my nape (and slightly above) was so damaged. Yeah I could have tried nursing it because the rest of my hair was healthy, but I really felt that the best thing to do was let it go and give my entire mane a fresh start. It hurt to do it though...:(

This is me in bold. I will cut my hair just to cut my hair. IDK it just something about cutting my hair that i get a kick out of. SO for me I'm trying to just cut my hair once a year. It's healthy but that won't stop me from cutting it. This is also the reason why it's so easy for me to go natural it gives me a reason to cut a lot off.:D

I think the effects of a freshly trimmed mane are always great! there is no way to go wrong with get a fresh trim to remove damage. Now trying to hold on to damaged ends and trying every potion in the book...that may cause further damage.

I can honestly say I have never looked at anyones hair that was in desperate need of a trim and thought " oh how long" or "how beautiful" I'd take health over length anyday!!!

Agreed! This is the situation I am in now but not due to damage, just for aesthetics.

I remember a time when getting my hair cut/trim made me feel good. Now, not so much, since going natural. But going to the stylist in general is very unpleasant now. :(

I want a shape up/hair cut so bad, but I fear they "won't do it correctly". I want it to look right straight and kinky!

Whew, I think this thread was the wake up call I needed. I trimmed a while back Feb. 4th (the beginning of my hair journey) but it was a punk trim:look: :lachen: First of all, I trimmed wet so I couldn't even see what I was trimming off. Then when I dried my hair I looked at my ends and realized that there were still tons of damaged ends and splits. My hair was more damaged than I thought! But I didn't want to cut more..scared:ohwell: ...but damage ends just suck the life out of me. Really. I moisturize and moisturize these ends but they still look like straw. It kind of makes you feel like you aren't progressing, like all of your work is in vain when you really just need to let them go: they can't be saved--the damage is too much! I'm going to cut this week:) and start taking better care of my ends!

And watch how much your hair will thrive!!! you always can depend on your hair growing back hella fast after a trim and you can count on it looking a 100 times healthier!

Todah (Thanks) sis,

I just did some chopping late 10:00 pm.night yesterday. My hair, at least the longest layer, was inching towards waist length. I wanted my hair even again (I ended up in layers when a couple of years ago I was cutting of some dry ends) I was doing the same thing this time, except I cut it up even more to get my hair even again. It is now in a cute slight assymetical bob in natural state. A style in a bob cut works great on me. I eventually cut off about a years growth in some areas, mainly the back.

Now my braided ponytail is MUCH thicker instead of tapering out into a rat tail. This is one reason why I do not like layers, the appearance is less thick. But with all the hairs one length my hair is a whole lot thicker, my hair supplements and moisture will help out as well as maybe a couple of more trims per year instead of just one trim. So I will try 3 trims a year.

Huge ditto.
I see too many examples of long hair that's thin or stringy and it's just icky. IMO shorter hair that's cut evenly and subsequently has bounce and movement is much more enviable than longer hair that's stringy. If your hair is long but the last few inches only have 6 strands that's not cute. If your hair is long but the left side is an inch shorter than the right side then it's time for a trim.

I speak as someone who just had an 1" chopped off :( My SO drew to my attention that my thin stringy ends were really not cute and recommended I either get a trim or wrap it up.

So true! I've been wearing my hair either in weaves or cornrows for the past five or six months and decided to put two strand twists in yesterday. My ends were screaming to be cut. I trimmed off about 1/4 to 1/2 inch. Looks much better!

Ditto. Today, I had to get my hair trimmed b/c my ends were not looking pretty at all. Now, the problem is not getting my ends trimmed. I was the one who asked for it. It's just that the dominican hairstylists I frequent can get scissor happy. Not a pleasant experience. My scalp is burned in many places; she tried to jack up the price on me...etc. At the end of the day, it was time to let these split ends go...You're completely right. Feels like a new start for me. I'm looking forward to nursing my hair back to health :)

  I like that your SO, pays attention to the health of your hair.

You are right. After my hair was severely overprocessed, there was nothing I could do. My Mom's eyes just looked sad every time she saw me, and she would suggest different cuts and show me pictures. After about 2 months of decent care, I got my shoulder length hair cut to neck. The cut wasn't that great, but 5 months later, I'm back to shoulder length, my ends are even, full and healthy still, so there really is no need to be scared, it will grow back:)

ETA: I have not needed a trim since my cut, I've been to 2 different stylist and neither suggested a trim.

I'm coming to this realization now. One side on my hair and the entire front, is so frizzy on the ends. No matter what I do to it, it just looks frizzy. The back is growing nicely and the ends look nice and smooth but that front looks bad, in my opinion. I have been doing the no heat, washing and deep conditioning twice per week, moisturizing the ends, etc to no avail. Maybe it's time to just cut the front. Maybe the ends are just too damaged to save. Any suggestions?

I so needed to read this today!!! I just got my hair professionally cut after two years! Before she proceeded to cut any hair she showed me my ends and they were VERY frazzled and split with knots. I ended up getting layers because my hair had NO shape to it all. After she was finished I ended up getting 3 inches cut off. I was a little disappointed, but my hair falls and feels soooo much better now.

Wow. We must be twins. This is exactly why I cut mine.

Bmack I love you for starting this thread!!!

Thanks Secretdiamond,

I think the biggest reason we try to hold on to the damage is because we do not want to lose length. I know some people still have been able to grow out their hair with damaged ends. However it still looks damaged and that is not pretty at all. Somtimes you just need a trim/cut to recover.

What some of us don't know is that your hair thrives when it is 100% healthy from root to tip. Its not 100% healthy with damaged ends:lol:

This thread is giving me a wakeup call.

It’s hard to tell when my hair is in its natural state, but lately I have noticed more breakage from splits…. L
So I know I am in dire need of a trim…. I hate to see my length go, and I have been dusting like crazy but when it comes down to it I will probably end up needing to cut a few inches off, I pray the stylist doesn’t get scissor happy but I really want a professional trim. I plan on getting one at the end of April-beg of May, in hopes that baggying till then and after a nice dusting I might be able to make up some of what I will lose at trim time. I just hate having wimpy see thro ends. And I know the main cause of my breakage is constantly wearing my hair out, but I cant help myself, I really need to give in to some protective styling for the sake of my ends…
